Andre did not go back to his room that night.

He walked the streets until the sky turned grey, his mind replaying the warehouse over and over. Mara's shoulder slamming into his chest. Her voice, sharp and certain. Go. Now.

By the time the sun rose, he had made a decision.

He was going back.

Marrow Street looked different in daylight. Quiet. Ordinary. The kind of street nobody would ever suspect of holding secrets.

Andre found the warehouse easily enough, the same cracked pavement, the same faded number seventeen painted above the door.

The door was locked.

Andre pressed his face against the dusty window beside it, cupping his hands around his eyes to block the morning glare.

The warehouse was empty.

Not just empty of people. Empty of everything. No table. No lamp. No overturned chair from Mara's fight with Grant. No sign that anyone had ever set foot inside, let alone fought for their life there only hours before.

Andre's stomach dropped.

He tried the door again, rattling the handle uselessly, then walked around to the back alley where he had escaped the night before. Even the alley looked wrong somehow, too clean, too quiet, as if the entire street had been wiped of any proof that Callum Voss, or Grant, or Mara had ever existed.

"They do that," a voice said behind him.

Andre spun around fast, fists raised, before he recognized the old woman standing a few feet away. Mrs. Duvall, from the vegetable stall at the market, wrapped in a heavy shawl despite the morning heat.

"Mrs. Duvall." Andre lowered his hands, embarrassed. "You startled me."

"You look terrible, boy." She studied him with sharp, knowing eyes. "Whatever happened to you last night, it is still sitting on your face."

Andre hesitated. "You said they do that. What did you mean?"

Mrs. Duvall glanced up and down the empty street before answering, her voice dropping low. "This is not the first time that a warehouse has emptied overnight. Happened once before, years back. Police came, found nothing, and stopped asking questions the very same week." She shook her head slowly. "Whoever owns that building has friends in places that make problems disappear."

"Do you know who owns it?"

"No, and neither does anyone else who wants to keep breathing." Mrs. Duvall's eyes flicked down to Andre's jacket pocket, where the shape of the phone was barely visible beneath the fabric. "Whatever you are mixed up in, boy, be careful. This city eats people like you for breakfast."

She walked away without waiting for an answer, leaving Andre alone on the empty street with nothing but questions and a growing, sick feeling that he had lost Mara before he had even had the chance to truly know her.

Back in his room above the shoe shop, Andre sat on the edge of the bed and pulled out the phone.

"Show me something," he said quietly, knowing it would not answer, knowing it never answered questions directly. "Please. Show me if she is alive."

The screen stayed dark for a long moment.

Then, slowly, it lit up.

Andre's heart leapt, hope flooding through him for just a second, before the words on the screen crushed it flat again.

[REQUEST DENIED.]

[THE PHONE DOES NOT ANSWER QUESTIONS.]

[THE PHONE PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES.]

Andre's jaw tightened in frustration. "Then give me an opportunity. Give me something I can actually use."

As if it had been waiting for exactly those words, the screen flickered and changed.

GAME: none

EVENT: PRIVATE AUCTION

LOCATION: HARWICK GALLERY

DATE: THREE DAYS FROM NOW

ITEM: UNLISTED

POTENTIAL VALUE: SIGNIFICANT

NOTE: A FAMILIAR FACE WILL BE PRESENT.

Andre stared at the words, his pulse quickening. This was different from anything the phone had shown him before. No numbers to memorize. No lottery balls to watch. An event. A location. A warning wrapped inside a promise.

A familiar face.

Voss, Andre thought immediately. Or Grant. Or worse, someone he had not even met yet.

Or maybe, a small and desperate part of him whispered, Mara.

Andre's hands tightened around the phone.

He had two hundred and ten dollars to his name, a locked room above a shoe shop, and a growing list of enemies who had already proven they would kill to take what he was holding.

And now the only lead he had, the only chance of learning anything real about the people hunting him, sat three days away inside a gallery he had never heard of, guarded by wealth and power far beyond anything he currently possessed.

Andre looked at his reflection in the dark corner of the window glass. Thin. Tired. Still wearing the same torn jacket he had been wearing the night Claire's father shut the door on him.

If he wanted to survive long enough to reach that auction, he could not walk in looking like the man he used to be.

He needed money. Real money. Enough to buy a suit, a story, a reason for people like Voss's world to believe he belonged there.

He looked back down at the phone screen, at the countdown quietly ticking beneath the auction details, counting down the hours until his next real chance.

Three days.

Whatever happened at that gallery, Andre understood one thing with sudden, cold clarity.

He was no longer simply trying to survive.

He was walking straight toward the people who had made Mara disappear, and he had absolutely no idea if he would be able to walk back out again.

