Chapter 1: Thrown Into the White
The thermometer on the Vance kitchen wall read minus thirty-one, and Rowan Ashby was the only person in the house still expected to go outside."The fuel line froze again," Harlan Vance said from his leather chair, not even looking up from the whiskey he rationed like gold. "Fix it, scholarship boy. Before my daughter wakes up cold."Rowan didn't argue. Nineteen days into the Long Freeze, he had stopped arguing about anything. He pulled on the thin jacket they let him keep, the one with the torn cuff, and stepped into the blue dusk that now passed for noon. The cold hit him like a slap. Within three breaths, his nostrils stuck together. Rowan was twenty-three, a thermal engineering graduate with a head full of heat transfer equations that had never once been useful to anyone. He knelt beside the generator shed, thawed the line with a blowtorch, and shielded the flame with his own body against the wind. Above him, the sun was a dim coin behind a sky of ash.The world was dying one degr
Chapter 2: The First Spark
Rowan raised both hands and kept them where she could see them."I'm not armed," he said. "I'm just trying not to die.""People who are trying not to die don't steam." The woman stepped out of the blowing snow, rifle tucked tight against her shoulder. She wore a sun-bleached army jacket two sizes too big and a knit cap pulled low over sharp, tired eyes. "Look at your feet. Look at the ground."He looked. Behind him, a winding trail of bare, wet asphalt marked every step he'd taken from the hill. The snow around it was still hissing."I can explain that," Rowan said."Can you?""No. Not really."The corner of her mouth moved, almost a smile, and then it was gone. "Honest, at least. Sergeant Tess Calder. You're going to walk in front of me, slowly, to that door. If you do anything strange, I'll shoot you in the leg first, then ask questions.""That seems fair.""It isn't. It's just what I've got."The Eastline Bus Depot was a long concrete shed with half its windows boarded up and a doz
Chapter 3: Bound by Warmth
For one long second, nobody in the depot breathed. Then Mara Okafor moved. She tore the coats off the boy, laid him flat, and set the heel of her hand against his small breastbone. "Pip. Come on, baby. Come on."Compressions. One, two, three, four. Her braid swung with each push. Rowan slumped against the bench, his own heartbeat stuttering, and watched the System text bleed pale and thin at the edge of his sight.**[EMBER: 0. BOND THRESHOLD: 60%.]**He had nine percent to go and nothing left to burn.*Think.* That was the one thing Rowan had always been good at. Not courage, not luck. Just cold, patient thinking when everything was on fire. He looked at the numbers again.**[BOND EFFECT: A BOUND SOUL SHARES THE HEARTH. EMBER FLOWS BOTH WAYS.]**Both ways. He read it twice."Mara," he said. His voice rasped. "Stop for a second.""I'm not stopping!""I know. Listen to me." He grabbed her wrist, and she snarled at
Chapter 4: The Ice Trap
The radio went quiet, but nobody in the depot moved.Fifteen people stared at the speaker as if it might bite. A woman near the barrel pulled her toddler tighter. Gus Perrin, who had made a joke about everything since the moment Rowan walked in, had gone gray around the mouth."Okay," Rowan said, and was surprised that his voice held. "Everyone stay calm. Please.""Calm?" A man in a torn ski jacket shot to his feet. "That was Voss. The Citadel Voss. He wants you, so give him what he wants and let the rest of us sleep."A few heads nodded. Rowan felt it in his stomach, the same old ache of being the one people could afford to lose."Sit down, Darren," Tess said."He's going to kill us.""He's going to try." She still hadn't looked away from the radio. "Sit down."Something in her voice put the man back on his bench. Rowan watched her set her rifle against the bus seat and rub her face with both hands, hard, like she was scrubbing off a memory."You said you served under him," Rowan sai
Chapter 5: The Price of Heat
"Get him on the bench! Move!"Mara was already running. Rowan had never seen anyone cross a room that fast. She dropped to her knees beside Gus, tore open his coveralls, and pressed both hands over the wound. Blood welled up between her fingers, dark and slow."Through and through, upper left chest," she said, almost to herself. "Missed the heart. Hit the lung or close to it. Pip, stay with Darren's wife. Rowan!""Here.""I need your fire on this table. Right now."He didn't ask why. He knelt on the other side of Gus and let the Hearth spill outward, and the room warmed to something close to a spring morning. People gasped. The wounded mechanic's gray skin pinked a shade.**[EMBER: 74. "I've been losing people to that for weeks. You're the first thing in this city that's ever been on my side.""Don't get sentiment
Chapter 6: Ivy's Secret
