CHAPTER 23:

The staircase of the Grand Plaza Subway Station felt like descending into the throat of an ancient, aquatic graveyard.

The air down here was thick, cold, and heavy with the suffocating reek of stagnant river mud and decaying sulfur. Black, viscous swamp water sat frozen on the concrete steps, filling the lower concourse up to Mark’s waist. Stripped wiring hung like weeping vines from the cracked tiled ceiling, and dead, rusted turnstiles were half-submerged in the dark flood.

Mark waded forward without a single flicker of hesitation, the freezing black water parting smoothly around his thighs. Through [Shared Senses], his night vision was absolute. He was looking through Shadow’s crimson eyes, mapping the underwater currents through the subtle heat-receptors of Sly’s iron scales. Every ripple in the dark water was instantly translated into clean tactical data on his reticle.

Behind him, Gideon Cross held his polycarbonate ballistic shield tight against his chest, his knuckles white as his fingers gripped a carbon-fiber tactical crossbow. The level 3 assassin was breathing heavily, his eyes dodging frantically across the dark ceiling panels.

"Lord Mark," Gideon whispered, his voice echoing hollowly off the wet tiles. "The water pressure down here is too high. My active agility skills are cut in half while submerged. If we get ambushed from beneath the surface, I won won’t be able to dodge."

"Then don't dodge. Stand behind Sly," Mark said, his voice flat and calm. He didn't even take his hands out of his jacket pockets.

Shadow walked right beside Mark, his bear-sized frame pushing through the black water with terrifying ease. The sub-zero hellfire dancing across the hound's fur hissed violently against the water, turning the surrounding pool into a boiling layer of thick white steam that masked their approach. Sly slithered entirely beneath the surface, his massive eighteen-foot iron body moving like a silent, submerged submarine, his matte-black scales cutting through the debris without a single sound.

Splash.

A sudden, sharp ripple distorted the surface of the water twenty yards ahead, right near the flooded ticket booths. Dozens of pale, hairless heads with bulbous black eyes and rows of needle-like teeth emerged from the dark pool. Their bodies resembled mutated, muscular frogs with long, scythe-like webbed claws that clicked against the submerged iron rails.

[MONSTER IDENTIFIED]

Species: Deep-Sea Lurker (Common Class)

Level: 7

Combat Power: 95 each

Area Buff: [Submerged Terror] — Enemy attack speed increased by +30% while submerged.

"Over twenty of them," Gideon gasped, rapidly raising his crossbow and locking three steel-tipped hunting bolts into the rail. "They’re level 7! Lord Mark, their combat power is almost equal to a human squad leader!"

The Deep-Sea Lurkers let out a collective, high-pitched screech that vibrated through the flooded concrete walls. With a massive splash, they dove beneath the black water, disappearing from the naked human eye as they swarmed toward Mark’s position like a pack of underwater piranhas.

"Sly. Clear the floor. [Toxic Cloud]," Mark commanded mentally, his thoughts executing at the exact speed of light.

Beneath the surface, Sly opened his massive, crown-crested jaws. Instead of exhaling his toxic gas into the air, he unleashed [Toxic Cloud] directly into the water. A massive, concentrated jet of bubbling green acid mist surged through the pool, rapidly turning the black swamp water into a boiling, highly corrosive chemical soup.

The Deep-Sea Lurkers swimming forward let out muffled, agonizing shrieks underwater. The acidic water instantly ate through their pale, hairless skin, dissolving their webbed claws and blinding their bulbous black eyes. Within seconds, a dozen mutated carcasses floated up to the surface, their flesh smoking and bubbling into white foam.

The remaining eight Lurkers, driven by sheer survival panic, abandoned their underwater assault. They leaped out of the boiling, acidic water, using their powerful hind legs to latch onto the concrete ceiling pillars directly above Mark's head, preparing for a desperate downward ambush.

"Zephyr, down," Mark thought.

SKRRRCH!

A jagged, pitch-black dimensional tear ripped open in the ceiling right above the ticket booths. Zephyr, the twenty-four-foot Roc of the Void, didn't even need to squeeze his massive frame down into the narrow subway tunnel. He simply thrust one colossal, midnight-blue talon of spatial glass straight through the [Spatial Rift].

The massive talon swiped through the air with a dull, heavy whoosh, creating a crushing wave of localized gravitational pressure. The eight remaining level 7 monsters didn't even have the chance to jump. The sheer gravity flattened them against the concrete pillars, crushing their bones into powder before the talon retracted, sealing the portal shut.

Gideon Cross slowly lowered his crossbow, his jaw dropped as he looked at the floating, smoking remains covering the tracks. He hadn't even fired a single bolt. The entire level 7 monster pack had been systematically annihilated in less than twenty seconds without Mark shifting a single inch from his stance.

"Unbelievable..." Gideon muttered, wiping a splash of green acid foam off his shield. "They didn't even touch us."

Mark walked past the floating carcasses, his eyes locked onto the very back of the dark train platform. Through [Shared Senses], he could feel a massive, heavy pulse radiating from the deep subway tunnel that led to the city's central water treatment reservoirs. The Subterranean Source core material inside his spatial ring was vibrating violently, responding to a massive concentration of high-tier system energy hiding in the deep dark.

"Gideon, keep moving," Mark said, his golden eyes flashing with a cold, predatory light in the dark. "The minions are dead. The fourth slot is waiting for us at the end of the line."
