1. Sixty-Five Squares
[World Championship - Rapid Tiebreak, Move 41](Meridian Arena, London)Kai Osei had eleven minutes on his clock to save a position he already knew, without anyone needing to tell him, the rest of the chess world had buried.Nobody outside the glass could have told him anyway, even if they'd wanted to. That was the whole design of the booth. A soundproofed cube of reinforced glass set at the center of a darkened arena floor. Close enough to the crowd that Kai could pick out individual faces in the front rows whenever the lighting shifted. Sealed tightly enough that almost none of it reached him.It had started as an anti-cheating measure a decade ago. No chance of a signal from the crowd, no chance of a phone buzzing against the glass - and stayed because broadcasters had discovered what it did to an audience. Two men who could see nine thousand faces and hear almost none of them, running on nothing but what was happening in their own heads. The loudest thing inside the box was the lo
2. The Hand
*A debt is a promise made beneath the eye of the one who watches. And though the debtor forgets the word, and the years bury the name, and the kingdoms that witnessed it are made dust, the debt does not forget. For that which watches remembers, and in the appointed hour it comes to collect.*- Registry Primer, First Page[Transit - the Moment After](Meridian Arena, London)The floor was a long way down and getting longer, and what Kai noticed first about the body on it was that its collar was open.He hadn't worn it open. Naomi had done that. She had come over the barrier from the fourth row. He watched a steward take hold of her sleeve and lose it - and she had reached him before the medics did, still in their mother's wool coat, buttoned to the throat. She undid his top button first. It never helped. She knew it wouldn't help. She did it anyway. Her hand rose to her own collarbone, and then she seemed to understand that there was no one left who could see it. She put the same two f
3. Someone Else's Hands
[Day-1 (15:41)](Weaver's Lane, Sector 9, Alexandria)The first thing back was weight. All of it at once: a ribcage that took air like a bellows, a spine laid along wet stone, hands that had closed on an object before he knew he had hands. Warm water, tasting of rust, was soaking through the cloth across his shoulders. Overhead a split pipe vented steam into the alley with a long, leaking hiss. And a long way off, under everything, something was screaming without a break for breath. A sound with no words in it, and beneath that came a deep irregular crumping, like furniture being thrown down a stairwell by someone who owned a great deal of furniture.Kai laid still and took inventory, because an inventory was something he could do.Eyes: open. Sky: a strip of it between two buildings, white-grey, flat as an afternoon. Lungs: working, and nothing wrong with them. The ringing behind his left ear was gone. In the dark that had been a fact about not having a head. Now he had one, and it
4. Ninety Seconds
[Day-1 (15:56)](Chandler Court, Weaver's Lane, Sector 9, Alexandria)"Ninety seconds!"The shout came up the stairwell from the street door, flattened by four floors of brick, and a whistle followed it, one long brass shriek.Nobody on the stairs asked what it meant, which was how Kai knew what it meant. The people coming down - and there were a great many, moving with the speed of a thing that had been rehearsed and never once enjoyed. They were counting under their breath. A man a step above him muttered "ninety, ninety, ninety" like a charm, and shoved the lad in front of him on the third repetition.Kai was going the other way.It should not have been possible. The stair was a vertical throat with a gas jet turned low on every landing and steam pipes knocking in the walls, and it was full. But the crowd opened for him a half-second before he reached it. A shoulder dipped. A gap was there. He slid through each one without touching anyone, and understood that he was not the one doi
5. Six Tokens
[Day-1 (16:48)](The Collector's Rest, Market Row, Sector 9, Alexandria)The pot was still on the boil.Kai saw the steam first, a white column standing straight up into the amber light. Every other stall on Market Row had been left in a hurry. Canvas flapped on empty frames. A fish vendor's ice ran out of its crate in a bright line toward the gutter. At the corner of the crossing, one black cauldron the size of a bathtub sat on a brazier and cooked lentils. The walk had taken forty minutes, with a grille down on every third street. The Rest was a four-way crossing with a ring in the middle. The ring was black glass, ten paces across, where the cobbles had fused into a single sheet long before the Registry kept records. The stalls kept back from its edge at an even distance, as if a rope had been strung there. Oren touched the doorframe of a shuttered stall as he passed it. He did not look at the ring.People poured south past them with the hard silent walk Kai remembered from the sta
