Chapter 1_The Useless Husband
On the night the Feng family threw Adrian West out of their house, he was holding the most valuable thing in the world. Not one person in the room knew it. Adrian did not know it either. Not yet.It started with laughter."Look at him," a man said from the third table. "Two years in this family, and he still wears the same old suit."The laugh rolled across the grand hall like a cold wind. Two hundred guests sat under bright crystal lights, eating food that cost more than most people earn in a month. It was the fortieth anniversary of Feng Antiques, the biggest antique house in the city, and everyone important was there. Now every one of them turned to look at the man standing near the door.Adrian kept his face calm. He had learned this a long time ago. When people laugh at you, the worst thing you can do is show them it hurts. He was twenty eight years old, tall and thin, with tired eyes that looked like they had not slept well in years. His suit was clean but old. The sleeves were
Chapter 2 _The Thief Has A Name
Adrian's hands were bleeding before he reached the top of the wall. The stone was old and rough, and it cut his palms like small knives. He did not feel it. He pulled himself over and dropped into the narrow lane on the other side. The cold night air hit his face.Far ahead, a black shape ran along the rooftops."Adrian!" Helen's voice came from behind the wall. "Adrian, where are you going?"He could not answer her. If he stopped for one second, the man would be gone, and so would the last piece of his grandfather's work. Two years of searching, and it had taken one hand in a black glove to snatch it away.So he ran.The Feng estate sat at the edge of the old city, and Adrian knew this part of town better than anyone alive. For two years he had walked every street, every market, every dark corner, looking for the jade. He knew which lanes were short and which were long. He knew which gates were never locked. The thief was fast, but he was running over roofs, and roofs go around thing
Chapter 3_The Gate
Adrian ran like his life depended on it. But it was not his life he was afraid for.The old city was dark and wet. His ribs burned with every step, and the cut on his hand had opened again. He did not care. He jumped off the roof, landed hard in an alley, and ran toward the Feng estate with the half jade pressed against his chest.Ten minutes. He had left her alone for ten minutes. He took the shortcut through the fish market. Then he went through the broken door, down Tea Lane, and over the low wall. Now every street he had walked for two years was helping him. His breath came out in white clouds. His mind kept saying one thing again and again. Please be there. Please be okay.He reached the back wall of the estate and climbed it in three seconds. At the top, he stopped.Below him, near the back gate, a black van sat with its engine running. Its side door was open. Two big men in dark coats stood next to it, and between them was Helen. She was fighting. One man held her arm. She twis
Chapter 4_A Deal With The Devil
Adrian did not take Victor Han's hand. He just stood there in the garden and looked at the green string hanging from the white jacket."Not here," Victor said, still smiling. "Come. The Fengs have a nice study. I am sure Madam Feng will not mind."He turned to Madam Feng, who was fixing her hair with shaking fingers. "Aunt Grace, may I borrow your son in law for ten minutes? We have some business to talk about.""Business?" Madam Feng laughed, but it came out thin. "With him? Mr. Han, he has no business. He has no anything.""Then it will be a short talk," Victor said kindly.Helen stepped forward. "Adrian is hurt. He needs a doctor.""Then I will be quick," Victor said. He looked at her for a moment, and something cold moved behind his smile. "Do not worry, Miss Feng. I only want to talk."Adrian looked at Helen and gave a small nod. She did not look happy, but she stepped back. The study was on the second floor. It smelled of old paper and tea. One wall was full of books, and on the
Chapter 5_The Old Pier
Adrian did not go to the pier right away.He sat on the narrow bed for a long time with the phone in his hand. His heart said, Marcus is your friend. His mind said, Victor Han told you the truth. Both could not be right. At last he stood up. He pulled up a loose board under the bed, the one he had hidden things under for two years. He took the half jade from his pocket, wrapped it in an old cloth, and put it inside. Then he pushed the board back and covered it with his shoe.If it was a trap, they would not get the jade.He needed something to carry in its place. He went out through the back door and walked to the garbage bin behind the Feng shop. It was a dirty job, but he knew the shop owners threw broken things there every week. After a few minutes, he found what he wanted. A small piece of green glass, cracked, about the size of his hand.In the dark, it looked almost like the real thing. He put it in his pocket and walked out of the back gate without telling anyone. The old pier
