CHAPTER 22:

The colossal carcass of Garm the World-Breaker lay like a ruptured mountain in the center of the loading dock courtyard. Wisps of foul purple smoke and expanding heat waves still rose from its shattered black iron plates, sizzling as they met the cool breeze of the post-apocalyptic afternoon.

Mark stood calmly atop the fractured concrete barrier, his blue system interface hovering seamlessly before his eyes. With his newly unlocked [Lord of the Domain] title activated, he could feel a massive surge of ambient energy actively replenishing his mana pool at twice its normal velocity. Beside him, Shadow’s chest rumbled with a deep, rhythmic vibration, his black fur releasing soft embers that drifted into the air.

Mark reached out his hand toward the space directly above the Behemoth’s cooling remains, where the pristine silver Calamity Class resource chest hummed with an iridescent light. With a simple swipe of his finger, he tapped the glowing lock mechanism.

5x Stat Crystals: Low-Grade (Strength / Agility / Mana)

1x Rare Structural Blueprint: 'The Elemental Hatchery' (Fortress Expansion)

Mark looked down at the items as they materialized and quietly dissolved into his Baron-Grade Spatial Ring. The Subterranean Source material felt cold, vibrating with a heavy, aquatic weight that resonated deeply with his mana signature.

"An Abyssal element," Mark murmured, his eyes narrowing as he analyzed the system text. "My SSS-rank talent requires rare elemental bases to synthesize high-tier mythical variants. This is exactly what I need to secure my fourth beast slot."

"Lord Mark!"

The heavy, metallic scraping of footsteps interrupted his thoughts. Gideon Cross walked through the shattered entrance gates, his face pale but completely composed. Behind him, the ten rogue hunters stood in tight formation, their heavy polycarbonate ballistic shields held firmly at their sides, their tactical crossbows slung cleanly over their shoulders.

Gideon stopped exactly five paces away from Mark, dropping to one knee with absolute, submissive precision. The arrogance of the former Rank 2 leaderboard assassin was entirely gone, replaced by a deep, survival-driven respect.

"The third-floor cinema hive has been completely purged, Lord Mark," Gideon reported, his voice crisp. "All spider silk cocoons have been cut down, and the survivors are being escorted to the ground-floor grocery warehouse for safety monitoring. My squad is awaiting your secondary directive."

Mark turned his cold, golden eyes onto the kneeling assassin. "You did well, Gideon. You proved your squad isn't entirely dead weight. But our protection period has expired. The outside world is expanding, and a fortress with static walls eventually becomes a cage if you don't control the surrounding perimeters."

Mark swiped his hand through the air, expanding the regional map tab on his blue interface screen. The mapping data for Sector 4 showed the mall as a bright green safe zone, but the grid surrounding it—the downtown commercial districts and the underground metropolitan rail networks—was marked in a dangerous, pulsing shade of crimson.

"Mr. Shola!" Mark called out, his voice sharp and resonant.

Mr. Shola sprinted out from behind a stacked pile of reinforced shipping crates, dropping his hot metal pipe and bowing so low his head nearly clipped his knees.

"Yes, Lord Mark! I am here! The construction labor crew is already working on the southern wall reinforcements!"

"Leave the masonry to the civilian laborers," Mark commanded flatly. "Take five of Gideon’s armored men and establish a secure supply line between the mall's rear loading bays and the commercial wholesale market across the street. I want every can of food, every medical crate, and every lithium battery cell locked inside our basement storage before sundown."

"Right away, Lord Mark! It will be done!" Mr. Shola barked, frantically waving at five of the tactical hunters to follow his lead.

Mark turned his gaze back to Gideon Cross. "Gideon, stand up. Grab your crossbow and follow me. We are stepping outside the perimeter lines."

Gideon’s eyes widened slightly, a flicker of instinctive caution crossing his sharp face as he looked out at the ash-filled, crimson sky of the city streets. "Outside, Lord Mark? The global system announcement said the dimensional rifts have expanded permanently across the sector. The city center is a hot zone right now."

"Which is exactly why we are hunting," Mark said, a cold, predatory smile cutting across his face. He jumped down from the concrete barrier, his boots clicking firmly against the asphalt. "The monster tide was just the frontline wave. To ensure this mall remains completely unkillable, we need an aquatic beast to control the flooded underground water lines beneath our foundation. And I know exactly where the nest is hiding."

Mark raised his right hand, pointing his finger toward the dark, gaping entrance of the Grand Plaza Subway Station located just fifty yards across the main highway ruins. The subterranean staircase was choked with thick, black swamp water that bubbled up from the underground tunnels, reeking of ancient rot and sulfur.

"Shadow, Sly, with me," Mark commanded through the mental link. "Zephyr, take the high vanguard. Maintain a spatial rift anchor over the roof."

With a collective, low roar from his protectors, Mark stepped out of the mall's secure perimeter, leading his elite army straight into the dark, flooded depths of the city's underbelly.

Behind him, the dark water of the reservoir pool was completely smooth, like a sheet of black glass. There was no sign of Kraken, his newly bound Abyssal Leviathan, nor was there any trace of Sly or Shadow. His beasts had entirely dissolved into the surrounding darkness and water using their active stealth abilities. To anyone walking into the chamber, Mark looked like a lone, exhausted teenager trapped in the dark underbelly of the city."Hold it right there! Stripped wiring hung like weeping vines from the cracked tiled ceiling, and dead, rusted turnstiles were half-submerged in the dark flood.Mark waded forward without a single flicker of hesitation, the freezing black water parting smoothly around his thighs. Through [Shared Senses], his night vision was absolute. He was looking through Shadow’s crimson eyes, mapping the underwater currents through the subtle heat-receptors of Sly’s iron scales.
