Mysterious Woman

Chapter 1

Ryan Mitchell walked out of Westfield General Hospital with a folder pressed against his chest and a hollow ringing in his ears. Two paternity tests. Two daughters. Neither one of them his.

Ten years. He had given Jessica Palmer ten years of his life, and the whole thing had been built on a lie.

His feet carried him down the block without direction, past the parking lot where his car sat waiting, past the bus stop where a woman glanced at him with mild concern. He did not stop. He could not stop. If he stopped, he would have to think, and if he thought too hard about what those lab results actually meant, he was afraid of what he might do.

He ended up at a bar called The Foxhole, three streets from the hospital. The music was loud and the lights were low and nobody inside cared who he was or what kind of day he was having. That was exactly what he needed.

He dropped onto a stool, slapped a hundred dollar bill on the counter, and pointed at the top shelf whiskey.

"Leave the bottle," he muttered.

The bartender raised an eyebrow but complied.

By his fourth glass, the edges of the world had gone soft. A woman with red lipstick slid onto the stool beside him.

"You look like you could use some company, handsome."

Ryan did not even glance at her. "I look like a man who wants to be left alone."

"Oh come on." She leaned closer, her perfume thick enough to taste. "A guy like you shouldn't be drinking alone."

Another woman appeared on his other side, taller, with sharp eyes. "Back off, Dana. I saw him first."

"You didn't see anything. I was here before you even walked in."

"Both of you need to step away." A third voice cut in from behind. "He's clearly not interested."

What happened next was a blur of shoving, shouting, and a glass shattering against the floor. Ryan barely registered the chaos erupting around him. Three women arguing, then four, voices overlapping and rising until the bartender slammed his palm on the counter and yelled for everyone to calm down.

Then everything went quiet.

A woman walked through the front door like she owned the building. She was dressed in a long black coat, her dark hair falling past her shoulders, and she moved with the kind of calm that made people instinctively step aside. Without saying a word, she reached into her coat, pulled out a check, and dropped it on the floor between the arguing women.

One hundred thousand dollars.

The room went dead silent.

She walked past them, slipped her arm around Ryan's waist, and lifted him off the stool with surprising strength.

"Hey, wait a minute," the red lipstick woman started, but one look from the stranger shut her mouth.

Ryan stumbled against the woman's shoulder, barely conscious of what was happening. She guided him through the front door, across the sidewalk, and into the back seat of a black sedan.

He grabbed her sleeve as she leaned him back against the leather seat. His eyes were glassy and his voice came out raw and broken.

"Jessica... why would you do this to me?"

The woman said nothing.

"Ten years." His voice cracked. "I gave you everything. Every single thing I had. And you let me raise someone else's kids."

Tears ran down his face. He did not bother wiping them.

"I'm going to ruin your family. You hear me? I'm going to drag your father's name through the dirt. And whoever he is... whoever touched you... I'll kill him. I swear to God, I'll kill him."

The woman behind the wheel stayed completely silent. She did not correct him. She did not tell him she was not Jessica. She simply drove, her eyes fixed on the road ahead, her expression impossible to read.

Ryan kept talking, his words slurring together, his anger mixing with grief until neither one made sense anymore. He cursed the Palmer family. He cursed himself for being blind. He cursed the years he had wasted trying to be a perfect husband to a woman who never deserved it.

Eventually, his voice gave out and his head dropped against the window.

The car pulled into an underground parking garage beneath a high rise building. The woman stepped out, opened his door, and pulled him upright. He could barely stand. She wrapped his arm around her shoulders and half carried him into an elevator, then down a hallway, and through the front door of a luxury apartment.

She lowered him onto the bed and removed his shoes. Then his jacket. Then the rest. He mumbled something incoherent about Jessica and rolled onto his side, and the woman brought a warm towel from the bathroom and carefully wiped his face, his neck, his arms.

Ryan's eyes fluttered open once, catching a glimpse of her face in the dim light of the bedside lamp. She was beautiful in a quiet, understated way, nothing like the loud women at the bar. Her expression was calm, almost sad, as if she understood something about heartbreak that most people never would.

Then his eyes closed again, and the world disappeared.

When morning came, warm sunlight poured through the floor to ceiling windows and fell across the white sheets like liquid gold. Ryan opened his eyes slowly. His mouth was dry. His head was pounding. His left arm ached from being pinned at an awkward angle all night.

Out of habit, he reached to his right, expecting to feel Jessica's familiar warmth beside him. His hand touched skin, and for one brief, disoriented moment, he thought he was home.

Then the memories came flooding back. The hospital. The paternity results. The bar. The tears.

She cheated on me. Both kids. Neither one is mine.

His stomach turned. He pulled his hand back slowly, clenching his jaw, and made a silent vow right there in the bed of a stranger.

No more. I'm done living for her. From now on, I live for myself.

He turned his head to the left, expecting to find an empty pillow.

Instead, he found a woman.

She was lying on her side, facing him, her dark hair fanned across the white pillow. Her lips were slightly parted, and a soft flush colored her cheeks in the golden morning light streaming through the window. She looked peaceful, almost fragile, completely different from the commanding figure who had silenced an entire bar with a single check.

Ryan's breath caught in his chest.

He did not know her name. He did not know how he got here. But lying beside her in this stranger's bed, watching the sunlight trace the curve of her face, he understood that something had happened last night that he could not take back.

He stared at the mysterious woman sleeping peacefully beside him, her delicate face flushed in the morning sunlight streaming through the window.
