Chapter 1: The Divorce at the Banquet

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel was bathed in shimmering gold light. Massive crystal chandeliers hung high above, casting a warm glow over hundreds of wealthy guests dressed in expensive tuxedos and designer evening gowns. Laughter, clinking champagne glasses, and classical violin music filled the air.

Tonight was the 70th birthday of old Mr. Vance, the patriarch of the Vance family.

At the center of the room stood Chloe Vance. She wore a stunning pastel silk dress that hugged her slender figure, her long hair styled in soft waves over her shoulders. Beside her stood Julian Sterling, the arrogant young heir of the Sterling Group. Julian wore a custom Italian suit, a gold Rolex gleaming on his wrist, and a smug, condescending smile plastered across his face.

I stood three feet away, holding a small silver tray with two fresh glasses of sparkling wine. I wore a plain black suit that had grown thin at the elbows from three years of constant washing.

For three long years, I had lived as the Vance family’s live-in son-in-law. For three years, I woke up at five every morning to sweep their floors, cook their meals, scrub their toilets, and wash their laundry. I swallowed every insult from Chloe’s vicious mother, Brenda, without ever speaking a word back.

Nobody in this room knew the truth.

My three years of servitude were not because I was a weak, penniless loser. They were part of a mandatory three-year trial of absolute humility—a ancient rule enforced by my family’s secret global syndicate. To inherit the title of Sovereign Lord and take control of eighty trillion dollars in liquid assets, I had to live as the lowest man on earth for exactly thirty-six months without revealing my true power to a single soul.

And today, at exactly six o'clock in the evening, my three-year trial was over.

"Ethan!" a shrill, sharp voice barked from behind me.

Brenda Vance stepped forward, dragging her heavy mink fur coat over her shoulders. She reached out and snatched a glass of wine off my tray, glaring at me with pure disgust.

"Look at you!" Brenda sneered, pointing her manicured fingernail directly at my nose. "Standing around like a useless statue while our guests are waiting! You've been married to my daughter for three years, and what have you brought to this family? Nothing! You live off our charity like a stray dog!"

A few nearby guests turned their heads, chuckling quietly behind their silk napkins.

"Is that Chloe Vance’s house-husband?" a wealthy woman whispered. "I heard he doesn't even have a bank account."

"He sweeps the yard and fixes their cars," another man snickered. "A total embarrassment."

I kept my face completely calm, keeping my hands at my side. "Mother, today is Grandfather's birthday. I came here to help."

"Don't call me mother, you penniless trash!" Brenda spat, taking a sip of her wine before making a face. "Julian brought my father a two-million-dollar jade dragon statue tonight! What did you bring? A handmade paper card? You make me want to vomit!"

Julian chuckled softly, stepping closer to Chloe and wrapping a casual arm around her waist. Chloe didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned slightly into Julian's shoulder, looking at me with cold, distant eyes.

"Brenda, please don't ruin your mood over a beggar," Julian said in a smooth, patronizing voice. He pulled a thick white folder from his inner suit jacket and handed it directly to Chloe. "Chloe, the paperwork is ready. The Sterling Group has already approved your company's ten-million-dollar loan. All you need to do now is clean up your personal life."

Chloe took the folder with trembling fingers. She looked up at me, her expression unreadable, flat, and devoid of any warmth.

"Ethan," Chloe said softly. Her voice lacked any emotion. "Let's end this."

She untied the string on the folder and pulled out a stapled stack of papers. Bold black letters across the top read: DIVORCE AGREEMENT.

The surrounding crowd went quiet. Everyone leaned in, eager to watch the drama unfold.

"Read it and sign it," Chloe said, pushing the papers and a heavy gold pen into my hands. "I've listed our terms. You walk away with fifty thousand dollars in cash as a settlement for your three years of housework. You will leave the Vance mansion tonight and never contact me or my mother again."

I looked down at the paper in my hands, then looked back up at her face.

"Chloe," I said, my voice quiet and steady. "Is this really what you want? I promised your grandfather three years ago that I would care for you. If you sign this today, there is no turning back."

Chloe let out a cold, bitter laugh. "Care for me? With what, Ethan? Your cheap words? Your dishwashing skills? Look at Julian! He solved my company's financial crisis in one phone call! He can give me status, luxury, and respect. What can you give me?"

"He can give you trash!" Brenda interjected loudly, stepping between us. "Sign the paper, Ethan! Stop wasting my daughter's youth! You're a leech, and tonight we are scraping you off our shoes!"

Julian smirked, tapping his gold watch. "Hurry up, Ethan. I have a reservation at a five-star restaurant with Chloe in an hour. Don't waste our time."

