CHAPTER 1 The Canceled Wedding
Beep. Beep. Beep. The sound of the heart monitor echoed faintly and steadily in the ICU room of Lonel City Hospital.Rendi Martin lay on the bed. An oxygen tube was attached to his nose, and several wires were connected to his chest. His face was pale, his lips dry.To the passing nurses, Rendi was just an ordinary comatose patient. The only difference was that this patient was the former number one tycoon of Hakward City who went bankrupt in a single day.But Rendi was not sleeping. He stood in an empty, dark space. There was no floor beneath his feet, no walls around him. Strangely, his chest no longer hurt."Am I dead?"His voice did not echo. The words simply vanished into the darkness.Fragments of light floated in front of him. Some were small, some were large, and all moved slowly in the air. The largest fragment was red.Rendi reached out and touched it.The dark space instantly changed. Rendi was back standing in the most luxurious wedding hall in Hakward City, the place he h
CHAPTER 2 The Patient Who Should Have Died
Rendi opened his eyes. The first thing he saw was a white ceiling and overly bright fluorescent lights. The smell of medicine immediately filled his nose. Beside the bed, the heart monitor beeped softly again.Beep. Beep. Beep.Rendi tried moving his fingers, and they moved. He took a deep breath, and his chest did not hurt at all.'I am alive.'Rendi raised his right hand in front of his face. On his ring finger sat a silver ring engraved with ancient letters, the exact same ring he had touched in the dark space.None of it was a dream."Mr. Rendi? Can you hear me?"A female doctor stood beside the bed. Her hair was tied back, and the sleeves of her white coat were wrinkled from being rolled up.Her name tag read Dr. Nadia. She looked to be in her late twenties.Rendi nodded."Please state your full name.""Rendi Martin." His voice was hoarse."Date of birth?"Rendi stated it. Nadia matched the answer with the clipboard in her hand."Do you know how long your heart stopped earlier?"
CHAPTER 3 An Unexpected Mission
[Ding!] [No suitable missions currently available.] [Missions appear based on the Host's situation. The System will notify when an opportunity arises.]Rendi stared at the text. His smile vanished."Then why did you ask me what I wanted?"[To record the Host's objective.] [Objective recorded: become strong and fight Evelyn and Alex Wijaya.]"That's it?" Rendi kept his voice down so Nurse Wulan wouldn't wake up. "You're a revenge system, right? Give me a way."[Analysis: The Host has no money, no place to live, and has not mastered the first ability.] [Suggestion: recover your energy tonight.]The blue screen closed on its own.Rendi punched the mattress lightly. He wanted to argue, but the analysis was correct. He truly had nothing.Rendi lay back and stared at the ceiling until his eyes grew heavy. The next morning, Nadia came in carrying a tablet and a cup of coffee.Nadia examined Rendi one more time. His blood pressure, heart rate, and this morning's lab results remained excellent
CHAPTER 4 Grandpa Harun's Owl
The old vendor had already reached out his hand to accept the young man's money."Wait, Grandpa," Rendi said. The young man turned with an annoyed face. "What are you going to bargain with? Twenty dollars?"Rendi did not answer. He observed the man closely. His shirt was branded, his watch was expensive, and his shoes were shiny. A person like that would not come to a flea market to buy a cheap wooden statue.Unless he knew there was something inside it."Do you know this guy, Grandpa?" Rendi asked. The old man nodded hesitantly. "Young man Steven. He has passed by here twice this week. He said he owns an antique shop downtown.""Passed by twice, and only buying it today?"Steven snorted. "Does it matter? I just took a liking to it today."Rendi stared at the owl statue. He could just stay quiet and let Steven walk away with the gold coins. Or he could lie, persuade the old man, and take home five gold coins that were not his.Rendi knew exactly how it felt to be treated like that. Tw
CHAPTER 5 The Garage at the End of the Alley
Rendi knew the man. His name was Marco, his personal driver for six years.Three months ago, Marco was fired. Rendi remembered the termination letter because he had signed it himself."Marco," Rendi said quietly.Marco picked up his bag of oil without taking his eyes off Rendi. He noticed the wrinkled shirt, the coffee stain, and the flip-flops Rendi had borrowed from Grandpa Harun."Good lord, Boss," Marco finally said. "You look worse than on TV."Grandpa Harun came out of the house. "You two know each other?""I used to be his driver, Grandpa," Marco said, handing over the bag of oil. "Before his fiancée called me a thief."Rendi did not reply. He had no answer to that statement.Grandpa Harun looked back and forth between the two of them, then went back inside the house. "Don't chat in my yard. There are too many mosquitoes."Marco's garage was at the end of the alley, only five houses away from Grandpa Harun's. The building was small, with a corrugated iron roof and a floor black
