Chapter 1: The Useless Gift

The sky was the color of a bruised plum, hanging low over the jagged, skeletal remains of the city. Zervok Aldrathen pulled himself out from under a pile of pulverized concrete, his lungs burning as he inhaled the acrid scent of scorched rubber and rot. His head felt like it had been split open with a dull axe.

"God, my skull," he groaned, clutching his temples. "Where the hell am I? Everything looks like a graveyard."

He pushed himself up, his palms scraping against grit and shattered glass. A few yards away, a group of figures stumbled through the haze. They moved with a jerky, disjointed rhythm, their skin gray and sloughing off in wet, necrotic strips.

"Hey! You guys!" Zervok called out, his voice cracking. "I’m hurt, man. Can you help me out? Does anyone have a radio or a phone?"

The figures stopped. Their heads snapped toward him in perfect, unnatural synchronization. A low, rattling growl emanated from their chests, and as they turned fully, Zervok saw the hollow, milky voids where their eyes should have been.

"Oh, no. You’ve got to be kidding me," Zervok whispered, backing away until his heels hit a rusted support beam. "Is this a prank? Seriously?"

The lead creature lunged, its jaw unhinging with a sickening pop. Zervok scrambled backward, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Suddenly, a sharp, crystalline chime echoed inside his mind. A translucent blue screen flickered into existence before his eyes, blocking his view of the snarling monsters.

[SYSTEM AWAKENING: HOST ZERVOK ALDRATHEN.]

[CURRENT STATUS: CRITICAL.]

[MANDATORY DEPLOYMENT: VENDING MACHINE – CLASS: COMMON.]

"A vending machine? Are you joking?" Zervok yelled at the empty air, dodging a clawed hand that raked through the space where his face had been a second ago. "I’m about to be eaten alive, and you’re giving me a snack dispenser? Seriously, system, read the room!"

[ENERGY DEPLETION IMMINENT. DEPLOYMENT REQUIRED.]

[COST: 100% OF REMAINING VITALITY.]

"Wait, what do you mean 100%? If I spend it all, won't I die?" Zervok shouted, ducking under a swing from a second zombie. He grabbed a jagged length of lead pipe from the debris, swinging it clumsily to keep them at bay. "This is a terrible deal! I’m out!"

The monsters pressed closer, their groans coalescing into a hungry, discordant chorus.

"Look, I don’t know who’s running this, but can we negotiate? How about a weapon? A sword? A gun? Anything?"

[NEGOTIATION NOT FOUND.]

[DEPLOYMENT INITIATED.]

Zervok felt a violent drain on his core, as if his very blood were being siphoned through a straw. His vision blurred, his knees buckling. "You… you piece of… garbage…"

He slammed his hand onto the cracked pavement. A surge of white light erupted from his palm, shaking the ground. Dust billowed, and with a heavy thud that shook the street, a sleek, metallic object materialized in front of him. It was a standard-issue vending machine, glowing with a soft, neon blue light that looked entirely out of place in the ruined hellscape.

It stood as an absurd, cheerful sentinel. The glass display showed rows of overpriced chips, bottled water, and generic sodas.

"A vending machine," Zervok panted, his chest heaving, his body feeling like a hollowed-out husk. "I’m going to die next to a machine that sells corn chips. This is how it ends."

The zombies paused, confused by the sudden appearance of the structure. The lead zombie sniffed the air, its nostrils flaring.

"You want a snack?" Zervok spat, holding the lead pipe tightly. "Fine. Let's see if you're hungry enough to pay the price."

He scrambled behind the vending machine, using it as a barricade. He noticed a small, glowing slot on the side of the machine, pulsing with an expectant red light. A holographic prompt flickered above it: [DEPOSIT CORE TO ACTIVATE VENDING FUNCTION]

"So that’s how it works," Zervok muttered, his eyes darting between the slot and the encroaching horde. "The machine isn't the reward. It's the bait. You want a snack? I need to get one of you to provide the payment."

The lead zombie, a hulking thing in tattered police gear, lurched around the corner of the machine. It didn't look at the snack display; it looked straight at Zervok’s throat.

"Come on then, you ugly sack of rot," Zervok hissed, his voice trembling but his grip firming on the pipe. "Step a little closer. Don't be shy."

The creature lunged. Zervok didn't retreat. He waited until the last possible second, then slammed his shoulder into the vending machine, tilting it just enough to create a bottleneck. The creature stumbled, its foot catching on a piece of protruding rebar.

As it fell forward, Zervok swung the lead pipe with every ounce of strength he had left. The metal connected with the zombie’s temple with a wet, satisfying crunch. The creature dropped instantly, its skull caved in.

Zervok didn't waste a second. He knelt over the corpse, digging his fingers into the mess of its neck until he felt something hard and cold. He pulled out a small, jagged crystal that pulsed with a faint, sickly violet light.

"Is this it? Is this the core?" He wiped the black ichor off on his jeans. "Man, this is gross. I hope this thing is worth it."

He stood up, his legs shaking violently, and walked over to the vending machine. The red light on the slot was flashing faster now, as if it were impatient.

"Alright, you hungry bastard," Zervok said, his voice dropping into a tired, grim murmur. "Here’s your payment. Don't tell me I did all this for a bag of stale pretzels."

He shoved the core into the slot.

The machine let out a low, rhythmic hum that vibrated through the pavement. The lights inside pulsed, shifting from a dull blue to a vibrant, electric gold. The coils in the machine began to turn with a mechanical whirring sound.

Zervok leaned against the glass, watching the spiral rotate. "Come on. Give me something good. I’ve earned a drink, at least."

A bottle of soda shifted, teetered on the edge of the metal rack, and then tumbled downward. It hit the bottom tray with a heavy, metallic clack that echoed through the silent, dead street.

Zervok stared at the chilled bottle, droplets of condensation trailing down its sides. It was the most beautiful, impossible thing he had ever seen.

"Well," he whispered, a hysterical laugh bubbling up in his throat. "At least I’m not dying thirsty."