I looked into Chloe’s eyes one last time, searching for even a single flicker of hesitation, regret, or memory of the quiet nights we had shared.

There was nothing. Only greed and cold arrogance.

"Fine," I said smoothly.

I uncapped the gold pen. Without a single word of argument, without begging, and without a single tear, I signed my name in bold black ink across the bottom line of the divorce settlement: Ethan Rhys.

Chloe blinked, momentarily caught off guard by how fast I had signed. She had clearly expected me to cry, drop to my knees, or beg for another chance.

"Here," I said, handing the papers back to her.

I reached into my plain suit pocket and pulled out a tiny velvet box. I opened it, revealing a simple fifty-dollar silver wedding ring—the only ring I was allowed to wear during my trial of humility.

I took the ring out, spun it gently between my thumb and index finger, and dropped it straight into Chloe's half-empty glass of vintage champagne.

SPLASH.

The silver ring sank to the bottom of the crystal glass, bubbling quietly in the amber liquid.

"Consider the fifty-thousand-dollar settlement canceled," I said softly, looking straight into her eyes. "Keep it. You're going to need every penny."

Chloe’s brow furrowed in confusion. "What is that supposed to mean?"

"It means we are officially strangers," I replied.

I turned on my heel and began walking toward the grand double doors of the ballroom.

"Hey! Stop right there, you broke loser!" Julian shouted after me, his face flushing red with sudden anger. "How dare you speak to Chloe like that! You think you can just sign the papers and walk away with your head held high?! You're nothing but a dog thrown out into the street!"

Brenda cackled behind him. "Let him go, Julian! He's just trying to save face! By tomorrow, he'll be sleeping under a bridge, searching through trash cans for his next meal!"

I didn't stop. I didn't look back. I pushed open the heavy oak doors of the ballroom and stepped out into the spacious, marble-tiled lobby of the St. Regis Hotel.

The cool night air washed over my face through the open front archway. Outside, a torrential thunderstorm was raging over the city. Heavy rain poured down in sheets, lightning flashing across the dark clouds.

As I took three calm steps toward the glass sliding entrance of the hotel, the automatic doors hissed open.

SWOOSH!

The bright glare of intense halogen headlights suddenly pierced through the heavy rain outside.

A fleet of twelve jet-black, custom-armored Maybach limousines pulled onto the private driveway of the hotel, stopping in a perfect, rigid line. The glowing gold crest of a coiled dragon—the supreme symbol of the Sovereign Syndicate—gleamed brightly on the front hoods of every vehicle.

The passenger doors of all twelve limousines flew open simultaneously.

Thirty elite security operatives dressed in dark tactical suits and leather gloves stepped out into the pouring rain. They ignored the heavy downpour entirely, forming two crisp, perfectly aligned rows along the red carpet leading straight from the driveway up to the hotel entrance.

An elderly man stepped out from the lead vehicle. He wore an immaculate, dark blue velvet suit adorned with subtle gold military honors. In his right hand, he held an ebony walking stick topped with a solid silver dragon head.

It was Duke Vance—the supreme administrative chancellor of the Sovereign Syndicate and one of the most powerful financial titans in the entire world.

The elite guards snapped to attention, their boots clicking together in perfect unison.

Duke Vance walked up the marble steps, completely ignoring the rain soaking his shoulders. He stepped through the glass doors, stopped exactly three feet in front of me, and dropped his ebony walking stick.

In front of the stunned hotel staff and security guards, Duke Vance lowered his head and bowed ninety degrees flat from his waist.

"Young Master!" Duke Vance’s voice boomed through the quiet lobby, reverberating like thunder. "Your thirty-six-month trial of humility is complete! The Sovereign Syndicate's global authority, eighty trillion dollars in liquid assets, and absolute command over the world's financial networks are fully restored to you!"

He held up both hands above his head, presenting a sleek, jet-black card forged from ultra-rare space titanium. The golden dragon emblem on its surface glowed with a faint, deadly red light under the lobby lamps.

"Welcome back, Sovereign Lord!" Duke Vance shouted.

Behind him, all thirty tactical operatives lowered their heads and shouted in unison:

"WELCOME BACK, SOVEREIGN LORD!"

I reached out my hand and picked up the black titanium card. The cool metal felt familiar under my fingertips, humming with immense, dormant power.

My eyes went cold as ice as I looked out at the rainy skyline of the city.

"Duke Vance," I said softly.

"Your orders, Sire?!"

"The game is over," I commanded. "It's time to clean the house."
