The night was too quiet.

Ethan stood in the center of the apartment he had been assigned.

The Base Core floated above his palm.

A metallic cube engraved with glowing runes.

It pulsed faintly.

Like it was alive.

Sophia and Emily stood near the doorway, watching nervously.

Ava was outside on patrol, ensuring no one approached.

Ethan exhaled slowly.

“System… what exactly are you?”

No answer came.

Only the cube responded.

Beginner Base Core Detected

Binding Host Identity…

A sudden surge of energy erupted.

The cube dissolved into light.

Then—

It sank into the floor.

The entire building shook.

“What’s happening?!” Emily gasped.

Ethan didn’t answer.

Because he could feel it.

The apartment… was changing.

A faint blue glow spread through the walls.

Like veins of light.

Then the System chimed.

Base Core Activated

Establishing First Safe Zone…

Naming Required

Name your territory.

Ethan paused.

A name.

Something that would define everything they built from here on.

Sophia stepped forward slightly.

“What is it asking?”

“Name the base,” Ethan said.

Emily swallowed.

“That sounds… serious.”

Ava’s voice came from the hallway.

“Whatever it is, decide quickly. Something is moving outside.”

Ethan’s eyes sharpened.

Of course.

Even now.

The apocalypse never waited.

He looked at the glowing system screen.

Then spoke.

“Haven.”

A moment passed.

Then—

Base Name Confirmed: HAVEN

The entire building lit up.

A deep vibration spread through the structure.

Outside, something changed.

The air itself felt heavier.

Like an invisible barrier had formed around the apartment complex.

Ava rushed inside.

Her expression was serious.

“What did you do?”

Ethan turned toward her.

“I think we just got a shield.”

As if responding, the System activated again.

BASE FUNCTION UNLOCKED

• Defensive Barrier: Level 1 • Detection Range: 500 meters • Safe Zone Status: ACTIVE

Emily gasped.

“So we’re… protected?”

“For now,” Ethan said.

Ava narrowed her eyes.

“That won’t last forever.”

Ethan nodded.

She was right.

Nothing in this world stayed safe for long.

Then another notification appeared.

Base Upgrade Path Unlocked

Expand territory to evolve HAVEN into:

• Outpost • Fortress • City • Kingdom

A faint smile appeared on Ethan’s face.

“Kingdom, huh…”

Ava noticed that expression immediately.

“You’re already thinking too far ahead.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Not far enough.”

A heavy silence followed.

Then—

A loud impact echoed from outside the barrier.

BOOM!

Everyone turned.

A zombie had slammed into the invisible shield.

Its body twisted unnaturally as it bounced back.

Then another hit the barrier.

Then ten more.

The street outside was filling up.

A wave of undead was approaching.

But none could cross the line.

For now.

Emily exhaled shakily.

“It actually works…”

Sophia looked relieved.

Ava, however, stayed tense.

“That’s not all,” she said quietly.

Ethan frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Ava pointed toward the street.

“Those things… they’re gathering.”

Ethan stepped forward.

Looked out through the shattered window.

And saw it.

Hundreds of zombies.

No.

More than hundreds.

They were clustering around the safe zone boundary.

Like they could sense something important inside.

Like they were being drawn here.

And then—

Ethan’s System flashed red.

WARNING

Unknown Entity Influence Detected

Safe Zone Attraction Effect: ACTIVE

Ethan’s expression darkened.

“So the base is a magnet…”

Ava nodded.

“Or a target.”

Outside, the zombies continued gathering.

And at the very back of the horde…

A figure stood still.

Not moving.

Watching.

Thinking.

Unlike the others.

It wasn’t mindless.

It was waiting.

And then—

It tilted its head.

Like it had just found something interesting inside Haven.

Ethan felt it immediately.

A cold pressure.

Like something had just locked onto him.

The System responded instantly.

NEW THREAT DETECTED

Unknown Intelligent Entity

Danger Level: ????

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“So there are more like that Hunter…”

Ava stepped beside him.

Her voice was low.

“We’re not safe.”

Ethan looked at the glowing barrier holding back the dead.

Then at the shadow in the distance.

And finally at the people behind him.

Sophia.

Emily.

Ava.

His growing “safe” zone.

He slowly clenched his fist.

“No,” he said.

“We’re not safe yet.”

Outside, the unknown entity smiled faintly in the dark.

And took a step forward.
