The Undercity training grounds were silent.
I stood in the center of the cavern, my three beasts arranged before me. Scritch. Bruiser. Zephyr. They watched me with patient, trusting eyes.
I'd been hunting for weeks. Every spare moment, every ounce of energy, every drop of Essence I could scavenge from the Rifts. The progress bars had been climbing slowly, painfully, but they were finally there.
One hundred percent.
"Alright," I said, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "Let's see what you become."
I closed my eyes and reached for the bonds.
The Essence flowed out of me like water from a broken dam. I felt it drain from my core, channeling into three separate streams—one for each beast. The connection was electric, alive, pulsing with potential.
Scritch was first.
His body convulsed. His dark fur rippled, shifted, deepened to a black that seemed to swallow light. He grew—not much, but enough to notice. His muscles coiled beneath his skin like steel cables. His eyes, already intelligent, sharpened with a predatory gleam.
[Conduit Beast: Scritch has evolved!]
[Shade Stalker (D-Rank)]
[New Skills: Umbral Cloak, Mind Spike]
Scritch emerged from the transformation sleeker, deadlier. He moved like liquid shadow, his form blurring at the edges. When he looked at me, I felt a chill run down my spine.
Umbral Cloak. He could become nearly invisible in darkness.
Mind Spike. A psychic attack that could disorient—or devastate—an enemy's mind.
He was no longer just an assassin. He was a nightmare.
Bruiser was next.
The ground shook as his body expanded. His mangy fur thickened, hardened, transformed into something resembling stone plates. His muscles bulged. His jaw lengthened. His claws became iron-hard.
[Conduit Beast: Bruiser has evolved!]
[Stone-Hide Mastiff (D-Rank)]
[New Skills: Iron Hide, Tremor Stomp]
When the transformation finished, Bruiser was barely recognizable. He stood taller than me now, his shoulders broad, his body a living fortress. He let out a low growl that vibrated through the cavern floor.
Iron Hide. His skin could deflect blades and absorb impacts.
Tremor Stomp. A ground-shaking attack that could knock enemies off their feet.
He was no longer just a tank. He was an unstoppable force.
Zephyr was last.
The hawk spread its wings—and they caught fire. Not literally. But the feathers shimmered with an electric charge, crackling with barely contained lightning. Its eyes glowed a brilliant gold. Its talons sharpened to razor points.
[Conduit Beast: Zephyr has evolved!]
[Storm Falcon (E-Rank)]
[New Skills: Lightning Strike, Gale Shield]
Zephyr screeched, and the sound was thunder. It launched into the air, circling the cavern with effortless grace. When it dove, lightning trailed behind it.
Lightning Strike. A concentrated bolt of electricity channeled through its talons.
Gale Shield. A barrier of wind that could deflect projectiles.
It was no longer just a scout. It was a weapon.
I felt the new skill before the System even announced it.
[New Skill Acquired: Shared Perception]
It was like a door opening in my mind. Suddenly, I could see through all three of my beasts simultaneously—their perspectives overlapping with my own, creating a web of awareness that stretched in every direction.
Scritch's eyes saw the shadows. Bruiser's ears heard the faintest sounds. Zephyr's vision pierced the darkness.
I could coordinate them effortlessly. Command them with a thought. Feel their emotions as clearly as my own.
This is what it means to be a Conduit.
I smiled.
"Let's test this out."
The Pit was packed.
Word had spread about "The Beast Tamer"—the mysterious masked fighter with the impossible Talent. The crowd was larger than ever, hungry for blood and spectacle.
Silas greeted me with a grin. "Back for more, kid? I've got a special opponent for you tonight. Something that'll really test those beasts of yours."
"What is it?"
"A [Cave Wyrm]. C-Rank. Nasty piece of work. Killed three fighters last week."
I should have been scared. A C-Rank monster was far above anything I'd faced before.
Instead, I felt something else.
Excitement.
"I'll take it."
The Cave Wyrm was everything Silas promised.
It was massive—easily thirty feet long, with segmented armor plates and a mouth full of teeth that could crush steel. It moved with terrifying speed, its body coiling and striking like a serpent.
The crowd screamed. Half of them were cheering for me. The other half were betting on the Wyrm.
I stood at the edge of the arena, my three beasts arranged around me.
Let's go.
Zephyr launched into the air, circling above the Wyrm. Scritch vanished into the shadows. Bruiser charged.
The Wyrm lunged at Bruiser. He met it head-on.
[Iron Hide]
The Wyrm's teeth scraped against Bruiser's stone-hard skin, leaving deep gouges but not breaking through. Bruiser roared and slammed his massive paws into the ground.
[Tremor Stomp]
The arena shook. The Wyrm staggered, disoriented.
Scritch. Now.
Scritch emerged from the shadows behind the Wyrm. His jaws clamped down on the soft flesh between armor plates. His fangs sank deep.
[Mind Spike]
The Wyrm screamed—a horrible, psychic sound—as Scritch invaded its mind. It thrashed wildly, trying to shake him off.
Zephyr. Finish it.
Zephyr dove from the sky, lightning trailing behind it.
[Lightning Strike]
The bolt hit the Wyrm's exposed neck. The creature convulsed. Its screams turned to gurgles.
It collapsed.
Silence.
Then the crowd exploded
Silas paid me triple what I'd earned before.
"You're a goldmine, kid," he said, shaking his head. "A walking, talking goldmine. Where'd you learn to fight like that?"
