The alleyway echoed with the dying wails of the coven’s remnants, but Ren didn't wait to see if they were truly gone. He vaulted over a rusted fire escape, his boots hitting the pavement with a jarring thud that sent vibrations through his bruised frame.

"Twenty percent," he muttered, his breath hitching as he ducked into a labyrinth of shipping containers in the business district. "Great. I’m one-fifth of a monster and one hundred percent tired of being hunted."

"You seem a bit jumpy, little courier," a raspy voice wheezed from the shadows.

Ren spun around, claws already manifesting, his eyes scanning the gloom. "Who’s there? Show yourself, or I’ll start carving up the scenery until I find you."

A small, grimy man crawled out from behind a stack of crates, his clothes hanging in tatters. A young girl, no older than seven, clung to his leg, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror.

"Don't kill us, please," the man begged, his hands trembling violently. "We’re just hiding. The things with the glowing eyes... they’ve been dragging people away for hours."

Ren lowered his claws, though the violet glow beneath his skin pulsed with a restless energy. "Why are you still here? The whole district is a death trap. Get moving toward the upper sectors."

"We tried," the girl spoke up, her voice small and brittle. "But the soldiers blocked the bridge. They said anyone who crosses is an ‘unauthorized bio-hazard.’"

"Bio-hazard? Me?" Ren let out a humorless laugh. "I’m the bio-hazard? That’s rich. They’re the ones turning the streets into a slaughterhouse."

"What are you going to do?" the man asked, his gaze fixed on Ren’s changing features. "You aren't like the ones that took our friends, are you?"

"I’m the guy who’s just trying to survive until the sun comes up," Ren replied, his eyes softening despite the hunger gnawing at his gut. "How many of you are left in this pocket?"

"Just us," the man said. "The rest... they were taken by the crawling things. You know the ones. The ones that don't make a sound."

Ren cursed under his breath. "Listen, you need to stay low. I’m drawing them away. If I stay, they’ll find you. Do you understand?"

"Please, sir," the girl whispered, tugging on Ren’s sleeve. "My brother... they took him into the sub-level. You have to help him."

Ren looked at the dark opening of a service tunnel nearby. He could feel the system buzzing, a warning scrolling across his vision in sharp, aggressive red text.

[ System Alert: High-density threat detected in sub-level. Survival probability for host drops to 0.01% if engagement occurs. ]

"You’re killing me, kid," Ren sighed, wiping his brow. "Fine. Stay behind those containers. If you hear screaming, run. Don't look back."

"You’re really going to help?" the man asked, his voice thick with disbelief. "Why?"

"Because I’m a courier," Ren snapped, his voice rough. "And I don't leave packages behind. Even when the package is a kid who shouldn't be in this hellhole."

Ren slipped into the tunnel, his senses amplifying. He could smell the decay, the metallic tang of fear, and the sulfurous scent of the demon-spawn.

"Alright, you ugly freaks," he whispered to the darkness. "Come out and play."

A chittering sound answered him. From the ceiling, a dozen elongated, skeletal figures dropped, their limbs clicking against the concrete like needles.

"You look hungry," Ren sneered, his hands bursting into claws. "But you picked the wrong guy for dinner."

He lunged, his body a blur of shadow and kinetic force. He caught one mid-air, ripping it in half with a sickening squelch of dark fluid.

[ Essence Absorbed: +10. Evolution Progress: 21%. ]

"Is that all?" Ren laughed, dancing around a swipe from a second beast. "My grandmother hits harder than you, and she’s been dead for ten years!"

"Kill! Feed! Consume!" the demons hissed in a discordant chorus.

"I’m not on the menu today!" Ren shouted, parrying a clawed strike with his forearm. The metal of their blades screeched against his hardened hide.

He backpedaled, his eyes locking onto a massive, rusted valve connected to a cluster of gas mains along the wall. "Hey, you guys like fireworks?"

The demons shrieked and lunged in a wave. Ren didn't move until they were inches away. Then, he grabbed a loose structural pipe from the ground and hammered it into the gas valve with all his might.

Clang.

A hiss of pressurized gas filled the air.

"Run!" Ren yelled, though he wasn't talking to the demons. He shoved his claw into the leaking line, creating a spark that ignited the entire room.

"Oh, you are going to regret that!" Ren howled as he Shadow-Stepped backward, vanishing into the smoke just as the sub-level erupted.

