Zervok stared at the crimson cores, his pulse thrumming in his throat. He reached out, his fingers grazing the velvet lining of the container.

"These aren't from any hollow I’ve ever seen," Zervok murmured, his voice tight. "They’re too steady. Too alive."

Qevran stood perfectly still, his eyes tracking every flicker of the machine’s neon light. "We found them in the crater, Zervok. Not the outskirts—the center. My scouts lost half a squad just grabbing that box. We don't have the key to open their potential. We’re hoping you do."

Zervok pulled a crimson core from the box. It felt warm, vibrating with a frequency that made his teeth ache. He turned toward the vending machine, but as he moved to insert it into the slot, the machine’s display erupted in a violent cascade of corrupted code.

[CRITICAL ERROR: INCOMPATIBLE ENERGY SOURCE.]

[SYSTEM OVERRIDE: INITIATING EMERGENCY LOCKDOWN.]

"Hey, what are you doing?" Qevran stepped forward, his hand dropping to his sidearm. "I thought you were the one in control."

"I am in control, damn it!" Zervok snapped, shielding the machine with his body. "It’s just... it’s reacting to the energy. It’s never seen anything this potent before. Just give me a second."

"You better make it quick," Qevran growled, glancing toward the tunnel entrance. "The noise from that surge just triggered a local alarm. We’ve got something coming, and it’s not just a swarm of rot-walkers."

Zervok ignored him, frantically tapping the glass interface. "Come on, stop the glitch. You wanted a challenge, right? Here’s your challenge. Take the core!"

He slammed the crimson crystal into the slot. The machine let out a sound like grinding tectonic plates. The neon blue light flickered and died, replaced by a jagged, stuttering pulse of sickly violet and blinding red.

[MAINTENANCE MODE: ACTIVATED.]

[SUB-QUEST: STABILIZE CORE FEED.]

[TASK: REMOVE OBSTRUCTION FROM VAPOR VENT.]

"A maintenance quest?" Zervok cursed, grabbing a heavy wrench he’d scavenged earlier. "Are you kidding me? Right now?"

A tall, spindly figure detached itself from the shadows of the parking garage’s ceiling. It hit the concrete with the sound of snapping bone. It was a mutation, elongated and twitching, with a mouth that stretched far beyond human capacity. It let out a high-pitched, warbling hiss.

"Zervok! We’ve got company!" Qevran shouted, drawing his pistol. "Move!"

"I can't move!" Zervok yelled back, ducking behind the vending machine as a blur of grey claws raked the air where his head had been. "If I don't clear the vent, the whole machine is going to fry itself, and you can kiss your armor upgrades goodbye!"

"I don't care about the armor, I care about my skin!" Qevran fired three rounds. The bullets struck the creature, but it barely flinched, its hide thick and rubbery. "It’s fast! How are you supposed to fix a machine while this thing is dancing on your skull?"

"I don't know, maybe you could try shooting it somewhere that actually hurts!" Zervok scrambled to the back of the machine, his hands trembling as he pried at the rusted metal plate covering the vent.

A shadow loomed over him. The creature lunged, its limbs bending at impossible angles. Zervok swung the wrench blindly, catching the beast in the shoulder, but the force of the blow threw him against the cold, vibrating metal of his machine.

"Help me out, Tervok!" Zervok shouted toward the shadows, hoping the technician he’d spotted near the perimeter had followed Qevran.

A man in a grease-stained jumpsuit, Tervok Mair, darted out from behind a pillar, his eyes wide as he stared at the flickering machine. "I don't know anything about that tech, kid! The energy output... it’s not reading as electricity. It’s like it’s pulling ambient reality into the coils!"

"Just keep it distracted!" Zervok roared, digging his fingers into the vent. He found a mass of dark, necrotic sludge clogging the intake—the remains of whatever had crawled inside. He yanked it out, his skin burning as it touched him.

The creature shrieked, a sound that bypassed the ears and vibrated straight into Zervok’s marrow. It abandoned Tervok and turned its attention to the machine.

"It’s going for the core!" Qevran shouted, emptying his magazine into the beast’s legs. The creature stumbled, but didn't stop.

Zervok didn't have time to think. He grabbed his scavenged pistol from the floor, shoved it into the machine’s interface—the system actually sucked the magazine into the housing—and leveled it at the creature’s chest.

"Eat this, you freak!"

The machine hissed, transferring a surge of crimson energy into the pistol. Zervok pulled the trigger. A concentrated beam of searing red light punched through the creature’s torso, leaving a gaping, smoking hole. The beast collapsed, its body dissolving into nothing but black ash and a single, vibrating core.

Zervok collapsed against the machine, his lungs burning. The light on the front stopped stuttering. It steadied into a calm, predatory crimson glow.

[SUB-QUEST COMPLETE.]

[SYSTEM STABILIZED.]

[NEW BLUEPRINT UNLOCKED: THE BLOOD-IRON REAPER.]

[WARNING: REQUIREMENT NOT MET.]

"What is that?" Tervok scrambled over, his breath hitching. "What did you just unlock? That’s not a standard item. That’s a military-grade kinetic projector."

Zervok stared at the screen, his heart sinking as the final line scrolled into view.

[SACRIFICE REQUIRED: HUMAN DNA.]

"Human DNA?" Zervok wiped the sweat from his forehead. "It wants blood. It wants a literal sacrifice to print the weapon."

Qevran walked over, his expression unreadable. He looked at the smoking remains of the creature, then at the machine, then at Zervok.

