The music was a sweeping, orchestral tide that should have drowned out the world, but for Darian, it was nothing more than background noise to the frantic pounding of Elora’s heart against his chest.

"You’re shaking, Elora," Darian whispered, his hand firm on her waist. "That’s not the confident bride-to-be the tabloids promised."

"Stop this," she breathed, her eyes darting toward the edge of the dance floor. "Everyone is watching. Raka is watching. If you have any sense of self-preservation left, you’ll walk out that door right now."

"I spent five years without a sense of self-preservation. It’s a very freeing way to live." Darian spun her, the gold in his eyes flaring as he caught Raka’s murderous glare from across the room. "Besides, I’m the guest of honor. It’d be rude to leave before the main event."

The music hadn't even reached its crescendo when the violins screeched to a halt. Raka Wiranusa had reached the conductor’s podium, his face a mask of barely contained rage. He didn't use a microphone; he didn't need one. His voice cut through the silence like a blade.

"Mr. Vance, was it?" Raka stepped off the dais, his eyes locked on Darian. "I appreciate the enthusiasm, but in this house, we don't usually jump the queue. Elora is mine. The floor is mine. And I’m starting to think your invitation was a mistake."

Darian let go of Elora’s hand, though he didn't step away. He turned slowly, a lazy, mocking smile playing on his lips. "A mistake? And here I thought Oakhaven was a city of opportunity. I see a beautiful woman standing alone, I offer a dance. Is that not how you play the game here, Raka? Or are you just worried I’ve got better footwork?"

A ripple of hushed laughter went through the crowd. Raka’s jaw tightened. "You talk a lot for a man whose bank account I haven't verified yet."

"Then let's verify it," Darian said, his voice dropping into a challenge. "I hear the Meridian Gala always features a 'friendly' wager for the charity foundation. Why don't we make it interesting? A little high-stakes projection."

Raka narrowed his eyes. "Projection? You want to bet on the markets? Here? Now?"

"Why not? The Asian markets just opened. We pick three stocks. Highest percentage gain in the next ten minutes wins." Darian gestured to the massive digital display behind the bar that tracked live global indices. "Unless, of course, the great Raka Wiranusa is afraid of a little volatility."

"Raka, don't," Elora hissed, reaching for his arm. "He’s baiting you."

Raka brushed her off, his ego flared to its breaking point. "Ten million? Is that too rich for your blood, 'Dante'?"

"Ten million is a down payment on a car," Darian countered, his eyes flashing gold. "Let's make it fifty. Winner takes the pot for charity, plus... a personal favor from the loser."

"Fifty million. Fine." Raka signaled his assistant, who rushed forward with a tablet. "Pick your poison, Vance."

Darian didn't even look at the tablet. In his mind, the Archon System was already screaming.

[MARKET ANALYSIS: ACTIVE]

[ALGORITHM: PREDICTIVE FLUX]

[TARGET 1: JIN-TECH SEMI - CURRENT: -2.4%. PREDICTION: +8.1% DUE TO UNANNOUNCED ACQUISITION LEAK IN 3... 2... 1...]

"Jin-Tech," Darian said calmly. "And let's go with Northern Rail and Solar-Sync."

Raka scoffed. "Jin-Tech is tanking. They’ve got a supply chain crisis. You’re throwing your money away."

"We’ll see," Darian said, leaning against a marble pillar. "Your move, Raka."

"Blue-Chip Heavy. Kertamaya Group, Vasantari Logistics, and Wiranusa Energy," Raka barked. "Safe. Solid. Unlike your career."

The room held its breath as the timer on the screen began to tick. For the first five minutes, Raka’s picks climbed steadily, gaining a modest 1.2%. Darian’s picks sat like lead.

"Looks like your 'Venture Capitalist' instincts are a bit rusty," Raka mocked, crossing his arms. "Maybe you should have stayed in Singapore."

"Wait for it," Darian murmured.

At the six-minute mark, a news ticker flashed at the bottom of the screen. JIN-TECH ACQUIRES KOREAN SEMI-CONDUCTOR GIANT IN SURPRISE MIDNIGHT DEAL.

The numbers for Jin-Tech didn't just climb; they exploded. The graph turned into a vertical line of green. Solar-Sync followed suit as a sympathy play. In seconds, Darian’s portfolio was up 12%.