Chapter 6_The Man With The Cane
Adrian heard the gun click, and his whole body went cold.He could not turn his head. The arm around his neck was still tight, and black spots were swimming in front of his eyes. But he heard Helen stop running. Her heels went quiet on the wooden boards."Nobody move," a rough voice said from the road.It was not the voice of a Han man. Adrian knew it. It was old Chen, the head guard of the Feng house. He had worked for the family for thirty years, and he never smiled, not even at weddings."Let go of Mr. West," Chen said. "Or I will shoot the first man who takes another step."Behind Chen, two more guards stepped out of the car. Both of them were holding guns too.For a moment, nobody breathed. The river made a soft sound against the pier. A boat rocked somewhere in the dark. Then slow footsteps came out of the shadows. They were not in a hurry. Each step was followed by a small tap, like a stick hitting wood.An old man walked into the light of the car. He was maybe seventy, thin an
Chapter 7_The Letter In The Locked Drawer
Adrian sat very still in the back of the car.Helen's words kept running in his head. A letter. His grandfather's handwriting. Written the day before he died."Are you sure?" he asked. "Helen, are you really sure?""I saw it with my own eyes." She held the yellow page tight. "I was fifteen, and I was looking for a pen in my father's desk. I found a drawer with a small lock. The lock was broken that day, so I opened it. Inside was one old letter and a heavy box. My father came in and shouted at me. He never shouts. I never forgot it."Chen looked at them in the mirror. "Miss Feng, should I drive on?""Yes. Drive fast."The Feng house was dark and quiet when they arrived. The guests were gone. The big hall was empty, and the paper lanterns hung in the garden like tired eyes. Madam Feng's light was off. Kevin's car was not in the yard."My father will be in his study," Helen whispered. "He never sleeps before two."They went up the back stairs without a sound. At the end of the hallway,
Chapter 8_The Price Of A Family
For a few seconds, nobody in the study moved.Mr. Feng looked at his wife like he was seeing a stranger. The seal sat in her palm, small and gray, with the carved tiger looking up at the lamp. Helen's mouth was open, but no sound came out."Grace," Mr. Feng said at last. His voice was very low. "Tell me this is a joke.""It is not a joke, Robert." Madam Feng stepped into the room. Her chin was high, but her eyes would not stay on his face. "I took it from your drawer three days ago. I had a key made years ago. You never noticed, because you never noticed anything about me.""Mother," Helen whispered. "Why?""Why?" Madam Feng laughed, and it was a tired, ugly sound. "Because someone in this house has to be smart. Do you know how much we owe, Helen? Do you know that the shop has been bleeding money for three years? Your father sits in his study reading old letters while the bank sends me notices every week. I was going to lose everything. The house, the shop, the name my family built fo
CHAPTER 9: THE HAND IN THE DARK
The dark was so thick that Adrian could not see his own fingers.Somewhere close, a woman was screaming. It was Madam Feng. Somewhere else, a chair was rolling across the floor. Glass crunched under heavy shoes. The cold wind from the broken window pushed the curtains into the room, and they moved like ghosts. The hand on Adrian's sleeve did not let go."Do not move," the voice whispered again. It was an old voice, rough like sand, but very calm. "Count to three with me. Then walk where I pull you."Adrian did not count. He did not walk. He did the one thing the voice told him not to do.He turned toward Helen. Two seconds ago, she had been standing by the desk with Victor's gun pointed at her chest. Now there was only black where she had been. Adrian reached out with his free hand and felt nothing but air. His heart was beating so hard that it hurt."Helen," he said. Not loud. Just enough."Here." Her voice came from his left, very close. It was shaking. "Adrian, I am here."His fing
CHAPTER 10: THE BOOKBINDER'S SHOP
For a moment, Adrian could not breathe. The canal kept moving softly beside them. A dog barked somewhere far away. The moon sat on the water like a white coin. Everything in the world was calm and normal, and inside Adrian's chest, something was falling and falling and would not stop."Who?" he said. His voice came out like a broken thing. "Who was it?"Old Lu did not answer. He looked back at the iron gate they had just come through. From deep inside the tunnel came that heavy sound again. Boom. Then a crack, like wood splitting."Not here," Old Lu said. "They are almost through. If they find us sitting by the water like ducks, nobody will hear the rest of this story. Not you. Not me. Not her.""I am not moving one step until you tell me.""Adrian." Helen stood up and touched his arm. Her face was still wet from crying, but her voice was steady now. "He is right. Please. My father did not send us away so we could die by a canal."Adrian looked at her. Then at the old man. Then at the
