Chapter 2: Eviction Notice

[START OF CHAPTER 2 MANUSCRIPT]

"Oh, you’ve gotta be kidding me," Daryx muttered, his eyes narrowing at the translucent blue HUD flickering in his vision. "Four? System, I bought a tenement, not a community center. Why is my basement a hotel?"

[Current Population: 1 (Owner). Detected Lifeforms: 4 (Unregistered). Total: 5.]

The service door rattled again, more violently this time. The wood groaned, and the deadbolt Sarah had mentioned looked like it was one good shove away from snapping.

"Open the door!" the voice from behind the wood barked. It was a man, sounding breathless and panicked. "There’s something coming up the back alley! It’s not just the shamblers, it’s… it’s something faster! Open the damn door!"

Sarah, still perched on the second-floor landing, gripped her kitchen knife so hard her knuckles were white. "Daryx, don't! You don't know who they are! They could be looters!"

Daryx looked up at her, then back at the door. "Looters usually don't ask for permission, Sarah. And they definitely don't sound that terrified." He stepped toward the security desk, his hand hovering near the 'Evict' icon, just in case. "System, give me a scan. Who's behind the door?"

[Scanning… Four human signatures detected. One wounded. One carrying high-frequency electronic equipment.]

Daryx’s eyebrows shot up. "Electronic equipment? In this neighborhood? That’s interesting." He looked at the door. "Hey! Whoever’s lead man, back away from the hinges. I’m opening it, but if I see a gun pointed at me, the last thing you'll feel is a very expensive tan."

"Just open it!" the man yelled.

Daryx reached out and flipped the latch. The door didn't just open; it was kicked wide by a man in a tactical vest that looked two sizes too big for him. He was young, maybe mid-twenties, with sharp eyes and a jagged scar running through his left eyebrow. Behind him, two others were dragging a third man whose leg was soaked in dark, heavy blood.

The leader stopped dead, his eyes darting from Daryx to the shimmering blue light dancing across the lobby walls. "What the… is that a hard-light barrier?"

"It’s private property," Daryx said, crossing his arms. "And you’re trespassing. Who are you?"

The man ignored the question, turning to help his companions pull the wounded man inside. "Get him to the wall! Tavrix, check the rear! Is that thing behind us?"

The scrawny one—Tavrix—slammed the door shut and leaned his back against it, panting. He was clutching a ruggedized tablet and a backpack bristling with antennas. "I don't know! The sensor went dark the second we crossed the threshold. It’s like the signal just… died."

"That would be the interference from the barrier," Daryx said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous tone. "I’m going to ask one more time. Who are you, and why shouldn't I throw you back out there to the 'something faster'?"

The leader looked up, finally noticing the way the air seemed to hum around Daryx. He saw the 'Owner' tag hovering invisibly to everyone but Daryx, yet he clearly sensed the shift in the room. "I’m Miller. Not that Miller you probably know. I’m—wait, names don't matter. I’m a scout. This is Tavrix, our tech. We were supposed to be extracting data from the precinct two blocks over when the world went to hell."

"A tech scout?" Daryx looked at Tavrix, who was staring at the glowing HUD icons with a mixture of awe and terror. "You look like you haven't seen sunlight in three years, kid."

"I work in the basement for a reason!" Tavrix snapped, his voice cracking. "And how are you doing that? That screen… it’s a localized System interface, isn't it? Only high-level Tier 0 admins are supposed to have access to those for the first forty-eight hours of the Collapse!"

Daryx smirked. "I’m a quick learner. System, initiate 'Owner’s Authority.' Target: The loud one with the tablet."

[Owner’s Authority (Level 1) activated. Cost: 50 Credits per minute. Effect: Gravity suppression and psychological pressure.]

Tavrix suddenly let out a strangled gasp. His knees buckled, and his tablet clattered to the floor. It felt like a ton of lead had been dropped onto his shoulders. He looked up at Daryx, his eyes wide with genuine primal fear.

"Stop… can't… breathe…" Tavrix wheezed.

"Daryx, stop it!" Sarah screamed from the landing. "He’s just a kid!"

Daryx didn't look at her. He kept his eyes on Tavrix. "This is my house. In my house, we don't bark, we don't demand, and we definitely don't talk about 'Admins' like we know what we're talking about. You want to stay? You want to not be 'vaporized' like the guy at my front gate?"

Tavrix nodded frantically, his face turning a worrying shade of purple.

"System, end authority," Daryx commanded.

The pressure vanished. Tavrix slumped forward, gasping for air, clutching his throat. The leader, the man in the vest, didn't move to help him. He was too busy staring at Daryx like he was looking at a ghost.

"You’re a Player," the leader whispered. "But the tutorial hasn't even finished yet. The first wave of zombies is still spawning."

"I skipped the tutorial," Daryx lied smoothly. "I went straight to the real estate market. Now, Tavrix, was it? Get up. I have a building with 42% structural integrity and a power grid that probably runs on hopes and dreams. You said you’re a tech? Prove it."

Tavrix scrambled to his feet, keeping a wide berth from Daryx. "I… I can look at the interface. If you have a System-integrated building, I can probably optimize the energy distribution. But I need a terminal. And I need to know why the air in here smells like a five-star hotel while the world outside smells like a barbecue pit in a graveyard."