The blast was blinding. It shook the foundations of the entire business district, throwing bodies and debris into the air. Ren hit the street above, rolling through the ash and dust, his clothes scorched, his skin glowing with the raw, residual heat of the demon-blood.

"Did... did we win?" the girl called out from behind the crates, coughing in the smog.

Ren stood up, his silhouette framed by the roaring fire behind him. "For now. Get out of here. Now!"

"Thank you," the man whispered, ushering the girl toward a side alley.

"Don't thank me," Ren muttered, turning back to the burning tunnel. "Just stay alive."

The silence that followed the explosion was short-lived. A rhythmic, heavy thudding sound approached from the main thoroughfare. High-powered spotlights cut through the smoke, pinning Ren to the spot.

"Target identified," a cold, amplified voice boomed.

Ren squinted into the glare. A squad of elite soldiers in matte-black tactical gear emerged, led by a man in a high-collared duster. Kael.

"Well, well," Kael drawled, his hand resting on his silver pistol. "I leave you alone for five minutes and you level an entire city block. You’re becoming a real nuisance, courier."

"And you’re becoming a real stalker," Ren shot back, his claws twitching. "Don't you have a hobby? Like knitting or something?"

Kael stepped into the light, his expression unreadable behind his tactical goggles. "I have a job. And tonight, it’s removing the cancer that is you from this city. You’re lucky. The Protector faction wants to see you for themselves."

"The Protector?" Ren growled, his golden eyes igniting. "You mean the guys who let this whole place rot?"

"They are the only thing keeping the walls from falling," Kael said, drawing his sword. The blade hummed with a light that seemed to drain the color from the air around them. "And you, Ren, are the final piece of their collection."

"I’m not anyone's collection," Ren whispered, his shadow rising up behind him like a tidal wave of ink.

"We’ll see about that," Kael replied, raising his blade. "Drop the facade. I know you’re burning up inside. Let’s see if you have anything left after I cut that pride out of you."

Ren stepped forward, the heat of the fire behind him fading into the cold, predatory focus of his demonic heritage. "Bring it on, Kael. Let’s see which of us leaves this street in a body bag."

As Kael charged, the ground beneath them began to rumble—not from the explosion, but from something much larger moving deep beneath the city.

"You have no idea what you’ve woken up," Kael warned, his voice barely audible over the screech of his blade.

"Good," Ren hissed, baring his teeth. "I was getting bored."

Ren vanished into the shadows, his speed hitting a level he hadn't yet achieved. Kael pivoted, his blade carving a burning arc through the darkness, but Ren was already gone.

"Where are you, boy?" Kael mocked, his eyes scanning the rooftops.

"Right behind you," Ren’s voice echoed, not from one direction, but from everywhere at once.

A sudden, sharp pain flared in Kael’s shoulder as a clawed hand raked across his back. Kael spun, firing his rail-pistol, but the bullet only hit the spot where Ren had stood a millisecond before.

"You're fast," Kael grunted, wiping his own blood from his coat. "But speed isn't enough to kill a Hunter."

"I'm not trying to kill a Hunter," Ren said, appearing at the far end of the street, his form flickering as his essence struggled to maintain his physical shell. "I'm trying to survive a conversation."

"There is no conversation left," Kael said, his posture shifting into a lethal, coiled strike. "Only the end of the line."

Ren felt his vision blur, the system chiming a warning that shook his brain. [ Evolution Progress: 25%. Warning: Overheating. Core meltdown imminent. ]

"Looks like I'm running out of time," Ren muttered, his breath coming in ragged, steaming gasps.

"Clock's ticking, kid," Kael said, moving in for the kill.

"Yeah," Ren whispered, his golden eyes glowing with a terrifying, final brilliance. "And I think I’ve got one hell of a surprise for you."

As the blade swung down, Ren lunged, his hand reaching out to grab the edge of the sword, the metal sizzling as it made contact with his burning skin. The entire street seemed to freeze as their eyes met, one man driven by cold duty, one creature driven by a hunger that transcended life itself.

A shadow moved across the moon, a massive, winged shape that blocked out the sky, and for the first time, Kael’s expression flickered with genuine, unadulterated fear.

"What... what is that?" Kael stammered, looking up.

"My ride," Ren said, a bloody, jagged grin splitting his face. "And I think it’s about time we took off."