"Trial and error," I said.
He laughed. "Well, whatever you're doing, keep doing it. You come back next week, I've got something even bigger for you."
I nodded and turned to leave.
But before I could disappear into the crowd, my communicator buzzed.
A message. Unknown sender.
I opened it.
"Impressive. But you're still weak. Come to the Spire District. Let's see how you fare against real power."
Signed: Marcus.
I stared at the message for a long time.
Marcus knew. He knew about the Pit. He knew about my beasts. He knew where I'd been hiding.
The question was—what did he want?
Was this a trap? A challenge? An olive branch?
I didn't know.
But I knew one thing for certain.
I wasn't going to run.
I looked at my beasts—Scritch, Bruiser, Zephyr—and felt the power coursing through our bonds.
"Looks like we've got an invitation," I said. "What do you say we crash the party?"
Scritch bared his teeth.
Bruiser growled.
Zephyr screeched.
I smiled.
"Let's go show Marcus what a real Conduit can do."

The Conspiracy Begins
Dr. Thorne's laboratory was hidden deep in the Undercity, beneath layers of stone and secrecy. It was a place of forbidden knowledge—monitors flickering with data streams, shelves lined with ancient texts, the air thick with the smell of ozone and old paper.I'd been here before, but never with something like this. The Beast Core pulsed in my pocket, warm against my thigh. It felt alive. Aware.Dr. Thorne was waiting for me at her desk, her sharp eyes scanning a holographic display. She looked up when I entered, her expression shifting from curiosity to concern."You found something."I pulled out the Beast Core and set it on her desk. She paled."This shouldn't exist," she whispered. "Not in a C-Rank monster.""What is it?"She didn't answer. Instead, she grabbed a scanner and ran it over the crystal. The device beeped wildly, numbers and symbols flashing across its screen."This isn't just a Beast Core," she said. "It's a System anomaly. Something that shouldn't be possible."She tu
The C-Rank Rift
The C-Rank Rift was a wound in the world. It hovered at the edge of the Commerce District, a tear in reality that shimmered with sickly purple light. The air around it was thick with Aether—so dense I could taste it, like copper on my tongue. Our team assembled at the Rift's edge. Five of us, including the leader—a veteran guild member named Kaelen with a B-rank [Earth Shatter] Talent. He'd been doing this for years. His armor was scarred, his eyes were hard, and his attitude was worse. He looked at me like I was something he'd scraped off his boot."New kid," he said. "Beast Conduit, right?""Yes.""Keep your pets close, rookie. We don't want them getting hurt."The other team members snickered. A woman with fire dancing between her fingers. A man with lightning crackling around his fists. A quiet girl with a bow that hummed with Aetheric energy. They all had real Talents. Combat Talents. The kind that made people respect you.I had beasts. And to them, that made me a joke.I didn't
The Guild Exam
The Guild Assessment Center was a monument to everything I'd never had.It stood in the Commerce District, a towering structure of glass and polished steel that caught the morning light and threw it back in the faces of everyone below. The Spire District gleamed in the distance, but this building was closer—a reminder that success was just within reach, if you were worthy.I wasn't supposed to be here. The application fee alone had cost me two weeks of Pit earnings. The written exam required knowledge I'd never been taught in the slums. The practical exam demanded power I wasn't supposed to have. But I was here anyway.I pulled up my hood and adjusted my mask. "The Beast Tamer" walked through the front doors of the Assessment Center like he belonged there. The lobby was chaos.Hundreds of candidates milled about, all of them young, all of them nervous, all of them clutching their application forms like lifelines. Holographic displays flickered overhead, showing rankings and statistics

The Third Bond
The rooftops of the Logistics District were my escape.Up here, above the smog and the factories and the endless gray of poverty, I could almost pretend I was somewhere else. Somewhere better. The air was still thick, but it was quieter. The stars were faint, but they were there—tiny pinpricks of light fighting through the pollution.I came here when I needed to think. When the weight of everything—Mira's illness, the Pit, the note, the war that was coming—became too heavy to carry.Tonight, I wasn't alone.Scritch was perched on my shoulder, his dark fur blending with the shadows. Bruiser was lying at my feet, his massive head resting on his paws. They were both watching the sky, as if they understood why I'd brought them here."Beautiful, isn't it?" I said softly. "Even with all the smog."Scritch chittered. Bruiser huffed.I laughed. "Yeah, I know. I'm getting sentimental."We sat there for a while, just breathing. Just existing. Then I heard the screech. It came from a nearby roof
The Rival's Shadow
The medicine cost forty credits.I handed over the coins—most of what I'd earned in the Pit—and pocketed the small vial. It would last Mira two weeks. Maybe three if we rationed carefully. Two weeks. That was how long I had to figure out how to save her life.I was turning away from the stall when the holographic display flickered to life overhead. A familiar face filled the screen.Marcus.He was standing in the middle of a C-rank Rift, his team flanking him. Lightning crackled around his hands—[Storm Striker] in action. A [Fang Bear] charged at him, massive and furious. Marcus didn't flinch. He raised his hand, and a bolt of lightning split the air.The bear dropped dead. The crowd around the food stall cheered. I didn't.The broadcast cut to an interview. Marcus was standing in front of the Apex Guild headquarters, his perfect hair barely ruffled, his perfect smile firmly in place. A reporter shoved a microphone in his face."Marcus Blackwood, you've become one of the youngest A-ra
