Trevor and Lyssa emerged into a clearing. On the other side, an asphalt road stretched into the unknown. Trevor's memories worked fast—his body knew which direction led to the main city: left.
He led Lyssa down the path under the sickly yellow sky. She munched on snacks he'd purchased from the system, oblivious to the weight of their situation.

Trevor kept walking, his gaze fixed on the crimson tab floating before him. His face twisted with disbelief. A rebate? For just taking care of Lyssa? But the other rewards are way too small.

It was just a small complaint, Trevor thought, forcing a smile as he swiped the tab. I'm going to put all 5 stat points into Perception. That's it.
He mentally navigated to his stats screen.

Hmm. His gaze lingered on the discrepancy between points spent and the rebate received. Fair enough.
He closed the tab and shifted his attention back to Lyssa. She was still eating calmly, unaware he'd been watching her. He recalled everything she'd revealed about the Authority and Vanguard Command. The implications were unsettling.
After several minutes of walking in silence, Lyssa finally spoke. "Do you have a plan now?"
Her question hung in the air as Trevor considered it. I barely even have one.

Trevor gritted his teeth. He wanted to snap back at the system, but Lyssa was here. He forced himself to calm down and turned his gaze toward her. They'd stopped walking without realizing it.
"I—"
The ground beneath them suddenly trembled.
Trevor pulled Lyssa into a nearby bush without hesitation. Two vans passed by on the road, their weight causing the asphalt to groan in protest. But they weren't alone.
Armed men in black tactical armor emerged from the treeline, the Vanguard Command insignia gleaming on their chests. They moved with military precision, sweeping the area systematically.
Trevor managed to keep Lyssa calm while they waited, but the soldiers showed no signs of leaving.
"Keep looking! Lyssa Kent couldn't have gone far." The voice was unmistakable—Vask. His authoritative tone cut through the air as he commanded his fleet of soldiers. In his hands, he held a device with a square glass screen that blinked green rapidly.
A tracker.
"They're after you," Trevor whispered to Lyssa. "Do you have any idea why?"
She was too terrified to speak. She could only shake her head with a soft, trembling motion.
They're using a tracker to find her, Trevor's mind raced. Which means the Vanguard Command won't leave until they've captured Lyssa. We can't outrun technology.
Armed soldiers passed by their bush, plasma cannons held at the ready. One wrong move and they'd be vaporized.
Trevor's eyes narrowed. System... access Vanguard Command strike team threat level.

55%, Trevor thought grimly. It means I can't fight my way out while protecting Lyssa. If I engage, I'll be forced to choose: protect myself or protect her. And if she gets captured...
He didn't finish the thought. The implications were too dark.
"Sir, we can't find her anywhere," one of the soldiers reported after an exhaustive search.
Vask's frustration was palpable. "Keep looking! The tracker says she's here somewhere." He scanned the surrounding area, his jaw clenching as over a hundred trained soldiers couldn't locate their target.
Trevor looked at Lyssa. She was shaking—genuine terror etched into every line of her face. Her breathing was shallow, rapid. He could see her pulse racing in her neck.
Then something shifted inside him.
A realization. A moment of clarity that changed everything.
"Lyssa," he called softly, his voice steady and calm.
She looked at him, confusion and fear warring in her eyes.
"I have a plan," he continued, meeting her gaze. "But I'm going to need you to trust me."
She locked eyes with him, wondering what he meant. Why was he asking her to trust him now, in this moment? "...Trevor," she whispered. "You've saved me three times now. I trust you, but what's your plan?"
Trevor didn't answer. Instead, he took her hands and pulled her up. Then he dragged her into the open.
The effect was immediate. Every weapon in the field turned toward them. The click of safeties disengaging echoed across the clearing. Plasma cannons charged with a high-pitched whine. Fifty gun barrels pointed directly at them.
Lyssa's blood ran cold. Her hand gripped Trevor's so hard her nails drew blood. Did he really just sell us out?
Vask's eyes widened. He raised his hand, signaling his men to hold fire. "Lyssa Kent," he called out, his voice dripping with satisfaction. "I was wondering when you'd show yourselves."
Trevor stood perfectly still, his hand never releasing Lyssa's. He could feel her trembling beside him. Could sense her mounting panic.
Could almost hear her internal screams of betrayal.
Then he spoke.
The words came out clear and unwavering, each one deliberate and measured:
"We surrender."
The moment hung suspended in time. Guns trained on them. Soldiers waiting for orders. Vask's triumphant smile widening as he laid out an order.
“Seize them!”

Morning, afternoon, night? It looked impossible to tell what it was. It was foggy outside and crawling with zombies. Atop the red zones, the highway linking to the Vanguard base was as clear as daylight. No single soul on the bridge, except a black cruiser. Steadily active with humming sound. Standing right behind were two Vanguard soldiersIt was eerily quiet but it was normal for then. But the fog, that wasn't normal. The fog had recently appeared and it crawled up the highway at an unmistakable speed within days of its appearance.Serenity lingered longer with her legs crossed, arguing for dominance with the humming sound from the Vanguard cruiser. Unfortunately, no side was winning the contest. While both concepts argued for dominance, the sound of another Vanguard cruiser blasted them both out of existence. Its engines roared so loud you could hear it from miles away. The moment the other two soldiers spotted it, they got into position—not an attacking position.Eventually, the c

Then his mind flipped and he remembered Lyssa. He turned and saw Vask still standing there and approached the electrified glass with caution.“Good to know you survived.” Vask said first. “I have never come across a mutant capable of surviving such a blast…”Trevor raised a brow. “What's that supposed to mean?”Vask heaved a sigh. He looked away from Trevor and then turned his back to him as his gaze wandered to oblivion. “Many mutants have been captured by my team, but due

The blast doors hissed shut with Trevor and Lyssa being shoved forward like common criminals.Trevor didn't say anything just yet, but Lyssa, she was drowning a pit of regret. Cursing herself for trusting a stranger. “Keep moving, freaks!” One of the guards barked, shoving Lyssa forward because she was slowing down. Trevor's eyes widened immediately as he sought to move towards Lyssa. “Hey! Be gentle with her!” The guard who had shoved Lyssa aside raised a brow. He examined Trevor with disgust and grabbed his collar immediately. “And who do you think you are to say a word?”The guard punched Trevor hard in the face, hard enough to send Trevor down in one clean swoop.Lyssa, who was already far ahead with the other guard, noticed the commotion behind her, her eyes withered with confusion as to why Trevor tried to defend her. “Move!” The guard with her shoved her again.
