The light swallowed Everett whole. His body spun through a tunnel of blinding blue, weightless and helpless, as though he were falling and flying at the same time.

His ears rang, and his chest burned, but he clung tightly to Kael’s arm, refusing to let go, then, just as suddenly, the light vanished.

He fell hard onto solid ground, snow and ice replaced by dirt and stone. He coughed violently, rolling onto his side, his chest heaving as he sucked in the new air.

It was damp and warm, heavy wit

The crowd of players began to mutter angrily. The fear in their hearts was morphing into a violent, desperate anger. When people are terrified of the end of the world, they look for someone to blame. They need a scapegoat. They need a reason. And Everett was the perfect reason. He was the anomaly. He was the man who refused the rules. "If we kill the virus, the computer fixes itself!" Garet yelled to the crowd. He raised his heavy iron hammer high into the air. "Kill the glitch!" another player screamed, pulling out a laser rifle. "Kill him and save the server!" Fifty players let go of the fences and the statues. They allowed the broken gravity to make them light, bounding across the town square like wild, angry animals. They raised their swords, their guns, and their axes. They were coming for Everett. Silas stepped in front of Everett. The brave sniper raised his rifle. He aimed it directly at Garet’s chest. "Back off!" Silas roared, his voice booming with military authority.

Everett stood up. He grabbed his heavy black greatsword. He did not walk carefully. He let go of control. He surrendered to his own body. Everett ran toward the front doors of the supermarket. His body jerked wildly. He ducked to the left. Two seconds later, a heavy wooden beam crashed through the spot where his head had been. He swung his sword blindly to the right. One second later, a falling piece of iron pipe hit the blade and bounced away safely. He was perfectly dodging things that had not fallen yet. He looked like a madman dancing to a silent song. But he was weaving a perfectly safe path through the collapsing building. "Step exactly where I step!" Everett yelled over his shoulder. Silas grabbed Rae’s hand. Lyra stayed close behind them. They followed Everett’s strange, jerky movements. They ran through the aisles of floating food. The gravity kept turning on and off. One step, they were heavy. The next step, they bounced ten feet into the air like astronauts on the moo

  • Chapter 543

Everett watched the bullet casing fall. But it did not hit the floor. The small piece of brass fell halfway to the ground, stopped in mid-air, and then slowly floated upward. It drifted past Silas's face and bumped gently against the ceiling. "Gravity," Lyra whispered in horror. She looked around the grocery store. Cans of synthetic soup were lifting off the metal shelves. They were floating through the air like bubbles underwater. A broken piece of glass rose from the floor and hovered in front of Everett’s face. Outside the window, the snow was falling upward. White snowflakes drifted from the ground up into the broken, neon sky. Everett felt his own boots getting light. He felt like he weighed nothing. If he pushed too hard, he would float away. "Rae!" Everett yelled, grabbing the edge of a heavy metal shelf to keep himself anchored to the floor. "What is Chrono-Degradation?! What is happening to the world?!"Rae was clutching her heavy laptop to her chest. She had wrapped he

  • Chapter 542

The freezing, burning hands of the static-husk squeezed Everett’s throat. Everett could not breathe. His vision was turning black. The monster’s face was a swirling mess of black and white television static. Bright red light poured out of its wide, empty mouth. "YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE LEVEL ONE!" the husk screamed again. The voice was a thousand broken machines grinding together. Everett had exactly 1 Health Point left. The hands on his neck were not squeezing his flesh. They were injecting raw deletion code directly into his veins. He felt his life slipping away. He felt the cold, empty void opening up to swallow him. He needed to swing his sword. He needed to cut the monster's arms off. Everett stared at his heavy black greatsword, the Null-Edge. It was lying on the dirty floor of the grocery store, three feet away from his hand. He was too weak to reach it. He was too slow. “Pick it up,” Everett thought desperately. But before the thought even finished forming in hi

  • Chapter 541

"He... he has no tag," Rae stuttered. Her hands started to shake. "Everett, he is not registered in the System. He is a ghost file."Everett slowly walked down Aisle Four. He approached the man in the blue shirt. The players from the town square had gathered outside the broken glass windows of the store. They were watching the famous hero. They whispered to each other, wondering what he was doing. Everett stopped three feet away from Mr. Henderson. The manager did not stop moving. He continued to pick up invisible cans and place them on the empty shelf. His eyes were completely glassy and blank. He stared straight ahead at the metal wall. "Mr. Henderson," Everett said. His deep voice echoed in the quiet, dusty aisle. The manager did not turn his head. He did not stop moving his hands. But his mouth opened. "Clean up on aisle four," Mr. Henderson said. His voice did not sound normal. It sounded like an old, scratched audio recording playing through a cheap speaker. It had a stra

"His cyborgs are marching out there," the warrior warned. "They are made of black metal and purple code. They capture anyone they find. They drag them away to the glass pods. We are trapped here. If we leave this glitched town, the cold and the cyborgs will kill us.""Stay near the fires," Everett commanded gently. "Do not fight them. I am going to end this."Everett began to walk through the crowded town square. Silas, Lyra, and Rae followed closely behind him. The players parted, making a wide path for them. Everett looked around the strange town. He saw the stone castle walls mixing with the old brick walls of the modern buildings. He saw a rusty yellow taxi car half-buried inside a stone pillar. The System code here was completely broken. Reality was tearing apart. They walked toward the center of the town. In the center was the massive, ruined grocery store. The glass windows were smashed. The automatic sliding doors were stuck open. Inside, the store was dark, lit only by fl