Daryx tapped his HUD, scrolling through the property management menu. "That would be the 'Luxury Filtration' I just saw in the shop. System, what are the current upgrade options for the lobby and the exterior?"

[Available Upgrades for Blackwood Tenements:]

[1. Mk. 1 Auto-Turrets (Ballistic) - 5,000 Credits]

[2. Luxury Air & Water Filtration (Tier 1) - 2,000 Credits]

[3. Reinforced Steel Plating (Ground Floor) - 3,500 Credits]

[4. Automated Tenant Ledger - 500 Credits]

"Two thousand for air?" Daryx muttered. "Pricey. But if it keeps the smell of rotting neighbors out, it’s a bargain. System, purchase the Filtration and the Auto-Turrets. Place the turrets on the exterior gate and the second-floor balcony."

[Purchasing… 7,000 Credits deducted. Remaining Balance: 7,200 Credits.]

A series of mechanical whirs echoed through the building. Above them, Sarah shrieked as a panel in the ceiling slid open, and a sleek, matte-black turret lowered itself, its twin barrels swiveling with a predatory hum. Outside, the sounds of scratching at the gate were suddenly punctuated by a heavy thud-thud-thud of a high-caliber machine gun.

Then, silence.

[Pest Control active. 1.2 Credits earned.]

"What was that?" the leader asked, his hand going to the holster at his hip.

"That was my security deposit," Daryx said. He turned to the group. "Now, let's talk about rent. You four, plus the woman upstairs. This isn't a charity. This is a business. You’re currently in the 'Safe Zone' of the Blackwood Tenements. That safety costs 100 Credits a day, per person."

"A hundred credits?" the leader barked. "We don't have credits! We have scavenged supplies, some ammo, and a half-dead guy who needs a doctor!"

"The System converts assets," Daryx said, pointing to a small, glowing pedestal that had just materialized near the elevator. "Drop your valuables there. It’ll do the math. If you don't have enough, you work. Sarah knows the plumbing, she stays. You," he pointed to the leader, "you look like you can clear hallways. Tavrix, you’re the IT department. The wounded guy? He better have a very valuable watch."

"You’re a cold son of a bitch," the leader spat. "People are dying out there. The city is literally being eaten."

"And they aren't being eaten in here," Daryx countered, his voice flat. "That’s the service I provide. You don't like the rates? The door is right there. I’ll even turn off the turrets for ten seconds so you can get a head start."

The leader looked at his wounded friend, then at the terrifying efficiency of the turret on the balcony. He sighed, unbuckling his tactical vest and tossing it toward the pedestal. "Fine. We pay. But if we’re paying, we get rooms. Real rooms. With locks."

"Second floor is yours," Daryx said. "But stay away from the third. That’s my floor. And Tavrix? If I find out you’re trying to hack my System, I’ll have the turrets turn you into a colander."

Tavrix nodded quickly, his eyes glued to the floor. "I just want a socket that works, man. Just a socket."

"Go," Daryx waved them off. "Sarah! Show them where the 'budget' suites are. And make sure they don't bleed on the carpet. I just had it cleaned by the automated drones."

As the group shuffled toward the stairs, Daryx leaned back against the security desk. His heart was still racing, the 'Cold Heart' bonus the only thing keeping his hands from shaking. He had just spent half his fortune on a building that was still essentially a ruin, and he was now responsible for a group of people who probably wanted to kill him in his sleep.

"Slumlord," he whispered to himself. "Yeah. It fits."

Suddenly, the building groaned. Not a mechanical groan, but a deep, vibrating shudder that shook the very foundations.

"System, status report!" Daryx shouted.

[Integrity Alert: Kinetic impact detected at Gate Alpha. Velocity: 70mph. Mass: 3.5 Tons.]

BOOM.

The sound of twisting metal and shattering glass echoed from the street. Daryx ran to the front window, wiping away a layer of grime.

Outside, a massive, blacked-out armored SUV had smashed through the chain-link fence, its front bumper crumpled against the blue shimmer of the barrier. The barrier was flickering wildly, sparks showering the hood of the vehicle.

"The turrets!" Daryx yelled. "System, why aren't they firing?"

[Targeting Error: Entity identified as 'Human - Non-Hostile Intent (Emergency Status)'. Manual override required.]

The doors of the SUV kicked open. Three men in high-end private security uniforms scrambled out, dragging a woman in a business suit between them. She was clutching a briefcase to her chest like it was a holy relic.

"Open the gate!" one of the guards screamed, firing a handgun over his shoulder at a mass of shadows moving toward them from the ruins of a nearby diner. "We have the Priority Asset! Open the gate or we’re all dead!"

Daryx looked at the woman with the briefcase, then at the swarm of monsters closing in on the SUV.

"Priority Asset?" Daryx’s eyes gleamed as he saw the golden glow emanating from the woman’s briefcase on his HUD. "System… scan that briefcase."

[Scanning… Warning: Item detected is a 'Legendary Grade Property Deed: The City Power Station'.]

Daryx felt a slow, predatory grin spread across his face.

"Well," he whispered, "I think my next tenant just arrived. And she looks like she can afford the penthouse."
