CHAPTER 10:

Leaving Mr. Shola to sweat over the barricades with the terrified survivors, Mark turned his attention toward the escalators leading to the third floor. Through [Shared Senses], he felt a bizarre, pulsing rhythm vibrating from the upper deck. It didn’t feel like the clumsy stomping of Orcs or the chaotic scuttling of Goblins—it was a rhythmic, scratching vibration humming through the steel support beams of the mall.

Zephyr hovered silently in the vaulted air above, his silver feathers occasionally sparking with static electricity. Shadow walked at Mark’s left heel, his crimson eyes scanning the shadows cast by non-functional digital clothing advertisements. Sly slithered quietly along the escalator tracks, his iron scales clicking softly against the frozen metal steps.

As they ascended to the third level, the ambient light faded completely. The massive glass skylight of the fountain square no longer illuminated this sector. Instead, the entire corridor leading to the luxury cinema complex was draped in thick, gray, rope-like sheets of sticky webbing. The air was damp, freezing, and reeked of iron and rotting organic matter. Torn clothing, empty survival backpacks, and dry bones lay tangled in the webs lining the walls.

[SYSTEM WARNING]

Entered Restricted Zone: The Arachnid Cineplex

Area Danger Level: High

Infestation Type: Shadow Silk Crawlers

Mark stopped at the entrance of the main lobby. The carpeted floor was entirely covered in a thick layer of white silk that deadened the sound of his footsteps. Hanging from the high ceilings were dozens of massive, human-sized cocoons. Some were still twitching weakly—unfortunate shoppers or mall security guards dragged up during the initial panic.

Scritch. Scritch.

From the darkness behind the concession stands, multiple pairs of glowing, bulbous red eyes snapped open. Dozens of them. Three-foot-tall spiders with jagged, obsidian-hard legs and abdomens pulsing with purple toxic energy crawled out from behind popcorn machines and overturned ticket booths.

[TARGET IDENTIFIED]

Monster: Shadow Silk Crawler (Common Class)

Level: 4

Combat Power: 35 each

"Thirty-five combat power each is nothing but a snack for you guys," Mark said, his voice dropping to a cold, flat whisper. He didn't even draw his hands out of his pockets. "Sly, clear the front line. Zephyr, cut down the cocoons before they suffocate."

Sly let out a low, vibrating hiss that shook the silk threads on the floor. The eighteen-foot Abyssal Viper shot forward like an armored battering ram, plowing straight through the concession counter and crushing three spiders into green fluids instantly. Opening his jaws, he activated [Toxic Cloud]. A thick, heavy wave of emerald acid mist rolled across the lobby.

The Shadow Silk Crawlers caught in the cloud let out high-pitched screeches as their hairy legs and soft abdomens began to bubble and melt under the acidic vapor. They tried to fire strings of sticky silk to trap the giant snake, but the acid dissolved the webs before they could reach Sly’s dense iron scales.

High above, Zephyr executed [Gale Force]. Violent horizontal hurricane winds tore through the lobby like a storm of blades. Sharp silver feathers channeled the wind to cut cleanly through the thick silk ropes holding the human cocoons to the ceiling. One by one, the massive pods fell safely to the carpeted floor away from the frontline battle.

Two spiders tried to ambush Mark from the ceiling directly overhead, dropping down with fangs bared and dripping with purple paralytic venom.

Mark didn't move an inch.

Whoosh!

Shadow used [Shadow Step], disappearing from Mark’s side and reappearing on the ceiling panels above. The midnight Hellhound intercepted both spiders mid-air, his jaws clamping down with an [Abyssal Bite] on the first while his steel claws ripped the second spider completely in half. The two dead monsters crashed to the floor, smoking with freezing black hellfire.

Experience Gained: 600 XP

[DROPPED ITEMS]

12x Low-Grade Arachnid Cores

2x Rare Monster Silk Packs

Mark walked past the smoking, melting remains of the crawler pack, his eyes focused on the heavy double doors of Theater 1. The vibrations he felt earlier weren't coming from these smaller minions; they were emanating from inside the main IMAX auditorium. The heavy doors were completely sealed shut by a wall of hardened, calcified black silk that looked as solid as stone.

"The minions are dead, which means the mother is waiting inside," Mark muttered, his mental link with his three beasts tightening. "Sly, melt that door down. Let's see what kind of boss is hiding in the dark."

Sly slithered forward, his toxic green eyes narrowing as he pressed his massive crested head against the hardened silk barrier, preparing to unleash his highest concentration of acid.

Behind him, the dark water of the reservoir pool was completely smooth, like a sheet of black glass. There was no sign of Kraken, his newly bound Abyssal Leviathan, nor was there any trace of Sly or Shadow. His beasts had entirely dissolved into the surrounding darkness and water using their active stealth abilities. To anyone walking into the chamber, Mark looked like a lone, exhausted teenager trapped in the dark underbelly of the city."Hold it right there! Hands where I can see them!"A harsh, authoritative voice barked from the entrance archway. A tactical flashlight beam sliced through the thick, sulfurous air, blindingly illuminating Mark’s face.Seven human hunters marched onto the platform,

Through [Shared Senses], his night vision was absolute. He was looking through Shadow’s crimson eyes, mapping the underwater currents through the subtle heat-receptors of Sly’s iron scales.
