Prologue
Nineteen Years AgoA domain broke into the small town of Grimhaven without warning, opening a rift between reality and a place no ordinary human was ever meant to see.Within minutes, the once peaceful town descended into chaos. Monstrous creatures poured out of the domain, spreading through the streets and attacking everything in their path. Buildings crumbled beneath their assaults, vehicles were overturned, and fires spread from one block to another as people desperately fled for their lives.Screams filled the air.Parents ran through the streets, calling out their children’s names. Children cried for mothers who were nowhere to be found. Some people stumbled through the smoke with blood running down their faces, while others dragged injured loved ones away from the creatures hunting them. Families who had been sharing meals only moments earlier were torn apart in the space of a few heartbeats. Some tried to hide inside their homes, locking their doors and pushing furniture agains
Chapter 1
A century ago, mysterious rifts known as domains began appearing throughout the world of Asterra. Each domain led to an unknown environment filled with monstrous creatures, dangerous magical energy, and relics left behind by an ancient civilization. Ordinary weapons were useless against many of these creatures, and humanity soon learned that only those with awakened magical abilities could fight them. These people became known as Hunters.Hunters are ranked according to the amount of magical power within their bodies, from F-rank at the bottom to S-rank at the top. Their abilities determine their place in society, their opportunities, and the dangers they are qualified to face. However, once a person’s magical potential is established, no amount of individual effort can change its limits. In a world where power determines everything, those without magic are left with little hope of changing their fate.Present Day…Verizon was a bustling modern city filled with towering skyscrapers
Chapter 2
The moment the Hunters stepped through the fog, they found themselves in a beautiful forest. The sky above was clear, sunlight streamed through the towering trees, and lush greenery covered everything in sight, including the ground beneath their feet.“Wow!”Several Hunters couldn’t help but marvel at the scenery. Most Level One domains they had visited were far less inviting. Some consisted of dark underground caves, while others were filled with winding mazes and treacherous paths that required them to proceed with caution. But this forest was different. It felt as though they had stepped into another world, one so beautiful and peaceful that it was difficult to believe they were standing inside a domain. One of the women suddenly rushed toward a patch of glowing plants.“Glowing herbs! These could be worth a fortune!”Excited, she began picking the herbs and stuffing them into her bag.Seeing this, several other Hunters started searching the surrounding vegetation for similar plant
Chapter 3
Alan’s eyes widened as he instinctively stumbled backward. He stared at Malcolm’s lifeless body, struggling to understand what he had just witnessed.Standing behind the fallen Hunter was one of the three unfamiliar young men. His sword was still stained with blood, and a satisfied grin spread across his face.“What the hell are you doing?!” Howard shouted, staring at him in horror. “Why did you kill him?!”Only then did Alan fully realize how little he knew about these strangers. He had participated in several Level One domain raids with this group. He knew most of the Hunters who regularly took on such assignments, at least by face. Yet these three men were complete strangers, and something about their presence had bothered him ever since they entered the domain. Now, as he looked at them, a troubling realization finally clicked into place.‘That’s right.’ His gaze swept across the three men. ‘There isn’t a single healer among them.’It might have seemed like an insignificant detail
Chapter 4
Alan opened his eyes and found himself on an island. He staggered to his feet, staring at his surroundings in shock. Just moments ago, he had been stabbed in the back and fallen into a stream inside a domain. He could still remember the pain, the cold water, and the terrible realization that he was going to die.Yet here he was, standing on unfamiliar ground with no visible wound on his body.‘Am I not dead? Or is this the afterlife?’A gentle breeze swept across the island, carrying an inexplicable sense of sorrow. The landscape was filled with vast meadows, beautiful lakes, and winding streams. Everything looked peaceful, almost like the forest where he had died, but something about the place made him uncomfortable. The flowers seemed to droop beneath an invisible weight, while the trees stood silently beneath the pale sky. Even the air felt heavy, as though the island itself had experienced more suffering than any living being could bear.Translucent clouds drifted across the sky,
