Chapter 1: Dead Man's Body
The woman who had killed him was humming. That was the first thing Kaelen heard, before the pain, before he understood that he could hear at all. A tuneless little melody, the kind people hum while they wash dishes. Somewhere close, leather creaked and something small and metal clinked against stone. He opened his eyes. The sky was the color of an old bruise. Ash fell out of it in slow gray flakes and settled on his lashes. He was lying on cracked flagstones with his arms thrown wide, like a man dropped from a height, and the stone under his back was strangely warm."Mm," said the humming woman, without looking up. "Still dead, I hope."He turned his head, an inch at a time. She sat cross-legged a few feet away, going through his pockets, which were apparently also hers now. Red hair that pooled on the ground in coils and smoked at the ends. Two black horns swept back from her forehead. A tail with a spade at its tip lay across her lap like a sleeping cat, and every so often the tip t
Chapter 2: Roll for Survival
Ignis was trying very hard not to look relieved. She was failing. Kaelen could see it in the way her shoulders had started to drop, in the long ragged breath she kept clenching her teeth around. It wasn't pain on her face. It was the look of someone sinking into a hot bath after a week in the cold. Then she seemed to remember who she was, and she tore her hand out of his chest. It came free with a wet, ugly sound. She lurched back, caught herself on one palm, and sat down hard on the flagstones with her legs sprawled. Steam rolled off her arm. For the first time since he'd woken, her hair had stopped smoking. The black glass under her feet dimmed from orange to dull gray.Neither of them said anything. Ash ticked down between them.Kaelen lay very still and listened to his own body. The hunger behind his breastbone hadn't gone away. But a minute ago it had been screaming, and now it was only muttering to itself, the way a stomach does after a first bite of bread. He glanced at the win
Chapter 3: Genesis Resonance
Ignis kissed the way she fought: to win, and with teeth.Kaelen's back hit the rusted cot hard enough to make the frame scream. Her mouth was hot enough to hurt, a fever against lips that had gone cold hours ago, and for one dizzy second he forgot to be afraid. It was the warmest thing he had felt in two lives. Her hands were not gentle. They tore the ruined tunic off him like wet paper. Wherever her palms landed, the black veins under his skin hissed and went quiet, and the hunger behind his breastbone leaned toward her like a plant toward a window. He felt her tail coil once around his thigh, tight, possessive, as though she expected him to bolt."Rules," she said against his jaw. Her voice was low and rough, and her breath came out in small puffs of steam. "If you go limp in there, I won't wait for you.""Define limp."She bit his lip, hard enough to taste copper. "Funny.""I'm told it's a gift."Her eyes met his, forge-bright from a hand's breadth away, and for the length of one b
Chapter 4: The Contract of Embers
The hand around his throat was shaking, and Kaelen could not decide whether that was good news."Before you squeeze," he croaked, "I'd like to point out that you can't actually..."She squeezed. For half a second it worked. Her claws bit in, his vision went speckled, and he had time to think, so that's how it ends, then. Then Ignis made a sound he had not heard from her before, a hard, wounded grunt, as if someone had driven a fist into her stomach from the inside. Her fingers sprang open. She folded in half across his chest, coughing a thin cloud of gray smoke onto the cot.[VOID ANCHOR: Partner mana locked against host.] [Hostile intent detected. Core response: CONTRACTION.]"Told you," Kaelen wheezed, rubbing his neck.Ignis rolled off him and hit the floor on all fours. Her hair hung in a tangle over her face. For a moment she stayed there, panting, one hand flat against her breastbone like someone checking for a wound. Then she lunged, quick as a snake, and drove her fist at his
Chapter 5: Cinder Keep
Cinder Keep had been abandoned for six years, and somebody had left the pantry fully stocked.Kaelen stood in the kitchen doorway and did not like it. Salt in sealed crocks. Sacks of barley gone gray but dry. A row of iron pots on their hooks, and a ladle still hanging beside the stove as though the cook had stepped out for a smoke. In every campaign he had ever run, a dungeon that left its chests unlocked was hiding something."What are you doing?" Ignis asked behind him."Being suspicious.""Of soup?""Of soup that lasts six years."She had found herself a gray Church cloak and wore it like an insult, belted over her leather, the little sun cut off the breast. Kaelen wore a quartermaster's spare: wool trousers, boots a size too big and stuffed with rag, a tunic with the sun scratched out. The body fit better than it had yesterday. Mortal Tier 4 showed up in small ways. He had shifted a fallen roof beam this morning without noticing.Ignis had mentioned Hallowgate eleven times since
Chapter 6: The Imp and the Planes
The imp had spent six years locked in a cellar, and he had come out of it with a better business plan than any man Kaelen had ever met."Ransom," the creature repeated, as if the word were a sweet he was rolling around his mouth. He fanned the cards in his claws and studied them with one yellow eye. "I'd say fifty gold. A hundred, if you've got a taste for theater. I do have a thing about being let out of cages in a dramatic fashion.""We're not here to rescue you," Ignis said."No, no, of course you aren't." The imp looked her up and down, from the burned-off Church sun on her cloak to the horns, and gave a little delighted whistle. "Princess Ignis Ashblood. In a Church cloak. Oh, that's rich. That's the best thing I've seen since the garrison started eating their boots."Ignis went stiff. "You know me.""Sweetheart, I know everyone. It's the whole value proposition."He was about the size of a house cat, with gray-green skin, bat wings folded around him like a scarf, and a barbed ta
Chapter 7: Maintenance Cultivation
It took Ignis nineteen hours to admit she needed him again, and she did it by trying to start a fight."Draw," she said.Kaelen looked up from the courtyard wall. He had been working through a set of sword forms with a rusted quartermaster's blade, trying to find out what the dead prince's body remembered. It remembered a surprising amount. Church swordmasters had drilled this boy until his hands bled, and his arms still knew the cuts even when the head behind them didn't.Ignis stood at the other end of the yard with her cloak off and her fists wrapped in pale fire. It was whiter than it had been two days ago, a clean silver-gold, almost pretty. She wasn't holding it still. The flame shivered along her knuckles, and her breath came a little too fast."The contract has a clause for this," she said."Dispute resolution. A regulated duel, no lethal blows." He set the sword down. "What's the dispute?""You know what it is.""I really don't."She came at him anyway. She hit like a falling
