Odran Pell’s day began as it always did: with the dull hum of fluorescent lights and the rhythmic tap of fingers on keyboards. His cubicle, nestled deep within the administrative labyrinth of the Mirrorgate Medical Center, was a monument to the mundane. Stacks of patient files, color-coded and meticulously organized, rose around him like miniature, paper-based skyscrapers. He was a cog, albeit an essential one, in the vast machine that processed human suffering and healing into billable hours and administrative codes. His job, he often joked to himself, was to ensure that every miracle had a receipt.Today’s docket promised nothing out of the ordinary. A dozen new admissions, a handful of discharges, and the usual cascade of insurance forms requiring his expert scrutiny. He adjusted his glasses, their frames slightly askew from years of unconscious fiddling, and pulled the first file. The smell of sterile paper and faint disinfectant was as comforting as it was pervasive. Then, a new

The blood-red warning pulsated on Odran’s screen, a malevolent eye staring back at him: WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED COST READER DETECTED. INITIATING LOCKDOWN PROTOCOLS. LOCATION TRACED. SECURITY DISPATCHED. The words throbbed, casting a crimson glow on his ashen face. A cold dread gripped him, far more potent than the fear of losing his job. This wasn't a disciplinary action; it was a declaration of war.“They know,” Odran choked out, pushing away from the terminal as if it might physically lash out at him. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat of terror that deafened him to the quiet hum of the administrative core.Maelis, her own terminal now displaying a blank, unresponsive screen, spun around, her face pale, her intense eyes wide with shock. “Who? The system? How can a system… know about you?” Her voice was a strained whisper, tinged with disbelief that rapidly gave way to a dawning horror.“It called me an ‘unauthorized cost reader’,” Odran explained, his voice trembl

The cold night air hit Odran like a physical blow, a sharp contrast to the recirculated, sterile oxygen of the executive wing. He and Maelis didn't stop to catch their breath. They scrambled through the shadows of the alleyway, the sirens of Mirrorgate echoing behind them like the baying of hounds. Every shadow looked like Demitri Quell; every flicker of a streetlamp felt like a security scanner."This way!" a voice hissed from the darkness ahead.A car—a beat-up, non-descript sedan—idled near a dumpster. The passenger door swung open, revealing Ysolde Kett. Her professional blazer was gone, replaced by a dark windbreaker, and her hair was a mess of loose strands."Get in! Now!" she urged.Odran and Maelis piled into the back seat, and the car lurched forward before the doors were even fully shut. Ysolde drove with a frantic, focused energy, weaving through the narrow backstreets of the medical district until the towering silhouette of Mirrorgate was lost behind a screen of low-income
