Xavier let out a satisfied smile as he stepped out of the restaurant, the signed agreement safely tucked inside the document case in his hand while the afternoon sun bathed the city in a warm golden glow.

The streets remained as lively as ever. Office workers hurried along the sidewalks with takeaway coffees in their hands, vehicles flowed steadily through the busy intersections, and the laughter of children echoed from a nearby park.

Just as he finished writing another note, his phone suddenly rang.

The caller ID displayed a familiar name.

Kate Wilson, looking at the name, a faint softness appeared in Xavier's otherwise calm eyes.

Kate had worked as his personal assistant for nearly three years.

She was capable, hardworking, and one of the very few people in Horizon Technologies who had remained genuinely loyal to him.

In his previous life, after the apocalypse broke out, she had stayed by his side without hesitation.

She never complained or betrayed him.

She simply carried out every task he entrusted to her.

On the very first day of the apocalypse, Selene had ordered Kate to drive George across the city. She managed to get him to safety, but it cost her own life.

Xavier's expression remained calm. "What exactly happened?"

"I arrived at the company this morning like I always do." Kate tried to steady her breathing, but the frustration in her voice was impossible to hide. "Before I could even enter the building, security stopped me. They said I was dismissed effective immediately and wasn't allowed back inside."

She forced out a bitter laugh.

"They also told me... you've been suspended indefinitely."

Not a single trace of surprise appeared on Xavier's face, he had expected Selene to retaliate after yesterday's confrontation.

What surprised him was how quickly she had acted.

Suspending him wasn't difficult.

Until the next shareholders' meeting officially recognized the transfer of his shares, Selene still possessed enough authority as acting CEO to remove him from his duties temporarily.

As for firing Kate, it had nothing to do with business. It was a warning, and that warning was directed at him.

"Where are you now?" Xavier questioned calmly.

"I'm still standing outside the company." Kate hesitated briefly before continuing in a quieter voice. "I kept thinking there must've been some mistake... so I didn't leave."

"There wasn't."

Those two words were enough to make her fall silent.

Xavier closed the notebook on the table before picking up his car keys.

"Stay where you are."

"Boss..." Kate spoke anxiously. "You don't need to come. Since they've suspended you too, I don't want you getting into more trouble because of me."

"This has nothing to do with you." His voice remained calm, but it carried a firmness that left no room for argument. "I'll be there in twenty minutes."

Before Kate could respond, Xavier ended the call, picked up his keys, and strode toward the apartment door.

No matter what Selene intended to do… He wouldn't allow Kate to face it alone. “This time, I won't let anyone use you as a sacrifice.”