"Say that again," Tess said. She had Ivy Lin pinned against a bus seat with one forearm, the rifle hanging loose at her side. It looked casual. It wasn't. Rowan had known her for six hours and he already understood that Tess Calder was never more dangerous than when she looked relaxed."I said Voss sent me," Ivy croaked. "But not like that. I didn't..." She shut her eyes. "Let me explain. Please.""Let her breathe, Tess," Mara said from the bench.Tess eased back one inch. Ivy slid down the seat and wrapped both arms around her knees. Up close she was prettier than she had any right to be after a blizzard, with big dark eyes and a green scarf knotted at her throat."I was a student at Harrowgate U," she said. "Chemistry. Third year. I did some modeling on the side." She gave a tiny, bitter laugh. "Turns out being the girl everyone looks at is a skill. When the freeze hit, Voss's people took me in. I thought they were saving me. I worked in the Citadel for two weeks. I carried messages
Chapter 7: The First Fire
"Down!" Tess shouted. The first shots tore through the darkness. Muzzle flashes strobed along the rafters. Bullets chewed the shelving, and a pallet of canned beans burst open like a wounded animal.Rowan grabbed Ivy and dragged her behind a steel pillar. Tess landed beside them on one knee, rifle already up, firing at the red lights above. Two of them went out. A man screamed and dropped from the catwalk."Voss!" Rowan yelled. "Where are you?""Right here."The voice came from behind him.Rowan spun. The Hearth flared, and in its orange glow he saw a tall figure walking calmly down the central aisle between the shelves, hands in the pockets of a long black coat. Pale eyes. A neat, handsome face. A faint, tired smile.Frost bloomed beneath each step he took."Interesting," Voss said. "You really don't know what you've got, do you? You're burning bright and loud like a kid with a flare gun. Anyone within ten miles could find you.""Stay back.""Or what?"Rowan didn't have an answer. Hi
Chapter 8: A Monster's Offer
Voss didn't try the door. That was the part that frightened Rowan most. He could hear the man standing on the other side of the iron, close enough that his breath fogged the gap beneath it. He could have burst through in a second. Instead, he leaned against the frame with the patience of someone waiting for a kettle to boil."I know what you're seeing," Voss said. "Number one. Corrupted. It's a nasty little word, isn't it? I stared at it for a good hour the first time."Tess pulled Rowan back from the door by his sleeve. "Don't listen to him.""I have to," Rowan whispered. "If he's right about what the System does, I need to know.""Why? So he can lie to you better?""So I don't become him."She stared at him in the dark. Then she let go of his sleeve."Day one," Voss said, as though they had asked him to start from the beginning. "The sun went dim, and I was standing in a parking lot outside a client's warehouse, watching a hundred people look up at the sky. Then this thing woke up i
Chapter 9: One Warm House
"Mara!"Rowan's voice cracked on her name. It bounced around the empty depot and came back to him unanswered.Tess moved through the wreckage like a hunting dog, rifle raised, checking every bench, every bus seat, every dark corner. Ivy hovered near the doorway with both hands pressed over her mouth. Rowan turned in a slow circle, staring at the stain on the floor, and tried not to think the thing his body was already thinking."It's not hers," Tess said.He swung toward her. "What?""The blood." She crouched and touched the frozen streak with two fingers. "It's a man's boot print, not a woman's. Look at the spacing. Someone was limping, and someone was dragged." She stood slowly. "Doc fired that rifle. You see the shell on the floor? She hit somebody."It was the single most hopeful thing anyone had said in an hour.Something thumped. All three of them froze. The sound came again, a dull knock, from the long yellow bus parked against the east wall.Tess crept toward it, rifle steady.
Chapter 10: The Overload
The Vance Estate looked exactly the way Rowan remembered it, and that was the worst part.Yellow windows. A neat gravel drive swept clean of snow. The generator humming in its shed like a contented cat. Twelve hours ago he had crawled away from this gate in a cotton shirt, convinced he was going to die. Now he walked back up to it alone, hands visible, a coal-black sky pressing down on his shoulders.Alone, he thought. Technically. In his head, two quiet pulses answered him, one steady and calm, one sharp and impatient. Mara, back at the depot with Pip and Gus. Tess, a hundred yards behind him in the idling plow with Ivy, six drums of coal, and a crate of heat bricks stacked like firewood."Remember the signal," Tess's voice said, a whisper in the back of his skull. The bond made it easy to hear her. Too easy. "When the windows go orange.""When the windows go orange," Rowan murmured. The gate stood open. Pruitt, the fat guard, sat in the snow beside it with his hands zip-tied and his
