Chapter 5: Desperate Counter

I watched the glowing axe blade cut through the air toward the cracked wall of my shelter. Time seemed to slow down. My heart pounded so hard I could hear it in my ears. Jaxor’s face showed nothing but confidence. He believed this one strike would finish me and take my safe zone. The red energy around his axe lit up the broken street like fire.

The emergency quest message still glowed in bright gold on my screen.

[Desperate Defense active. Survive the next attack and counter successfully. Reward: Rare Architect Blueprint – Basic Turret Tower. Bonus: Hidden potential unlock.]

I had no more resources and almost no time. But the system had given me this chance, so I had to use it. I gripped the metal pipe tighter and crouched low behind the bent door. When the axe hit, I would dodge to the side and strike back as hard as I could. It was risky, but staying still meant certain death.

Jaxor roared and brought the axe down with all his strength.

The blade slammed into the damaged wall. Metal screamed and bent inward. Sparks flew everywhere. The whole shelter shook violently, and pieces of the truck frame broke off and fell around me. Durability dropped straight to 12 percent. One more solid hit and the safe zone would collapse completely.

But I was ready. As the axe blade buried itself deep in the metal, I rolled to the left through the narrow gap. The pipe came up fast and I swung it with everything I had left. It connected hard with the side of Jaxor’s head. The impact made a dull crack sound. He stumbled back a step, blood running from a cut above his eye.

“You little rat!” he shouted, pulling the axe free.

His regeneration kicked in quickly, closing the cut, but I had bought myself a few seconds. I used them to activate the creative building mode again. With nothing but scraps left around me, I focused on the broken pieces of the wall that had fallen. The system guided my hands. I shaped the metal and concrete into a rough spike that stuck out from the front like a spear.

Jaxor charged again, swinging wildly now because he was angry. His axe missed me by inches as I ducked low. I shoved the improvised spike forward. It caught him in the stomach and pushed deep. He grunted in pain and staggered backward. Blood poured from the wound. His regeneration worked slower this time, like the damage was too much too fast.

The system voice spoke clearly.

[Counter attack successful. Desperate Defense quest completed.]

A rush of energy filled my body. The screen flashed with new information.

[Level up! Host now Level 3.

Strength +3, Agility +3, Endurance +4.

Rare Blueprint unlocked: Basic Turret Tower.

Bonus hidden potential: Resource Sense – You can now detect nearby raw materials within 100 meters.]

I felt stronger and sharper. The tiredness in my arms faded a little, and my mind cleared. The turret tower blueprint appeared in my list. It needed 40 wood, 25 metal, and 8 energy cores, but I had almost none left. Still, just knowing it was there gave me hope.

Jaxor wiped blood from his mouth and glared at me with pure hatred.

“You got lucky once. It will not happen again.”

He raised the axe for another swing, but this time I noticed something different. His movements looked a bit slower, and the red glow around the blade was not as bright. The spikes and my counter had worn him down more than he wanted to admit. That was my opening.

I focused on the new Resource Sense ability. A faint blue overlay appeared over the street. I saw glowing spots where broken cars, rubble, and even pieces from nearby buildings could be turned into materials. There was a small cluster about twenty meters behind my shelter. If I could reach it, I might get enough to build the turret.

But Jaxor stood between me and that spot. The monsters around him were still attacking the sides of the shelter. The walls shook with every hit. Durability sat at a dangerous 8 percent.

I made a quick decision. Instead of staying inside, I kicked the bent door open and ran out. The fresh air hit my face as I dashed toward the side barricade I had built earlier. Jaxor turned to follow me, swinging his axe in wide arcs. One swing clipped my shoulder and sent pain shooting through my arm, but I kept running.

“Get back here!” he yelled.

I reached the barricade and used it as cover while I activated Resource Sense again. Scrap metal and wood from an old shop front started pulling toward me. I gathered as much as I could in those few seconds. The system converted them fast.

[Materials gained: 18 wood, 22 metal, 4 energy cores.]

It was not enough for the full turret, but it was close. I ran back toward the shelter while dodging another axe swing. Jaxor was right behind me now, breathing heavy.

I slammed my hand on the side of the shelter and poured everything I had into the new blueprint.

[Building Basic Turret Tower. Cost: 40 wood, 25 metal, 8 energy cores. Remaining materials insufficient. Use emergency conversion?]

I chose yes without thinking twice. The system took the armored hide and some of my own stamina to fill the gap. The top of the shelter began to change. Metal twisted upward and formed a small tower with a rotating head. A basic energy cannon appeared at the top, glowing with faint blue light.

The turret turned toward Jaxor and fired a quick shot. The blue beam hit him in the chest and knocked him backward several steps. He roared in pain as smoke rose from the burn mark on his shirt. His regeneration tried to heal it, but the turret fired again, keeping him off balance.

I climbed back into the watchtower and shouted down at him.

“This is my zone. I built it to protect what matters. You only know how to take. That is why you will lose today.”

Jaxor looked up at me, his face twisted with rage. Blood ran from his mouth now, and the glow on his axe had grown weak.

“You think one toy tower changes anything? I have killed architects stronger than you.”

He raised the axe one last time and charged straight at the shelter. The turret fired twice more, hitting him in the leg and shoulder. He stumbled but kept coming. The front wall was almost gone. One more push and he would break through completely.

My heart raced as I prepared for the final clash. The turret was my best weapon now, but its energy was running low after those shots. Jaxor was hurt and slower, but he was still dangerous. This fight had become the perfect example of my core struggle in this new world. I wanted to build a safe place for my family and others who needed it. People like Jaxor wanted to destroy everything and rule through fear.

The axe came down again, aimed at the last standing part of the front wall. The turret turned to fire, but I knew it might not be enough.

In that exact moment, the system gave a new alert.

[Safe zone durability at 5 percent. Turret energy at 22 percent. Incoming support signal detected from another survivor 400 meters away. Unknown intent.]

I looked toward the distance and saw a figure moving quickly through the ruined street, heading straight for us. I could not tell if this new person was friend or another enemy ready to join the fight.

Jaxor noticed the movement too and laughed through the pain.

“Looks like more rats are coming to die with you.”

The axe blade was inches away from ending my shelter for good. I had to decide fast. Trust the turret and my own strength, or hope the approaching survivor would change the outcome.

Everything hung on the next few seconds.

Elara floated above them all, small hands raised. She wasn’t attacking directly — instead, she was rewriting sections of the code wall, turning the enemy’s own weapon against them. Golden blood soaked through the fabric almost as fast as she could replace it. Elara floated beside them, small hands glowing as she tried to help seal the injury with her power. Lira sat a few feet away, hugging her knees, the tiny golden hammer still clutched in one hand. Her eyes kept darting to the bunker entrance like she expected the marked humans to return any second. Zarek’s breathing was steady, but his golden eyes were distant. The mark had gone quiet again after the fight. Too quiet. Mira finished tying the makeshift bandage and sat back on her heels. She studied Zarek’s face — the golden veins, the solid gold eyes, the exhaustion underneath it all. “You almost lost it,” she said quietly. Zarek didn’t deny it. “I saw it,” he admitted. “Joining them. Building with them. You and the girls… rewritten. Safe. Perfect. For
