In a world drowning in blood and undeath, Daryx Valtaren isn't looking for a cure—he's looking for real estate. Armed with a 'Property System' that grants him absolute sovereignty over any land he purchases, Daryx begins buying up 'dead zones' for pennies. While others beg for scraps, he builds a fortress of luxury. But his isolation is shattered when Mirelka Sorevia arrives at his gates, carrying a child that shouldn't exist—a baby that is the first of a new, supernatural species. Now, Daryx must protect his borders not just from the undead, but from every remaining power on Earth seeking the child.

The Dead Zone Discount

Chapter 1: The Dead Zone Discount

The air smelled like burnt rubber and iron. Screams, sharp and jagged, tore through the morning silence of the suburbs. Daryx Valtaren stood on his porch, his thumb hovering in mid-air, twitching against a translucent blue screen that only he could see.

"System, refresh the map," Daryx muttered, his voice surprisingly steady despite the carnage unfolding three houses down.

[Refreshing local area... 14 available properties found.]

"Still too many," he whispered. "Filter by 'Condemned' and 'Maximum Defensive Potential.' And hurry it up before that thing finishes with the mailman."

[Filtering... One match found: The Blackwood Tenements. Distance: 1.2 miles. Price: 10,000 Credits.]

"Hey! Daryx! What are you doing, man?"

Daryx didn’t look up. He knew that voice. It was Miller, the guy from across the street who spent more time grooming his lawn than talking to his kids.

"Miller, get inside," Daryx said, his eyes scanning the price tag on the floating HUD. "Lock your doors. Use the deadbolt, not just the handle."

"Get inside? Did you see that guy? He just... he bit Mrs. Higgins! He’s still chewing, Daryx! We need to go, now! I’ve got the SUV packed. Come on, help me move the dresser onto the roof rack!"

Daryx finally looked at him. Miller was shaking, his face a pale shade of grey. "I’m not helping you with a dresser, Miller. That SUV is a coffin on wheels. The roads are going to be a parking lot in twenty minutes."

"What are you talking about? We have to get out of the city!" Miller screamed, stepping onto Daryx’s lawn. "Why are you just staring at nothing? Are you in shock? Look at me!"

"I’m looking at a better option," Daryx said, tapping a floating icon. "System, I’m short on credits. What’s the conversion rate for my current liquid assets?"

[Current bank balance: $142,000. Conversion rate: $10 per 1 Credit. Total available: 14,200 Credits. Proceed with conversion?]

"Do it. All of it," Daryx commanded.

"Who are you talking to?" Miller grabbed Daryx’s shoulder, shaking him. "Daryx, snap out of it! The world is ending!"

Daryx shrugged his hand off. "The world isn't ending, Miller. It’s just changing owners. Now, get out of my way. I’ve got a closing meeting."

"You’re insane," Miller hissed, backing away. "You’re actually losing your mind. Fine! Die here! I’m taking my family and leaving!"

"Good luck with the traffic," Daryx called out, already walking toward his beat-up sedan. "And Miller? If you see a guy with a missing jaw, don't try to perform CPR. It doesn't work."

He ignored Miller’s string of curses, hopped into his car, and slammed the door. The HUD rerouted his GPS, a neon gold line cutting through the streets on his windshield.

"System," Daryx said as he cranked the engine. "Confirm purchase of The Blackwood Tenements."

[Warning: The Blackwood Tenements are located in a high-crime district and have been marked for demolition. Structural integrity is at 42%. Are you sure?]

"That’s why it’s cheap," Daryx muttered, swerving to avoid a stray shopping cart. "It’s built like a fortress, it’s got a private well from the sixties, and nobody in their right mind would try to loot a place that already looks like it’s been through a war. Confirm the damn purchase."

[Transaction complete. Deed registered to: Daryx Valtaren. You are now a Tier 1 Slumlord. Title bonus: 'Cold Heart' (Stress resistance increased by 15%).]

"Slumlord? Really? You couldn't give me 'Governor' or something?"

[Property status: Unsecured. Please reach the perimeter to activate the first-stage barrier.]

The drive was a descent into madness. Every block he traveled further from the suburbs brought more smoke, more blood, and more chaos. People were running in every direction, clutching bags, kids, or nothing at all. Daryx kept his foot heavy on the gas, his eyes locked on the gold line.

As he turned onto 5th Street, the massive, soot-stained silhouette of the Blackwood Tenements loomed ahead. It was an eight-story monstrosity of brick and rusted iron, surrounded by a chain-link fence topped with razor wire. It looked miserable. To Daryx, it looked like a sanctuary.

A group of three teenagers was trying to pry the plywood off one of the ground-floor windows. One of them held a crowbar, looking frantically over his shoulder.

"Hey! This place is private property!" Daryx leaned out the window and yelled as he skidded to a halt in front of the main gate.

The kid with the crowbar laughed, though it sounded shaky. "Private property? Look around, pops! The cops are dead! This is our spot now!"

"Yeah? You got a deed?" Daryx hopped out of the car, slamming the door.

"I got a crowbar! Get lost before we take your car too!"

Daryx checked the HUD.

[Distance to perimeter: 5 feet. Activate Barrier?]

"Activate," Daryx said.