Raka’s face went from smug to ghostly. "That’s... that’s insider trading. You couldn't have known that!"

"I just read the room, Raka," Darian said, pushing off the pillar as the timer hit zero. "Looks like I’m fifty million up. And you owe me a favor."

The crowd erupted into frantic whispering. The 'Exiled Heir' persona was working; he was the most dangerous man in the room, and he hadn't even revealed his name yet.

"What do you want?" Raka spat, his hands shaking. "The money will be transferred to the foundation by morning."

"The money is for the orphans," Darian said, stepping toward Elora. "As for my favor... I want my dance back. Without the interruptions."

Raka looked like he wanted to commit murder in front of three hundred witnesses, but the social cost of reneging on a public bet was too high. He stepped back, his eyes burning with a promise of violence. "Go ahead. It’s just a dance."

Darian took Elora’s hand again, leading her back to the center of the floor. The orchestra began to play a haunting, slow melody.

"You’re insane," Elora whispered as he pulled her close. "You just humiliated him in front of his entire board. He’ll destroy you for this."

"He already tried that five years ago," Darian said, his voice low and dangerous. "He’s running out of tricks, Elora."

"Darian... please. You don't know what he’s capable of now. He’s not just a businessman anymore. He’s—"

"He’s a thief who stole a city," Darian interrupted. "And he stole you. Tell me, do you still wear that locket? The one with the dried jasmine inside? The one you said you’d never take off because it reminded you of the night at the North Ridge?"

Elora gasped, her hand flying to her throat, beneath the diamonds of her necklace. "How... nobody knows about that. I told everyone I lost it."

"You were always a terrible liar, Elora. It’s the only thing I ever liked about you." Darian leaned in, his breath warm against her ear. "I’m not a ghost. And I didn't come back for the money. I came back to burn the house down. Are you going to be inside when it happens?"

"I don't have a choice!" she hissed, her eyes shimmering with tears. "My father’s debts, the company... Raka holds everything. If I leave him, my family ends up in the street. Or worse."

"There’s always a choice," Darian said. "I’m offering you a way out. But I need to know what 'The Eclipse Protocol' is. The System flagged you, Elora. What are you hiding for him?"

Elora’s entire body went rigid. "How do you know that name? Darian, if you know about Eclipse, you’re already a dead man. It’s not a business deal. It’s... it’s a kill switch."

"For what?"

"For everything," she whispered. "The port, the city’s power grid... Raka isn't building a legacy. He’s building a cage."

Before he could press her further, his earpiece crackled with static. Caelan’s voice was urgent. "Darian, we’ve got a problem. Raka’s head of security just pulled your 'Dante Vance' file. They’re running a deep-trace on the Singapore credentials. You’ve got about ninety seconds before they realize your tax ID belongs to a deceased poodle in Bukit Timah."

"Understood," Darian muttered.

"Darian?" Elora asked, sensing the shift in his energy.

"The party’s over," Darian said, his gaze softening for a brief, fleeting second as he looked at her. "Meet me at the old pier. Thursday. Midnight."

"I can't—"

"You will," Darian said, kissing the back of her hand with a flourish that looked like a goodbye. "Because you want to know if I still have the key to that lighthouse."

He turned on his heel, walking away from her with a steady, unhurried pace. He could feel Raka’s eyes on his back, could see the security teams starting to converge at the ballroom exits.

"Caelan, tell me you have a back door," Darian said into his lapel.

"Kitchen service elevator is locked open. There’s a black sedan waiting in the delivery bay. But you’d better move, boss. The 'Crusher' just spotted you from the mezzanine."

Darian didn't run. Running was for the guilty. He moved through the crowd like a shark through water, nodding to a senator here, smiling at a socialite there. He reached the heavy oak doors leading to the service corridor just as a shout rang out behind him.

"Vance! Stop right there!"

Darian slipped through the door, clicking the lock into place. He leaned against the wall for a second, the Archon System pulsing red in his vision.

"I'm getting too old for this," Darian muttered, breaking into a sprint as he headed for the elevator.

"You're twenty-seven, Darian," Caelan’s voice chimed in. "Stop being dramatic and get in the car. We’ve got a war to plan, and I’m pretty sure you just made us the most wanted men in Oakhaven."

