Chapter 2: Awakening the Infinite Sanctuary System

Jax stumbled back as web-like cracks spread across the front glass window. The sound of the glass breaking rang out like a gunshot in the silent shop.

Tiny sharp pieces rained down onto the tiled floor, sparkling under the dim fluorescent lights.

The giant beast outside let out a horrible, guttural growl that made the metal shelves shake. It pulled back its heavy arm, preparing to swing a second time and smash through the remaining frame.

Jax's heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. Cold sweat broke out across his forehead, stinging his bruised right eye. He knew he could not outrun this monster. His body was already aching from Victor’s brutal beating, and his legs felt heavy like lead.

"Move, Jax, move!" he screamed at himself in a frantic whisper.

Desperate for anything to use as a weapon, Jax reached behind the checkout counter. His hand brushed against a wooden broom leaning against the wall. He grabbed the handle tightly, his knuckles turning white. He snapped the soft brush head off against the edge of the counter, leaving himself with a sharp, splintered wooden stick.

It was a useless piece of wood against a monster that had just tossed a heavy man like a rag doll, but it was all he had.

Jax held the wooden stake in front of his chest with shaking hands. He planted his feet on the ground, staring directly into the glowing yellow eyes of the beast. If he was going to die tonight in this dirty little store, he was going to go down fighting.

The ghoul roared, spraying dark blood and foul foam from its maw. It lunged forward through the cracked window, its thick black claws reaching directly for Jax's throat.

"Come on!" Jax shouted, bracing for the bone-crushing impact.

Just as the razor-sharp claws were an inch away from his face, a bright golden light burst out of nowhere. The light was so fierce that it blinded Jax for a second, filling every corner of the dim shop with a warm, brilliant glow.

BANG!

A loud sound, like a massive iron door slamming shut, echoed through the street.

The giant ghoul did not hit Jax. Instead, its heavy body slammed hard into an invisible wall that had instantly formed right at the window line.

The force of the impact was so great that the monster's claws snapped backward with a sickening crack. The beast let out a high-pitched shriek of pain as a pulse of golden energy blasted out from the invisible shield, throwing the heavy monster backward. It flew ten feet through the air and crashed hard into the asphalt road outside.

Jax froze, his arms still raised, his breath coming in fast, ragged gasps. He blinked hard, trying to understand what had just happened.

Right in front of his eyes, floating in mid-air inside the store, was a translucent screen made of glowing golden letters. The letters were crisp, clean, and hovered right before him.

[Infinite Sanctuary System Activated!]

[Host Jax Vance has been recognized as the sole owner of this domain.]

Jax dropped his wooden stick. It clattered uselessly against the floor tiles. He stared at the glowing words, his mouth open in utter shock.

More lines of golden text began to scroll down the screen quickly.

Jax slowly reached out his right hand, his fingers trembling as he touched the floating letters. They felt soft and warm, like sunlight on a cold morning.

He turned his head and looked at the front display window. The web-like cracks in the glass were still there, but a shimmering curtain of faint golden light covered the entire opening. Outside, the giant ghoul was pushing itself up from the street, its yellow eyes burning with pure rage.

The beast charged forward again, slamming its massive shoulder into the window with all its strength.

THUD!

The golden barrier didn't even shake. The force of the blow bounced right back into the beast, throwing it back onto the ground once more. Jax stood just two inches away on the inside of the glass. He could smell the rotten stench of the monster, but he didn't feel a single vibration.

He was safe. The monster could not touch him.

A deep sense of relief washed over Jax, making his knees feel weak. He leaned against the counter, letting out a breath he felt like he had been holding for hours. For the first time in his miserable life, he had power. He had a shield that nothing in this ruined world could break.

Jax looked down at his right hand. The skin on his knuckles was still torn and bleeding from when Victor had thrown him onto the sidewalk. Pain was throbbing through his entire body.

He looked over at the store shelves. Right next to the register sat a row of cheap, one-dollar plastic water bottles.

Jax picked up a bottle. As soon as his fingers wrapped around the plastic, a small blue box popped up over the bottle.

Jax didn't hesitate. He twisted the plastic cap open and poured the cool water down his throat.

The moment the liquid touched his tongue, a soothing warmth spread from his stomach to his chest, arms, and legs. Jax watched in awe as the bloody scrapes on his hands closed up instantly, leaving smooth, new skin.

The sharp pain in his bruised ribs melted away like ice under the sun. His swollen right eye opened wide, his vision clearer than it had ever been.

He felt strong, refreshed, and full of energy.

"This is incredible," Jax whispered, a slow grin finally spreading across his face. "This isn't just a shop anymore. This is my kingdom."

Out on the dark street, more mutated figures began to crawl out of the red haze, drawn by the noise. Among them, Jax saw the twisted, pale form of Victor, who was now crawling on his hands and knees, his body half-transformed into a ghoul. Victor’s yellow eyes looked up at the lit store window, his mouth making silent, hungry biting motions.

Jax looked down at his former landlord with cold, unfeeling eyes. Victor was a monster now, trapped in the nightmare outside, while Jax sat inside a warm, golden paradise.

Suddenly, the golden screen in front of Jax flashed bright red, letting out a sharp chime that echoed in his mind.
