The shadow in the distance moved.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Unlike the other zombies, it didn’t stumble or twitch.

It walked.

Ethan’s eyes stayed locked on it through the shattered window.

“Do you see that?” he asked quietly.

Ava followed his gaze.

Her expression tightened immediately.

“…Yeah.”

Emily frowned. “See what?”

Sophia pointed toward the street.

“There. At the back.”

Emily squinted.

At first, she saw nothing unusual.

Just the massive crowd of zombies pressing against the invisible barrier.

Then she noticed it.

A gap.

A perfect, unnatural gap in the horde.

And inside it… something standing still.

Not rushing.

Not screaming.

Just watching.

Emily’s voice dropped.

“That one isn’t like the others…”

The System chimed instantly.

WARNING

Unknown Intelligent Entity Confirmed

Behavior Pattern: Observational

Threat Level: ????

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

Another unknown threat.

First the Hunter.

Now this.

And this one didn’t even attack yet.

That made it worse.

Ava reached for her knife.

“We should assume it’s hostile.”

Ethan nodded slightly.

“Agreed.”

Sophia swallowed. “But it hasn’t done anything…”

“That’s the problem,” Ava said flatly.

Outside, the zombies continued slamming into the barrier.

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

The shield held firm.

But the unknown entity still didn’t move.

Then—

It stepped forward.

Just one step.

And the entire zombie horde around it shifted.

Not attacking it.

Not colliding.

Parting.

Like the undead were subconsciously obeying its presence.

Emily’s face went pale.

“No way…”

Sophia whispered, “It’s controlling them…”

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

His System flickered again.

Base Barrier Resonance Detected

External Command Signal Interference: LOW

Source: Unknown Entity

Ethan’s eyes narrowed sharply.

“It’s testing us.”

Ava looked at him. “Testing?”

Ethan pointed at the entity.

“It’s probing the barrier. Measuring how strong it is.”

As if responding to his words…

The figure tilted its head again.

Then slowly raised one hand.

The zombies around it stopped moving.

Completely.

Silence fell across the entire street.

Even the growling faded.

Then—

The entity tapped the air.

TOCK.

A single sound.

And the barrier around Haven rippled.

Like water disturbed by a stone.

The entire apartment complex vibrated.

Emily grabbed the wall. “What was that?!”

Ava’s eyes widened slightly.

“…It touched the shield.”

Ethan’s expression darkened.

So it wasn’t just observing.

It was interacting with the system itself.

The entity lowered its hand.

Then… it smiled.

Not like the Hunter.

Worse.

Because this smile wasn’t wild or instinctive.

It was calm.

Calculated.

As if it had just confirmed something important.

The System flashed red again.

WARNING

Barrier Stability: 92%

External Pressure Increasing

Ethan felt a chill run down his spine.

“Whatever that thing is…”

“It understands what this base is.”

Ava’s grip tightened on her knife.

“That means it can break it.”

Silence fell inside the room.

For the first time since the base activated, the word safe felt like a lie.

Outside, the entity turned slightly.

As if it had finished its inspection.

Then—

It began walking away.

Not attacking.

Not rushing.

Just leaving.

The zombie horde followed immediately, flowing after it like a tide obeying a current.

Emily blinked. “It’s… leaving?”

Sophia looked confused. “Why would it just leave?”

Ethan didn’t relax.

Not even slightly.

Because the System hadn’t stopped warning.

Entity Behavior Update

Status: Retreated (Temporary)

Next Action Probability: HIGH

Ava noticed Ethan’s expression.

“You don’t think it’s over.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

He turned away from the window.

“That wasn’t an attack.”

Emily frowned. “Then what was it?”

Ethan’s voice lowered.

“A greeting.”

Ava’s eyes sharpened.

“You’re saying it knows you.”

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

But something about the way that entity had looked at the base…

Felt like recognition.

Like Haven wasn’t random.

Like it had been expected.

Inside the Base Core interface, another hidden line flickered briefly.

Then vanished.

UNKNOWN CONNECTION DETECTED…

Ethan didn’t see it.

But something had.

And somewhere in the dark city beyond Haven…

The entity stopped walking for a brief moment.

And smiled again.

This time… wider.
