The Empty Box

First Commercial Bank sat on a corner of downtown, quiet and unremarkable.

Dante and Naomi reached it at 4:47 AM. The streets were empty. Dawn still two hours away.

Naomi led him through a service entrance. Her hands trembled as she punched in the code. "I used to work here. Before Webb recruited me."

"You worked at a bank?"

"I was a security consultant. I know every blind spot."

They moved through the basement, past storage rooms and filing cabinets. The vault was a steel door with a single keypad.

Naomi entered the sequence. The lock clicked open.

The vault was small. Filled with safety deposit boxes of various sizes. Row 4. Box 427.

Dante pulled out the key she gave him. Fitted it into the lock.

The drawer slid open.

Empty.

Naomi's face went pale. "That's not possible. Gary gave me the key himself. He said the evidence was here."

Dante stared at the empty box. His mind raced. "Who else knew about this?"

"Nobody. Only Gary. And me."

"Webb knew."

Naomi shook her head. "I never told him. I swear."

Dante studied her face. The fear was real. But so was her betrayal record.

"Search the box," he said. "There might be something hidden."

Naomi reached in. Her fingers traced the edges. She found a seam. Pried it open.

A folded piece of paper fell out.

Dante caught it. Unfolded.

One line. Written in Gary's handwriting.

"Webb has eyes everywhere. The real evidence is in the one place he won't look."

Dante read it twice. "The one place he won't look. What does that mean?"

Naomi thought. "Gary used to talk about a safety deposit box at another bank. A backup. He said if anything happened to him, I'd know where to go."

"Did he tell you the location?"

"No. He said I'd figure it out."

Dante folded the note. His mind churned. Gary was always cryptic. Always thinking three moves ahead.

A backup bank. A location Naomi would figure out.

Then it hit him.

"The Watering Hole," he said. "Gary owned that building. The bar is a front."

Naomi's eyes widened. "Sully. The bartender. Gary trusted him."

"Let's go."

They left the vault, retracing their steps. The bank was still silent. No alarms. No guards.

Outside, the city was waking. Streetlights flickered. Distant traffic hummed.

Dante's phone buzzed.

He checked it. Unknown number.

Webb.

"I know you were at the bank," Webb said. "I know you found the note. Gary was clever, but not clever enough."

"What do you want?"

"Your surrender. You come to me. We end this. I let Naomi live."

Dante's grip tightened. "If I don't?"

"Then I make sure everyone you've ever known dies. Starting with her."

The line went dead.

Dante turned to Naomi. "He knows where you are."

"I'm dead if I stay with you."

"You're dead if you don't."

She met his eyes. "Then what's the play?"

Dante thought. The Watering Hole was their only lead. But Webb knew about it. Knew about Sully.

They had hours. Maybe less.

"Get to the Watering Hole," he said. "Find whatever Gary left. I'll draw Webb's attention."

"Alone?"

"Webb wants me. Not you. If I distract him, you have a window."

Naomi grabbed his arm. "You can't fight him alone. He has an army."

Dante pulled free. "I've been fighting alone my whole life. This is no different."

He walked away. Naomi's voice followed him.

"Dante. If you don't make it—"

"Then the evidence doesn't matter."

He turned a corner and disappeared into the early morning light.

Fifteen minutes later, he stood on a rooftop overlooking the Watering Hole. The bar was closed. Dark. Silent.

Naomi approached from the alley. She entered through the back door.

Dante watched. Waited.

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

His phone buzzed.

Naomi.

"I found it," she whispered. "Gary left a flash drive. Hidden in Sully's office. It has everything. Files. Names. Locations."

"Get out. Now."

"There's more. A list of every job Webb ever assigned you. Every target. They're all connected to Aldrich. To the network. The evidence is ironclad."

Dante's heart raced. "Take the drive and go. Find a safe house. I'll meet you in twenty-four hours."

"Dante—"

"Go. I'll draw them away."

He ended the call. Scanned the street.

A black sedan turned the corner. Followed by another. Webb's men.

Dante descended the fire escape. Hit the ground running.

Bullets chased him. He dove behind a dumpster, returned fire. One man dropped.

He sprinted down an alley, climbed a fence, and landed on a main street.

The sedans followed.

Dante ducked into a subway station. Ran through the turnstile. Boarded a train as the doors closed.

He pressed against the window. Watched the sedans skid to a halt outside.

Too close. Webb's net was tightening.

But Naomi had the evidence. The flash drive with everything.

Gary's sacrifice wasn't wasted.

Dante leaned back. His side burned. His heart raced.

He had twenty-four hours. Maybe less.

The train rattled through the tunnel.

He pulled out his phone. Webb's number was still on the screen.

He typed a message.

"I'll be at the Harbor Hotel. Suite 1400. Come find me."

He sent it.

Aldrich's trap. Webb's army. Viktor's mercenaries.

Dante was walking into the lion's den.

But he had a flash drive out there with the truth.

And he had nothing left to lose.