CHAPTER 6 The Forty-Dollar Watch
The next morning, Rendi woke up to the sound of a neighbor's rooster. The first thing he did was touch the ring on his finger.[Ding!] [Day 3 login successful.] [Reward: X-Ray Vision upgraded to Lv.2.] [Longer usage duration. Dizziness effect reduced.]Rendi blinked a few times. His eyes felt lighter, and the world around him looked sharper. He gave a small smile. Today he didn't forget to claim his reward.By seven in the morning, Rendi was already squatting on the floor of Marco's garage. His hand held a wrench, and the first motorcycle tire lay in front of him."Not like that, Boss." Marco snatched the wrench. "Turn the bolt to the left. Left. You studied abroad, right? Didn't they teach you left and right?""They taught me economics.""Economics can't unscrew a bolt."Rendi tried again. This time the bolt moved. It took Rendi forty minutes for one tire, while Marco could finish it in ten. When the third tire was done, Rendi's borrowed t-shirt was soaked in sweat. His palms were bl
CHAPTER 7 A Call for Mother
Rendi did not immediately answer Steven's question. He stepped onto the sidewalk and stopped right beside the window of the black car."A watch," Rendi said. "An item from the flea market.""What watch?""The watch you missed."Steven's smile faded. The man turned off his car engine and rested his arm on the door."Twice in two days, Rendi. Yesterday a statue, today a watch." Steven tapped his fingers on the car door. "A bankrupt man suddenly having such sharp eyes. Where did you learn that?""From five years of being conned. Over time, I learned to see things where the inside differs from the packaging."Steven let out a short laugh, but his eyes remained cold."I have an offer." Steven took a business card from his shirt pocket. "Work for me. You find the goods, I sell them. You get twenty percent."Rendi stared at the business card without taking it. The card was thick, black, and written in gold lettering: Steven Hale, Hale Antiques."Why would you bother offering me a job?""Beca
CHAPTER 8 Mr. Darto's Copy
"Forged?" Rendi sat up straight on the back steps. "Mom, did Mr. Darto say whose signature was forged?""He didn't want to tell me," his mother answered. "He said you have to see it for yourself. He left his phone number here.""Can you read the number for me, Mom?"On the other end of the line, the sound of paper unfolding could be heard. His mother read the number slowly, digit by digit.Rendi repeated each number aloud to avoid writing it down wrong. He jotted the number on the scrap of newspaper Grandpa Harun had given him, right below the address of Mr. Lawrence's shop."Rendi," his mother said. "Don't cause any new problems, okay.""I won't, Mom. I just want to know the truth.""Alright then. Make sure you eat properly."The call ended. Rendi stared at his phone screen for a moment, then immediately dialed Mr. Darto's number. The dial tone rang once, and someone picked up right away."Hello," said a deep, calm old man's voice."Mr. Darto? This is Rendi."The man on the other end
CHAPTER 9 The Office on Westbrook Street
Rendi walked out of the coffee shop with the brown folder under his arm. Mr. Darto was still sitting inside, making a phone call in a low voice. The bus stop was across from the station. Rendi crossed the street and waited for a downtown-bound bus.His phone vibrated as the bus arrived. There was a text message from Mr. Darto."I have contacted the lawyer. Her name is Dinda Prameswari. She will meet you in front of Graham's office at one in the afternoon. Do not do anything before she arrives."Rendi read the message twice, then boarded the half-full bus.Westbrook Street was a row of old three-story office buildings. Notary Graham's office was in a cream-colored building with a brass nameplate beside its door.A large security guard stood in front of the glass door. Every guest who entered had to show an appointment letter.Rendi sat on the bus stop bench across from the building. The clock on his phone showed ten minutes past twelve.'There is still time. Let's take a look first.'R
CHAPTER 10 The Chart on the Cracked Screen
The black sedan drove away. Rendi stood up from the bus stop bench, but the car had already turned at the end of Westbrook Street.Dinda also stood up. Her face grew tense."Was that Alex Wijaya?" Dinda asked."Yes.""And you said the document is in Graham's bag." Dinda looked at Rendi suspiciously. "You haven't answered my question. How did you know?"Rendi couldn't answer honestly. He chose the most logical answer."Graham rushed out right after you called. His briefcase was locked. A person who is just going out for lunch doesn't lock his bag."Dinda stayed silent for a few seconds. The lawyer obviously didn't completely believe him, but she didn't argue either."If the document is being taken out of the notary's office, we have to move faster," Dinda said. "I will file a confiscation request to the court. That document needs to be secured before they have a chance to alter it.""How much will it cost?"Dinda opened her notebook and calculated quickly. "Court fees, bailiff fees, an
