Chapter 1: The First Death is the Hardest
The air tasted like a mixture of burnt rubber and old copper. Rafael Kusuma choked, his lungs burning as he dragged himself upright against a wall of crumbling brick. Before his eyes, a translucent blue screen flickered into existence, humming with a low, rhythmic vibration."What the... what is this?" Rafael wheezed, rubbing his eyes. "Is this some kind of joke? Hey! Is anyone there?"The screen pulsed in response.[SYSTEM INITIALIZATION COMPLETE][HOST: RAFAEL KUSUMA][STATUS: CRITICAL]"Host? Critical?" Rafael stared at his trembling hands, coated in a layer of grey ash. "Am I in a game? This has to be a dream. I was just... I was just at the office. I was heading to get coffee."He looked up, and his heart skipped a beat. The alleyway he sat in was part of a city that looked like it had been put through a meat grinder. Skyscrapers were jagged teeth against a sky the color of a fresh bruise. There were no birds, no hum of traffic only the whistle of wind through hollow windows."Ok

Chapter 2: The Girl with the Crossbow
"Shiva, please tell me I'm not losing my mind," Rafael whispered, his fingers cramping around the jagged iron rebar. "Please tell me this is just a really vivid, very painful lucid dream.""I have already informed you, Rafael, that your current state of existence is entirely real," Shiva’s voice echoed in his mind, cool and resonant. "And if you do not begin moving toward the staircase to your left, your next death will be equally real.""Right, the stairs," Rafael muttered, dragging his feet forward. "And there's someone down there? A girl? I heard her scream.""Indeed. Mirella Pranata. She is currently cornered on the second floor," Shiva said. "A Shade-Hound has her trapped. If you do not intervene, her probability of survival is zero percent.""And what are my chances if I do intervene?" Rafael asked, kicking open the heavy steel door of the stairwell. "Like, five percent?""Four point two percent, actually," Shiva corrected him. "Though with your knowledge of the hound's behavior

Chapter 3: The First Achievement
The floor heaved like the deck of a ship in a storm. Dust chattered from the ceiling, burying them in a grey, suffocating fog."Move!" Rafael lunged, his hand clamping around Mirella’s wrist before she could freeze again."The exit! The exit is that way!" Mirella shouted, her eyes wide, but her feet were rooted to the spot as the skyscraper’s structural steel groaned—a sound like a giant’s teeth grinding together."No, that way is a death trap! Trust me! Into the shop!" Rafael yanked her, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird."Are you insane? That’s a dead end! It’s a storefront!""Just move!"They dived into the shattered remains of a pharmacy just as a massive, obsidian-plated limb the size of a redwood tree slammed into the street outside. The shockwave blew the remaining glass out of the frames, showering them in glittering, razor-sharp dust. The building screamed, vibrating with a force that threatened to liquefy their internal organs. They scrambled behind a

Chapter 4: A Precarious Trust
The blue glow of the system notification faded, leaving the basement in a oppressive, suffocating darkness. The only light came from a flickering chemical lantern Mirella had clicked on a dim, sickly green beam that barely cut through the dust.Rafael stared at the wall where the system message had been, his chest tight. The weight of his choice settled into his bones. "So, that’s it? I’m stuck here now? If I die, I don’t go back to the alley? I go back to this?"Mirella sat on a rusted crate, her fingers moving with practiced, rhythmic precision as she dismantled her crossbow to wipe away the grit. "That’s how it works, Rafael. You stop looking back. You start looking at what’s in front of you.""Easy for you to say," Rafael muttered, leaning his back against the damp concrete. He watched her. Her hands were scarred, her knuckles calloused. She looked like a machine, but there was a tremor in her jaw she couldn't quite hide. "How long have you been out here? In the ruins?"She didn't

Chapter 5: The Second Reset
The world did not fade to black. It shredded.Rafael felt the sickening sensation of his soul being pulled through a needle’s eye, the warmth of Mirella’s desperation replaced by the biting, metallic chill of the alleyway. The smell of burnt rubber and old copper surged into his nostrils, forcing a ragged, hysterical gasp from his throat."No," he sobbed, clawing at his chest. "No, no, no. I was right there! She was right there!"He was back against the brick wall. His collarbone didn't ache. His shoulder wasn't shredded by a lead bullet. He was whole, he was healthy, and he was completely, utterly alone."Welcome back, Rafael," Shiva’s voice chimed, indifferent as a clock. "Total time elapsed since last checkpoint: precisely twenty-seven minutes.""Twenty-seven minutes?" Rafael choked out, his fingers digging into the soot-stained brick. "I spent twenty-seven minutes dying, fighting, and connecting with her, and it was all for nothing? I’m back at square one?""You are back at the ch

Chapter 6: The Scavenger Hunt
The silence of the hallway was heavy, the air tasting of pulverized concrete and the copper tang of the creature Rafael had just butchered. He didn’t wait for Mirella to find her footing. He moved toward the stairwell, his boots crunching on the layer of grey grit that coated every surface in this godforsaken city."Wait," Mirella called out, her voice sharp, echoing off the cracked tiles. "Where are you going? We need to talk about why you knew that thing’s pattern. Why you’re acting like this is a scripted play."Rafael didn't turn around. "You want to talk, Mirella? We can talk while we move. But if we stand here, we’re just sitting ducks for the next pack. And trust me, there are others."Mirella caught up, her pace brisk, her hand still resting on the hilt of her bolt-action crossbow. "Others? What others? How would you know what’s waiting in the dark?""I heard them," Rafael lied smoothly, his voice devoid of the tremor he’d felt just hours ago. "Before you screamed. There were

Chapter 7: Migration of the Point
The air inside the safe house was stale, tasting of ozone and dust, but to Rafael, it felt like oxygen after being held underwater for days. He collapsed onto a moth-eaten sofa that looked like it had been salvaged from a landfill, his chest rising and falling in heavy, ragged hitches.Mirella moved to the window, peering through a crack in the boarded-up shutters. She checked the street below once, twice, before finally dropping her crossbow onto the table with a heavy thud."We’re clear for now," she said, her voice sounding unnervingly loud in the small, cramped room. "For now being the operative phrase. You realize we’re effectively sitting in a tin can, right?"Rafael wiped the grime from his face with the back of his hand. "A tin can that isn't actively falling apart or trying to eat me. I’ll take it. You want some water?"He fished a plastic bottle from his pack, the water sloshing with a hollow, pathetic sound. He tossed it to her."I’m more interested in why you’re staring at