"Good," Darian said, the elevator doors sliding shut just as the sound of boots hammered against the wood of the corridor door. "I was getting bored of being a ghost."

As the elevator descended into the dark, Darian watched the golden data streams of the city flicker through the cracks in the door. He had the girl’s attention, he had the villain’s rage, and now, he had the name of the weapon.

The Eclipse Protocol.

The reckoning was no longer just about vengeance. It was about survival.

The alarms were a rhythmic, screeching assault on Darian’s nerves, but the roar of the Archon System in his skull was louder."Twenty minutes? Tavia, I need ten just to get through the security perimeter at the Financial Center!" Darian shouted over the din, grabbing his midnight-blue jacket from the back of the chair."Then you’d better start sprinting," Tavia hissed, her fingers blurring across the tablet as she tried to patch the bleeding code. "Raka didn't just find a back door; he’s turned the System into a feedback loop. If you don't hit the kill-switch at the main terminal during the conference, this ‘bomb’ doesn't just bankrupt him. It wipes out every server in Oakhaven. We're talking total digital blackout."Elora stood by the door, her face a mask of pale horror. "The press conference? Darian, you can't go out there. If Raka knows about the System, he's leading you into a slaughterhouse."Darian paused, his hand on the doorframe. He looked at Elora, the golden light in his e

The first light of dawn was a cruel, clinical grey that stripped the romance from the dusty loft. Darian stirred, the phantom heat of the night before still clinging to his skin, but the air in the room had turned freezing. He opened his eyes to see Elora standing by the nightstand, her silhouette trembling against the window. She wasn't looking at him. She was looking at the Archon tablet in her hands."Elora," Darian said, his voice gravelly with sleep. "Put that down.""Target Phase 2," she whispered, her voice sounding like it was coming from miles away. She turned the screen toward him, the golden light reflecting in her tear-streaked eyes. "Total liquidation of Vasantari Logistics. Systemic ruin of Elias Vasantari. That’s my father, Darian. That’s the man you told me you didn’t blame."Darian sat up, the bandage on his side pulling painfully. "It’s not what it looks like. It’s part of a larger sequence.""A sequence?" Elora let out a jagged, hollow laugh. "I stayed here. I let m

  • Chapter 5: Blood and Velvet

The black sedan skidded to a halt fifty yards from the rusted skeletal remains of Warehouse 14. Darian didn't wait for the car to fully stop before he kicked the door open. Rain began to fall, a cold, needle-like drizzle that blurred the neon glare of the city behind them."Darian, wait! Your stability is at fifty-eight percent!" Caelan shouted over the hum of the engine, his fingers flying across his tablet. "If you push into combat mode now, you might not come back from the feedback loop!"Darian didn't look back. "Keep the engine running, Caelan. If I’m not out in five minutes, get Mirella out of here and don’t look back.""That’s a suicide plan, and you know it!""Then it's a good thing I'm already a ghost," Darian muttered. He focused his gaze on the warehouse. The elevator doors hissed open to the damp, oil-slicked concrete of the Vasantari Manor’s delivery bay. The matte-black sedan was already there, its engine a low, predatory hum against the silence of the underground levels."Get in, get in!" Caelan’s voice barked through the earpiece. "Security just bypassed the elevator lockout. You have about thirty seconds before they start pouring into the garage."Darian didn't need to be told twice. He vaulted into the passenger seat, and before he could even click his seatbelt, Caelan slammed the car into gear. The tires screamed, leaving twin streaks of rubber as they tore toward the exit ramp."That went well," Caelan muttered, white-knuckling the steering wheel as they drifted around a concrete pillar. "You humiliated the city’s biggest shark, danced with his fiancé, and won fifty million dollars. I’m surprised they didn't just call an airstrike on us.""Raka’s too proud for an airstrike," Darian said, his breath hitching as the Archon Syste

Darian Wicandra adjusted the cuffs of his midnight-blue suit, the fabric catching the light of a thousand crystal shards dangling from the ceiling."How’s the feed, Caelan?" Darian murmured into his lapel, his voice barely a tremor in the air."Crystal clear, boss," Caelan’s voice crackled in his earpiece, sounding like he was chewing on something. "The specs on that suit are doing wonders for your silhouette. You look less like a vengeful ghost and more like a guy who owns a private island.
