The bullet tore through a man's throat, and Dante Cross didn't even blink. Dante is the finest cleaner the Agency has ever created—a ghost who erases bodies, witnesses, and entire operations without leaving a trace. Loyal to the system that shaped him, he believes one last mission will earn his freedom. He's wrong. The Agency never lets its weapons walk away. When a routine dead drop ends with two trusted contacts slaughtered inside a safehouse only he knew about, Dante realizes someone is erasing his trail while he's still alive. The betrayal isn't from an enemy but from someone who knows his real name, his retirement plan, and the location of the only person he still cares about. The truth is devastating: the order came from inside, and his own handler has marked him for death. As Dante digs deeper, he discovers his final assignment is far bigger than a cartel cleanup. It's the transfer of seven high-value prisoners who hold secrets capable of exposing a shadow network spanning three continents. If the prisoners disappear, the truth dies with them. If the operation fails, the organization vanishes into the shadows forever. Dante is the only man who knows both the transfer route and how the network truly operates. Then comes the final revelation. His handler hasn't just betrayed him—he has been manipulating him for years. Every mission, every kill, every "clean" operation was never about justice but about testing and perfecting a living weapon. Dante was never the Agency's cleaner. He was its experiment. Now hunted by the organization that created him, Dante must uncover the truth, protect the last person he loves, and survive long enough to destroy the system before it erases him forever. The countdown has already begun.

Chapter 1

The Dead Drop

The alley smelled like blood and wet garbage.

Dante Cross crouched behind a rusted dumpster, his Glock pressed against his thigh. Two bodies lay fifteen feet away. Both had their throats cut. Both were his people.

He counted the seconds since the last gunshot. Thirty-one. No more rounds. No footsteps.

The attacker was still out there.

Dante's shoulder throbbed where the bullet had grazed him an hour ago. He'd been running since the phone call came in. The dead drop was supposed to be clean. A simple pickup. Intelligence on the prisoner transfer route.

Instead, he found a slaughter.

He moved fast, keeping low, weapon raised. The alley was narrow, flanked by brick walls covered in faded graffiti. One exit ahead. One behind. He was trapped in the middle.

A shadow shifted on the fire escape above him.

Dante fired twice. The body dropped hard, smacking against metal before crashing to the concrete. He approached carefully, kicked the weapon away. Dead man. Late twenties. Tattoos on his neck. No ID.

Someone sent him. Someone knew the drop location.

Only Marcus Webb knew that.

Dante's handler. The man who recruited him six years ago. The man who told him this job would be his last.

His phone vibrated.

He didn't answer. Not yet.

Instead, he searched the dead man's pockets. Found a burner phone with one contact saved. No name. Just a string of numbers.

Dante memorized the sequence. Then he smashed the phone against the wall.

The other bodies were worse. The first was a courier named Danny. Young kid. Twenty-three. He'd been delivering the intel package. His fingers were still curled around the sealed envelope.

Dante peeled it open. Inside was a single photograph.

It showed the prisoner transfer convoy. Seven armored vehicles. A route map marked in red ink. And a face he recognized—Viktor Kral, the mercenary leader, standing next to a woman.

His sister. Sasha.

Dante pocketed the photograph.

The second body was a woman he'd known for two years. Ana. She'd been his backup, his eyes on the ground. Someone had cut her throat from behind.

She'd trusted him. He brought her into this.

His jaw tightened. The guilt was a dull ache he couldn't afford.

He heard boots on concrete. Multiple sets. Coming from the main street entrance.

Dante moved toward the fire escape. He climbed fast, pulling himself onto the rusted platform. The metal groaned under his weight. He pressed flat against the wall.

Three men entered the alley. Military gear. Silenced weapons. They fanned out, checking the bodies.

"Target's gone," one said. "He made us."

"Handler said he'd run." The second man crouched over Danny's body. "He always runs."

Dante's grip on the Glock tightened.

Webb sent them. The man who was supposed to protect him had marked him for death.

The third man looked up. His eyes scanned the fire escape.

Dante didn't wait. He fired three rounds. Two hit the third man in the chest. The others scrambled for cover.

He dropped from the fire escape, landing hard. His ankle twisted but held. He sprinted for the alley's exit.

More gunfire cracked behind him. Bullets ricocheted off brick.

He dove through the opening, rolled onto the sidewalk, and kept running. Blood dripped from his arm where a piece of shrapnel had cut him.

He didn't stop for six blocks.

Finally, he ducked into a subway station, bought a ticket with cash, and boarded the first train heading north.

The carriage was nearly empty. He sat in the back corner, watching the doors.

The photograph burned in his pocket. Viktor Kral. His sister. The convoy.

And the shadow network Webb was protecting.

Dante had spent years cleaning up other people's messes. Taking out targets. Eliminating threats. He believed he was serving a system that had rules.

But rules didn't protect you. Webb proved that.

The train rattled through the tunnel. Dante pulled out his phone. He stared at Webb's number.

He should call. Play along. Pretend he didn't know.

But Webb already made his move. The question was simple.

Would Dante take the bait—or start the war on his own terms?

He looked at the photograph again.

Sasha Kral's eyes stared back at him. Cold. Calculating.

She knew something Webb didn't want him to find.

And she was the key.

The train doors opened. Dante stood. He walked onto the platform and dialed Naomi Chen's number.

It rang twice.

"Dante?" Her voice was careful. "You're supposed to be dead."

"Not yet." He stepped into the crowd. "I need a meeting. Tonight."

Silence.

"I can't," she said. "They're watching me."

"Who's they?"

She hung up.

Dante pocketed the phone and kept walking.

The first betrayal was supposed to be the worst.

He was already wrong.

Would you kill the man who trained you—or the man who ordered it?