6. Three Lanes
[Day-1 (18:10)](Evacuation Checkpoint Alpha, the Outer Line arch, Sector 9, Alexandria)The blood on his left sleeve had dried to a crust, and nobody in the queue looked at it twice.Half the people around him wore someone else's. A woman ahead had a child's whole front stained to the knees. A docker held a rag to his scalp and told everyone who looked that it was nothing. Kai's sleeve was red, from the man whose leg he had held. The black on his trouser thigh was the Weeper's. He had stopped noticing which was which a street ago.The Outer Line stood across the end of the road like the ribs of something left out in the rain.It was a junction of steam pipes, the oldest in the Ward. Brass trunks as thick as barrels came in from the north and crossed overhead in a lattice, and all of it had gone green. Water beaded under every joint. A hum came out of it that Kai felt in his back teeth. On the far side the pipes were fatter, and a gauge as wide as a cartwheel hung there with its needl
7. One Sabre
[Day-1 (19:20)](Ring Road at Foundry Yard Lane, Sector 8, Alexandria)The Enforcer took one step, and the Weeper in front of him came apart at the waist. That was the whole of it. One step, one turn of the hips, and the sabre cut through the thing on the diagonal. The blade was lit along its length, the yellow of lamp oil, with fine lines glowing in the steel like the veins of a leaf. The air above it shook, as it does over a stove. The two halves dropped either side of his boots. He did not look down. He was already looking at the next one.Kai watched from twelve feet away, with an old man's elbow in his hand.He had not meant to be there. For half an hour after the arch he had been part of the stream, going south at the speed of the slowest feet and looking for straw-coloured hair. There was a great deal of straw-coloured hair in Alexandria. None of it was Oren's.Then an old man in a grey coat had gone down at the corner. Nobody stopped. The stream stepped over his cane and then
8. What It Hunts
[Day-1 (20:30)](The Foundry Yard, Sector 8, Alexandria)By half past eight the yard had one light and a pecking order. The light was Tobin. He sat on an upturned crucible against the north wall with his sleeves pulled down to the knuckles. The orange came through the cloth anyway, the way a lamp shows through a curtain. It reached ten feet and no further. Past that the slag was black.Kai had walked the edges while there was still a bit of daylight, and he kept the map in his head. A cold furnace shed ran along the north wall. A heap of iron bars lay by the east wall. Beside it a pipe as thick as a thigh came out of the ground and climbed the brick, hissing gently at a valve. A rusted lever stood next to the valve. In the middle of the yard lay a flat stone slab, four feet across, with an iron ring set in its face. When Kestrel stepped on it, it boomed like a drum."Old water tank," Wick had said. "Dry since the foundry shut. Goes down nine feet, maybe ten." "And that?" Kai had aske
9. One Move
[Day-1 (21:15)](The Foundry Yard, Sector 8, Alexandria)Kai gave the plan in four lines. Each one was short enough for a frightened man to remember."One. Tobin sits out in the open and lets his glow die down. The Hunter waits for glows to tire. When it thinks he is nearly finished, it comes in."Two. Once it is through the gate, Tobin stands up and lights. It walks straight at him. The slab is in its way."Three. The slab breaks, and the Hunter falls into the cistern."Four. I pull the lever by the east wall. The main empties into the pit."Nobody spoke. The pipe hissed at its valve, and in the shed the baby had gone quiet, the way babies do when everyone around them has."It's nine feet of rock," said Wick. "Why would a stone break under it?""Kestrel's one step made that slab boom like a drum," Kai said. "It's hollow. Nine feet of rock on a bad knee will do more than one step.""And the steam?"That was Tobin. He sat on the iron pot with his hands wrapped in strips of Ysolde's sha
10. No Such Square
[Day-2 (06:10)](The Foundry Yard, Sector 8, Alexandria)Kai woke on a tarp with a stranger's boot print across it.The sky over the yard was the pale grey of the hour before the Curtain's lamps turn white. His mouth tasted of copper. When he touched his lip, the blood had dried to a crust. He held up his right hand and looked at it against the sky.It did not shake. In London it had. He looked at it for longer than the morning deserved. The yard had filled up while he slept. Registry clerks in charcoal grey ringed the pit with their ledgers open. Beyond them, along the wall, a line of men in slate-blue coats waited with every button done up and every boot clean. Rampart pickets. They looked like they had been issued that morning."Held at the Outer Line since nine," a sergeant was telling a clerk, in the flat voice of a man who has said it twice already. "Your sheet had Foundry Lane down as cleared.""It was cleared."The sergeant looked at the pit, and at the grey stone hand on its