"I am going to see who it is," Andre said quietly."That is an enormous risk," Sara said immediately. "If that is Hale's people, or Diane's, walking outside is exactly what they are waiting for.""If they wanted to attack, they would have already done it," Andre said. "Whoever is in that car has been sitting still for ten minutes. That is not how Hale's people operate, and it is not how Diane operates either. This is something else."Voss studied him for a moment, then nodded once, reluctant. "I will cover the door. If anything moves wrong, you run back inside immediately."Andre stepped out into the cold night air, keeping his pace slow, deliberate, his eyes fixed on the still, silent sedan parked at the far end of the street. The driver's door opened before he had crossed half the distance.Andre stopped walking entirely.Claire stepped out, wrapped in a plain dark coat entirely unlike the tailored elegance Andre remembered from their life together, her hair pulled back simply, her

  • Chapter 38: What the Key Remembers

The medic's clinic turned out to be a converted garage behind a shuttered auto parts store, its windows blacked out, its interior far cleaner and better equipped than anything about its exterior suggested. The man himself, lean and grey haired, with the unhurried movements of someone who had handled far worse under far more chaotic conditions, took one look at Margaret and immediately began issuing quiet, efficient instructions."Table. Now. Someone keep pressure on that shoulder until I say otherwise."Andre and Sara obeyed without question, laying Margaret carefully across the exam table while the medic worked with practiced speed, cutting away fabric, examining the wound with a small penlight, his expression giving away nothing."Through and through," he said finally. "Clean enough, considering. She is lucky, or whoever fired that shot was not actually trying to kill her.""Will she live?" Andre asked."If infection does not set in, and if she stops trying to talk before I finish s

  • Chapter 37: What She Tried to Say

"We cannot carry her through the open street," Sara said, pressing her jacket hard against Margaret's shoulder, the fabric already soaked dark. "Not like this.""Then we do not use the street," Andre said, scanning the square quickly. Sirens were already rising somewhere in the distance, faint but climbing steadily closer. "There has to be another way out of this park."Margaret's eyes fluttered, her breathing shallow but steady, her grip still surprisingly strong around Andre's wrist. "Service gate," she managed, her voice thin. "North side. Behind the maintenance shed."They half carried, half dragged her across the darkened grass, staying low behind hedges and benches, Andre's heart pounding with every second that passed without another shot ringing out. The shooter had not fired again since the third round drove them behind the tower's base, but Andre did not trust the silence, not with Preston Hale's patient, methodical style still fresh in his memory. They found the gate exactly

Sara stared at the message for a long moment before finally typing a single reply.Where.The response came almost instantly. The old clock tower on Meridian Street. Tonight, when the bells strike nine. Come alone, Sara. Bring the boy if you must, but no one else.Andre read the words over her shoulder, his chest tightening. "She knows about me.""She seems to know a great many things she should not," Sara said, her voice unsteady in a way Andre rarely heard from her. They reached the garage twenty minutes later, exactly as planned, Voss and Mara already waiting inside, tense and watchful."Well?" Voss asked, reading the alarm plainly written across both their faces.Sara explained quickly, the message, the location, the instruction to come without the others."That is a trap," Mara said immediately. "It has to be.""Perhaps," Sara said. "Or perhaps she genuinely does not trust anyone else enough to risk being seen." She looked at Andre. "Either way, we do not have many other paths fo

  • Chapter 35: Nobody Runs

"Nobody runs," Andre said quietly, gripping Voss's arm before he could react to the sight of the sedan easing down the street.Voss's jaw tightened. "That is Diane Sterling's car.""I know. Running is exactly what she is watching for." Andre kept his voice low, steady, forcing calm into every word even as his pulse hammered. "If we bolt, we confirm we are exactly who she is looking for. If we walk, we are simply four people on a sidewalk."Mara's eyes darted toward the approaching sedan, then back to Andre. "Then what do we do?""Split," Andre said. "Sara, you and I continue straight, unhurried, like we have somewhere ordinary to be. Voss, take Mara left at the corner." He glanced at Voss. "The garage still has that second exit through the fence you showed me. Nobody watching the front would ever see us leave again. We meet there in twenty minutes, longer route, staggered timing." He looked at each of them in turn. "Whatever happens, do not look at that car directly. Do not change you

  • Chapter 34: A Face From Before

They found Voss waiting at a payphone two blocks from the old repair garage, exactly where he had told them to regroup if anything went wrong at the estate."You look like you crawled out of a collapsed building," Voss said, studying the dust still clinging to Andre's jacket."Close enough," Andre said.He filled Voss in quickly, the estate, Agnes, Diane Sterling, the photograph, the four words written on its back. Voss listened without interrupting, his expression sharpening with every new detail, until Andre finally reached the part that mattered most."Sara thinks she knows who wrote that note," Andre said. "But she is refusing to say more until she is certain."Voss's eyes moved to Sara. "That is not like you.""Being wrong about this particular person has consequences I am not willing to repeat," Sara said evenly. "I need to confirm it properly first.""Then confirm it," Andre said. "Whatever caution you are carrying, we do not have the luxury of moving slowly right now. Diane al