"You did it," Qevran said, his voice unusually quiet. "You stabilized it. But that sacrifice... that’s a heavy price for a piece of hardware, isn't it?"

Zervok stood up, his gaze hardening as he looked at the Crimson cores left in the box. "It’s not just a piece of hardware. Look at the energy output, Tervok. It’s not just killing things. It’s harvesting everything."

"Are you going to do it?" Tervok asked, looking nervously at the slot. "Are you going to give it what it wants?"

Zervok placed his hand on the glass. He felt a faint, rhythmic pulse—the heartbeat of the machine answering his own. He thought about the scavengers, the rot-walkers, and the endless, suffocating darkness of the city.

"If this is the only way to get a weapon capable of killing those things," Zervok whispered, "then I don't really have a choice, do I?"

Qevran leaned in, his face inches from the blue-red glow. "You’re changing, kid. You don't even look like the guy who was crying about stale pretzels two days ago."

"The world changed," Zervok said, his voice devoid of emotion. "I’m just keeping up. Tervok, get your gear. We’re going to need more of these crimson cores. If this machine wants blood, I’m going to make sure it’s not mine."

"What about the militia?" Tervok asked, glancing at Qevran. "Are we still in business?"

Qevran straightened his vest, his eyes flicking to the machine with a hunger that matched its own. "Business? We’re not in business, Tervok. We’re in an arms race. And I think we just found the lead runner."

Zervok watched them both, the machine humming a low, content tune against his back. He knew he was being played by the system, and he knew Qevran was using him, but for the first time since he’d woken up in the rubble, he felt like the predator instead of the prey.

"Let’s get moving," Zervok said, turning toward the dark, ruined mouth of the garage. "The machine is hungry, and I’m starting to think it’s the only thing in this city that tells the truth."

The heavy, rhythmic clack-clack-clack of the machine’s steel stabilizers echoed against the subterranean walls, a mechanical heartbeat that sounded far too deliberate. Zervok scrambled to his feet, his lungs burning, and lunged after the retreating monstrosity."Hey! Wait up, you piece of junk!" Zervok yelled, stumbling over a discarded pipe. "You’re heading into the dead zone, you idiot! We don’t have the supplies for that!"Qevran shoved past him, his tactical vest clinking with spare magazines. "Kid, look at the way it’s moving! It’s not looking for a place to park. It’s on a mission.""I don't care if it's on a holy pilgrimage," Zervok snapped, his boots skidding on the slick concrete. "If it leaves me behind, I’m just a guy with a pipe and a death wish. Get moving!"Tervok scrambled to keep pace, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "It’s not emitting electricity anymore, Zervok. "I’m not the one who invited them to dinner, Qevran! Keep your head down and watch the flank!"A figure stepped through the swirling dust of the collapse. He moved with a predatory, fluid grace that stood out against the frantic stumbling of the lesser Syndicate soldiers. This was Cazren M

Zervok stood in the suffocating silence of the parking garage, his fingers still resting on the cool, humming glass of the machine. The crimson glow pulsed in sync with his own heartbeat, a rhythmic, taunting reminder of the price of power."Sacrifice? You have got to be kidding me," Zervok muttered, his voice barely rising above a whisper. "I am not turning this thing into a butcher shop. We find another way."Qevran paced a few feet away, his boots clicking sharply against the cracked concrete. He paused, his expression shifting from curiosity to a calculating grimace. "Look, Zervok, the world out there has moved past morality. If you want the power of that reaper-cannon, you do what you have to do. I’ve got prisoners at the gate who aren't going to live to see sunset anyway. You want to save your conscience? Use them."Zervok turned, his eyes narrowing as he fixed a cold stare on the militia captain. "My conscience isn't a bargaining chip, Qevran. I told you, I’m the landlord. I se

  • Chapter 4: Energy Economics

The silence of the graveyard city was a heavy, suffocating blanket, but for Zervok, it was finally a productive kind of quiet. He dragged the heavy, humming vending machine inch by inch through the debris, seeking the sanctuary of a partially collapsed underground parking structure. The neon blue light cast long, flickering shadows against the concrete pillars, painting the gloom in shades of electric hope and artificial danger. He finally slumped against the metal casing, his muscles screaming in protest. The Grade B cores in his pocket felt like hot coals."Okay, you temperamental hunk of metal," Zervok muttered, sliding down to the floor. "Let's see what these Grade B beauties actually get me."He pulled the two Grade B crystals out, their violet luminescence casting a strange, ethereal glow on his palms. • Chapter 3: The First Turf War

The silence that followed the blast was absolute, save for the rhythmic, pulsing hum of the vending machine. Zervok stood amidst the settling dust, his chest heaving, his knuckles white as he gripped the lead pipe. The three scavengers were gone, reduced to nothing more than a faint ozone scent and a scattering of jagged, violet crystals—the "harvest," as the system had implicitly framed it.Zervok knelt, his hands trembling, and gathered the glowing cores. They felt warm, humming with a frantic, residual energy that mirrored his own accelerated heartbeat."Not a merchant," he whispered to the empty, debris-choked street. "Just a guy trying to stay alive in a graveyard."He stood, but before he could even tuck the cores into his pocket, the shadows at the end of the street shifted. The sound of heavy boots hitting shattered glass returned—this time, there were more of them. Six, maybe seven figures emerged from the gloom, led by a man whose face was a roadmap of jagged scars and unche
