The hounds woke her first.

Elara had been asleep on the sofa, a half-read book on her chest, when two warm weights shifted at her feet and began to growl.

It was a low, steady rumble, the kind that rose from deep in a throat. She stirred, blinking at the dark.

"Ash? Ember? What is it?"

Neither dog looked at her. Both stood rigid beside the door, white eyes fixed on the wood. Their fur was bristled. Their tails stood straight as rods.

Somewhere far below, a stair creaked.

Elara sat up.

The Archive Division was the quietest place Kael had ever been.It lay four floors beneath Association headquarters, past two checkpoints, a pressure door, and a lift that smelled of dust and old paper. Hale had arranged the pass that morning with a single phone call and a very tired sigh. Weekly report, the form read. Supervising officer to accompany subject to Archive for review of gate phenomena. It was almost true."Don't touch anything," Hale muttered as the lift doors opened. "Don't read anything aloud. And if she offers you tea, drink it.""Why?""Because she gets offended."Kael raised an eyebrow. "You've met her.""Once. Fifteen years ago." Hale's mouth twisted. "She told me my handwriting was a crime."Sublevel Four was a maze of shelves. They rose twenty feet on either side of a narrow aisle, packed with leather-bound ledgers, brittle scrolls, wooden crates stamped with faded dates. Low lamps burned in brass fittings at long intervals, and between them the dark lay thick as

The Council met on the top floor of Association headquarters, in a room that had been designed to make people feel small. It was long and windowless, paneled in dark wood, with a single oval table at its center. Five high-backed chairs sat along the far side. Behind them, a vast banner of white silk hung from the ceiling, embroidered with a circle of nine interlocking rings. A thin shaft of light fell from a skylight directly onto the lone chair at the opposite end, where the accused usually sat.Kael stood beside that chair at exactly nine o'clock, with his hands at his sides and his heart hammering.Hale stood on his left, rigid as a post. Miri and Joss stood beyond him, both pale. Elara stood on his right in a borrowed gray jacket, her arm no longer in its sling, her chin lifted. Lucian Ashworth waited a little apart, immaculate in white and gold, as relaxed as a man at a garden party.Ash and Ember? Kael asked silently.Outside, Ash replied. Under a bench. Bored.Good.Vesper watc

Elara was strong.Kael had never realized how strong. She pulled against his arms with a strength that had nothing to do with muscle, her bare feet scraping on the frozen pavement, her eyes fixed on the gold ring above. The thread of light between her shadow and the gate trembled and strained, and every inch she gained, Kael lost."Let me go," she whispered again. "He's calling me.""Nobody's calling you.""I can hear him.""Then hear me."His shadow tore across the courtyard, hurling itself against the golden thread. The light shrugged it off like rain. The pressure on his chest doubled, then tripled. His knees buckled. My king, the Knight said urgently. Brute force will not break this. It is not a chain. It is a song. Then how do I stop it?Sing something louder.Kael almost laughed. I can't sing. Not with your voice. He closed his eyes.He thought of the orphanage wall.It was a crooked gray thing at the back of the yard, three meters tall and crowned with broken glass that the car

The world stopped. It happened between one heartbeat and the next. The howl of the sirens cut off mid-wail. A nurse froze with her arms around a wheelchair, her mouth open in a shout that never came. A piece of glass hung in the air above the courtyard, glittering like a tear. Even the smoke from the burning ambulance stood still, a gray column of motionless cloth.Kael stood in the middle of it all and could not hear a single sound.Time, he thought. It's stopped time. Not time, the Knight said, very low. Only the world's attention. We are still moving because it wishes us to.Who is it?I do not know.He turned in a slow circle. Hale stood frozen at the barricade with his sword half drawn. Miri and Joss were statues. The crooked-nosed man from the retest had stopped in mid-stride, one boot lifted. Even Ash and Ember were stone, their white eyes locked on the sky.Only three people in the courtyard were moving.Lucian stood ten paces away, his face white, one hand pressed against the

The old hospital had been dying for a decade, but nobody had ever expected it to die like this.Kael came around the last corner at a dead run and stopped short. Beyond the Association's barricades, above the cracked east wing, the sky had turned gold. Not the soft gold of sunrise. This was a hard, burning, metallic gold, like the inside of a furnace. A vast ring of light hung over the roof, five stories wide, with eight thick rays spreading from its edge like the spokes of a wheel. The air around it rippled. Windows blew out one by one, and glass rained onto the courtyard in glittering sheets. The sigil, Kael thought. But the size of a building.[HEAVENLY GATE DETECTED.][RANK: UNCLASSIFIED. ESTIMATED: A+.][SPAWN IMMINENT.]My king, the Knight said, very low. This is it.The one you recognize?I recognize the light. I do not recognize its door. The cordon was chaos.Ambulances lined the road with their doors flung open. Nurses and orderlies pushed wheelchairs down the pavement in a

Hale lived in a small gray flat above a closed repair shop.Kael stood on the metal stairs at six in the morning with Hollis's note folded in his fist, and he had been standing there for ten minutes. Elara was safe with her neighbor, an old woman who kept a cricket bat beside her door. Ash and Ember were curled on her sofa. Vesper watched from a rooftop across the street, silent and patient, a cool thread at the edge of his mind.My king, the Knight said gently. You cannot knock with your thoughts.I know. Then knock. He knocked. The door opened almost at once. Hale stood there in a rumpled undershirt, bleary-eyed, a cup of black tea in one hand. He took one look at Kael's face and stepped aside without a word. The flat was tidy in the way of men who lived alone. A narrow bed, a folding table, a shelf of worn paperbacks. On the wall, in a plain wooden frame, hung a photograph Kael had never seen.Six young people stood in front of a gate, grinning at the camera. A tall, dark-haired ma