Chapter 5
“What in the world is this place?!” Alan’s voice rose before he could stop himself. “Is this hell?!” The man beside him abruptly turned and clamped a hand over his mouth. “Shhhh!” His expression was stern as he glanced around to make sure nobody had heard Alan’s outburst. Then, noticing several guards watching them, he immediately bowed his head in a show of submission. One of the armored figures approached. Alan’s heart skipped. He had no idea what would happen if the guards discovered he didn’t belong here, but judging by the fear in the faces of the people around him, he had no intention of finding out. The guard stopped in front of them. “Pray, what dost thou both stand about for? Go hence and assist in catching fish for Lord Sorrowshade, or find some other task to occupy thy worthless selves!” The stranger immediately bowed. “Of course, my lord. We shall do so at once.” He seized Alan’s arm again and hurried away before the guard could question them further. Alan foll
Chapter 6
Alan had no idea who this Lord Sorrowshade was, but if the fear surrounding his name was anything to go by, the man was certainly no ordinary opponent. He clenched his fists, trying to steady his thoughts. He had barely survived as an E-rank Hunter in his own world. Now, after being killed by the so-called Liberator Alliance, he had somehow ended up in a strange place where even death was considered a luxury. And he was expected to defeat its ruler. What the hell have I gotten myself into?Still, if this was a trial, there had to be a reward for completing it. There also had to be something he could use to fight whatever awaited him. After all, what if Lord Sorrowshade was a monster usually found in Level Four or Level Five domains? Those were the kinds of threats that typically required A-rank or S-rank Hunters to handle. And Alan?He was an E-rank Hunter who struggled against even the most basic monsters.‘Is there something I can use?’ he asked silently, hoping for an answer from w
Chapter 7
Alan frowned, wondering if he just got this stranger in trouble. He had enough problems of his own, yet this man was now suffering because he had tried to protect him.“Take him to the mountain as well!” the enforcer ordered. “Let him meet his end alongside his so-called friend!”Alan could only sigh as the guards dragged them both away.He had no idea what awaited them on the mountain, but judging by the way the old man had begged for mercy earlier, it couldn’t be anything good.“Move!”One of the enforcers shoved Alan forward. He stumbled and fell onto his knees with a sharp gasp, pain spreading through his already battered body.“This is torture,” he muttered under his breath. He forced himself back onto his feet, breathing heavily as he occasionally glanced at the man walking beside him.The stranger’s face was pale, and fear had settled into his eyes. Even so, he had not complained about being dragged into the same punishment.Alan didn’t understand him.Why would anyone risk the
Chapter 8
Inside the cave in the mountain, a series of lamps cast a dim, flickering light along a narrow path that seemed to ascend indefinitely, giving the impression of a trail meant to be followed. Alan couldn’t shake the unsettling feeling that crept over him as he stood there with his unknown friend. As they ventured deeper into the cave, they came across a wooden staircase with a rope railing on one side. The stairs climbed toward an unseen destination, disappearing into the darkness above.Alan swallowed nervously and turned to his companion, the unease clear in his voice. “Is this how it always is? What happened to the others who were sent here?” he asked, his eyes darting around as if expecting someone or something to emerge from the darkness and attack them. The man shrugged, though his restless movements made it clear that he was just as uncomfortable.“All I know is that others have been sent hither before, and none have ever returned. There is manifestly something amiss in this
Chapter 9
Alan paused in front of the door, taking a deep breath to steady his nerves. He braced himself for whatever might be lurking on the other side. It couldn’t be a dragon… right? Or perhaps some terrifying monster far more dangerous than anything he had encountered in his previous life?In a place like this, where reality often defied logic, nothing seemed too far-fetched and considering everything that had happened since his death, he couldn’t rule out any possibility. ‘I have to leave this place,’ he thought, the determination hardening within him. ‘No one said anything was easy.’ He had already come this far. Turning back now wouldn’t solve anything.“What dost thou wait for?” his companion whispered urgently, his eyes darting around as if expecting an enemy to leap out of the shadows at any moment. “Thou didst bring us here. We should see this matter to its end.”Alan glanced at him, trying to mask his own anxiety. The man’s nervousness was contagious, and Alan was starting to regr