"Activate what? What are you—"

A low hum, like a swarm of bees, suddenly vibrated through the pavement. A shimmering, translucent wall of blue light shot up from the fence line, passing right through the teenagers' feet. They shrieked, jumping back as the air around the building began to warp and shimmer.

"What the hell was that?" the kid yelled, his eyes wide. "What did you do?"

"I closed on the house," Daryx said, walking calmly toward the gate. The blue light parted for him like water, then snapped shut behind him. "And you’re trespassing."

"Let us in, man! Please!" the girl in the group begged, pointing down the street. "Those things... they’re coming! There’s hundreds of them!"

Daryx looked down the block. A mob of shambling figures was rounding the corner, their movements jerky and unnatural. The moans reached them a second later—a low, guttural drone that made the hair on Daryx’s neck stand up.

"Can't do it," Daryx said, grabbing the heavy iron handle of the tenement’s front door. "Insurance doesn't cover guests."

"You selfish prick!" the kid with the crowbar screamed, hammering on the blue barrier. His tool bounced off the light with a spray of sparks. "Let us in! You can't just leave us out here!"

"Actually, I can," Daryx said, his voice flat. "I spent every cent I have on this dump. Find your own luck."

He stepped inside and slammed the heavy oak door, throwing the deadbolt. The interior of the lobby was dim, smelling of dust and stale cigarettes.

[Sanctum established. Property: Blackwood Tenements. Current population: 1 (Owner).]

"Finally," Daryx sighed, leaning his head against the door. "System, status report on the barrier."

[Barrier at 100%. Energy consumption: 10 Credits per hour. Warning: Hostile entity detected at the threshold.]

A heavy thud shook the door behind him. Then another. A wet, tearing sound echoed from the other side, followed by a sizzle that sounded like bacon on a grill.

"What was that sizzle?" Daryx asked.

[A hostile entity attempted to breach the barrier. Vaporization complete. 0.1 Credits earned for 'Pest Control'.]

Daryx let out a dry, jagged laugh. "Vaporized. That’s... that’s a good feature. I like that feature."

He turned away from the door, his eyes adjusting to the dark. The lobby was a mess. Half-empty crates were stacked in the corner, and the elevator doors were dented as if someone had tried to kick them down.

"Okay," Daryx said, rubbing his hands together. "First things first. I need a room with a view. System, show me the floor plans. Which unit is the most secure?"

[Calculating... The penthouse unit is the most isolated, but the third floor has reinforced floor joists and—]

Thud. Thud. Thud.

Daryx froze. The sound hadn't come from the front door. It had come from upstairs.

"System," he whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. "You said the population was one."

[Correction: Current population: 1 (Owner). Detected Lifeforms: 1 (Unregistered).]

"Unregistered? What does that mean?"

"Is... is someone there?"

The voice was small, muffled by the ceiling above. It sounded like a woman, and she sounded terrified.

"Who’s that?" Daryx shouted, stepping toward the center of the lobby. "I bought this building! It was listed as condemned and vacant!"

"Please don't hurt me!" the voice cried out. A door creaked open somewhere on the second-floor landing, which overlooked the lobby. A woman with messy blonde hair and a face smudged with soot peered over the railing. She was clutching a heavy kitchen knife. "I’ve lived here for three years! They didn't tell me I had to leave!"

Daryx stared at her, then back at his HUD.

"System," he growled. "Why didn't you tell me there was a squatter?"

[Squatter status detected. Would you like to initiate 'Eviction Protocol'?]

Daryx looked at the woman. She was trembling so hard the knife was rattling against the wooden railing. Outside, the sounds of the dead scratching at his barrier grew louder.

"What does 'Eviction Protocol' do?" Daryx asked.

[The barrier will briefly invert, forcibly ejecting the unregistered lifeform into the exterior zone.]

Daryx looked at the woman, then at the front door where a zombie had just been turned into a cloud of ash.

"Wait," the woman sobbed. "I heard what you said to those kids outside. You’re the owner? You... you have power? The lights... they flickered blue when you came in."

"I own the place, yeah," Daryx said, crossing his arms. "But I didn't pay for a roommate."

"I can pay! I have money! Or I can clean, or... I know where the breaker box is!" she yelled desperately. "Please! Don't throw me out there! I saw what happened to the mailman!"

Daryx stayed silent for a long moment, watching the blue light of his HUD reflect in her tear-filled eyes.

"You know where the breaker box is?" he asked.

"Yes! And the plumbing! This building is a nightmare, you’ll never figure it out on your own!"

Daryx looked at the 'Evict' button hovering in his vision. Then he looked at the 'Register Tenant' button next to it.

"System," Daryx said, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face. "Hold the eviction. Let's see her lease agreement first."

Knock. Knock. Knock.

The sound didn't come from the woman. It came from a small, service door behind the security desk—a door Daryx hadn't noticed.

"Uh, Daryx?" the woman whispered, pointing a shaking finger at the small door. "That’s the basement entrance. And I locked that from the other side."

The door rattled on its hinges.

"Hey!" a muffled, gravelly voice barked from behind the basement door. "Whoever’s out there, open up! We’ve got a wounded guy down here and the back alley is crawling with those freaks!"

Daryx stared at the door. "We? How many people are in my basement?"

[Population count updating...]

"Oh, you’ve gotta be kidding me," Daryx muttered.
