The Montclair Heiress
The Montclair estate stood on the highest point of the city.
From a distance, it looked less like a family home and more like a government building. White stone walls surrounded the property, guarded gates stood at every entrance, and black cars came and went throughout the day.
The Montclairs had spent generations building their influence. They owned companies.
Hospitals.
Private schools.
Hotels.
News networks.
Construction firms.
Their name appeared on buildings all over the country. Politicians attended their dinners, Businessmen waited weeks for meetings with them, and when a Montclair wanted something, people usually found a way to make it happen.
But inside the estate, the family was divided.
Two factions.
One family.
Two ambitions.
On the eastern side of the dining hall sat the family of Lucien Montclair, the current head of the main household. Across from them sat the family of his younger brother, Darius Montclair. The two brothers had grown up under the same roof. They had received the same education. They had inherited the same name. But somewhere along the way, they became enemies. Darius had never forgiven Lucien for becoming their father's chosen successor, and Lucien had never forgiven Darius for spending years trying to take that position from him.
Their rivalry had survived marriages, business wars, elections, scandals, and even deaths. Now it had reached the next generation, and at the center of it was a woman neither side could completely control.
Vireya Montclair.
She sat at the far end of the table, reading a report while everyone else argued. She was twenty-six years old beautiful enough that strangers remembered her after meeting her only once. But beauty was never what made Vireya dangerous it was her mind. She had graduated near the top of her class, built a successful investment portfolio before she was twenty-four, and taken over one of the family's failing companies at twenty-five. Within eight months, she had turned it profitable.
Her cousins had never forgiven her for it. Especially Adrian Montclair, Darius's eldest son.
He leaned back in his chair and looked across the table. “You're doing it again.”
Vireya didn't look up. “Doing what?”
“Reading during dinner.”
“I didn't realize reading was against family rules.”
Adrian rolled his eyes. “Must everything become an argument with you?”
“No.” Vireya turned a page.
“Only the things that aren't worth arguing about.”
A few people at the table went silent. Her younger cousin nearly laughed but quickly covered her mouth.
Adrian's expression darkened.
Their uncle, Darius, finally spoke. “Vireya.”
She closed the folder. “Yes, Uncle?”
“You were asked to attend this dinner because there are matters concerning the family.”
“I know.”
“And yet you seem more interested in your own work.”
“My work is part of the family business.”
Darius stared at her. “Your father's company.”
Vireya met his eyes. “Still a Montclair company.”
That answer irritated him. Because she was right.
Darius leaned forward. “You seem to forget your position.”
Vireya smiled faintly. “No. I remember it very well.”
She glanced around the table. “That's why everyone keeps trying to remind me of it.”
Her father, Lucien, shifted uncomfortably beside her. He hated these dinners, he hated confrontation, and most of all, he hated seeing his daughter dragged into a war he had never been brave enough to fight.
Vireya noticed, she always noticed. She reached under the table and briefly touched her father's hand. It was a small gesture but it said everything. ‘I'm here. Don't worry.’
Her father looked at her and gave a faint smile. He had always been considered the weak Montclair. His father had expected him to marry into another powerful family and strengthen the clan's political connections. Instead, Lucien had done something unforgivable.
He fell in love.
Her mother had been an ordinary woman. No political family, no powerful surname, no wealthy relatives, nothing the Montclairs considered useful. Lucien married her anyway.
His father never forgave him.
Darius never forgot it. And when Lucien eventually inherited the family seat, Darius made it his life's mission to prove that his older brother had been a mistake.
Vireya had grown up watching it happen. She understood very early that her family didn't respect weakness. So she decided never to become weak.
After dinner, Vireya walked into her father's study.
Lucien was standing by the window. “You shouldn't have argued with Darius.”
Vireya closed the door behind her. “He started it. He always starts it, then maybe someone should finish it.”
Her father turned around. “Vireya.”
She sighed. “I know.”
Lucien sat behind his desk. For a moment, he looked exhausted. “You're becoming too involved.”
“I have to be.”
“No.” He shook his head. “You don't.”
She looked at him. “Dad, they're trying to take the company.”
“I know.”
“They've already moved three board members.”
“I know.”
“They've been pressuring our suppliers.”
“I know.”
“And you're still telling me not to get involved?”
Lucien remained silent.
Vireya walked closer.
“Why?”
Her father looked down. “Because I don't want you to become like them.”
Vireya's expression softened. “I'm not like them.”
“I know.”
“Then trust me.”
Lucien looked at his daughter there was pride in his eyes and fear. “You're too smart for your own good.”
Vireya smiled. “you say that like it's a bad thing. It is when you're surrounded by people who are waiting for you to fail.”
She sat across from him. “They've been waiting since I was a child.”
“And that's exactly why I want you to leave.”
Vireya frowned. “Leave?”
“After you marry.”
The room became quiet.
Vireya stared at him. “Marry who?”
Lucien hesitated. “The Valcero family has contacted us.”
Her expression changed. “The Valceros?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“They want an alliance.”
Vireya leaned back. “With whom?”
Her father didn't answer immediately.
That was enough she already knew. “Me?”
Lucien nodded.
Vireya gave a short laugh. “Of course.”
Her father frowned. “What does that mean?”
“It means Uncle Darius will love this.”
Lucien looked away.
Vireya understood immediately.
“This isn't about an alliance.”
“No.”
“It's about getting rid of me.”
Lucien didn't deny it. The Valcero family had offered a marriage and the Montclair family had accepted. But there was one important detail. They hadn't chosen one of the powerful Valcero heirs. They had chosen the man everyone considered worthless. Evren Valcero. A disgraced illegitimate son, a former prisoner, a man whose own family barely wanted him.
Vireya looked toward the window. “Who is he?”
Lucien handed her a file. “Evren Valcero.”
She opened it. The first page contained a photograph. A young man with dark hair and an unreadable expression.
Vireya studied the photograph. “He doesn't look crazy.”
Lucien gave her a tired look. “The family says he is unstable.”
“Families say a lot of things.” She continued reading.
Five years in prison. No significant achievements before his arrest, Illegitimate son, no official position within the Valcero organization, no political connections, no known business influence.
Vireya closed the file. “They're giving me the useless one.”
Her father flinched at the word.“They say he's harmless.”
“That means they're giving me someone they don't care about.”
Lucien remained silent.
Vireya looked at him.
“And you agreed.”
“I didn't have a choice.”
She stared at him for several seconds. Then she stood. “I'll meet him.”
Her father looked surprised. “You will?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Vireya picked up the file. “Because if they're trying to use him against me, I want to know exactly what they think they're sending me.”
She walked toward the door then stopped.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“If they're expecting me to be miserable because of this marriage…” She looked back, a small smile appeared on her face. “They're going to be disappointed.”
Across the city, another family was having a very different conversation. Evren stood alone on the balcony of the Valcero estate. The city lights stretched endlessly below him. His grandfather had told him everything he knew about the Montclairs. Powerful, Divided, Dangerous, and now they were offering him their daughter.
Evren leaned against the railing. His phone vibrated a message appeared.
Vireya Montclair.
‘Tomorrow.’
‘First meeting.’
Evren stared at the name. He had spent five years in Blackhaven learning how to understand people. He had learned to recognize fear behind arrogance, greed behind kindness, lies behind smiles. But there was one thing he had not learned. What happened when two people who had been underestimated their entire lives were placed in the same room?
He smiled. Tomorrow, he would find out.
And somewhere in the Montclair estate, Vireya was looking at the same file. Neither of them knew what the other had become. Neither knew what the marriage was really going to cost, and neither knew that the families arranging their future were making the biggest mistake of their lives.
