The Beast Returns

The first thing Evren noticed was the silence.

Not the silence of Blackhaven.

That silence had always felt dangerous. It was the kind that came before a fight, when men watched each other from across a room and waited for someone to make the first mistake.

This was different. This silence belonged to the Valcero estate.

Five years ago, Evren had left this place in handcuffs. Today, he returned through the same iron gates in a black sedan.

No handcuffs.

No guards holding his arms.

No one shouting that he was a criminal.

Still, he felt no satisfaction. He looked through the window at the enormous estate. The marble buildings stood exactly as he remembered them. The gardens were perfectly maintained. The fountains still ran beside the main entrance. Even the old oak tree near the eastern wing was still there. Everything looked untouched except him.

“Sir, we're here.”

Evren glanced at the driver. “Thank you.”

He opened the door. The moment his shoes touched the pavement, several servants near the entrance lowered their heads, some recognized him immediately, others stared for a second longer.

Five years was a long time. People changed. But apparently, some people remembered.

A young servant whispered something to another.

Evren heard it.

“That's him.”

“The illegitimate son?”

“He was in prison, wasn't he?”

“Five years.” Evren continued walking.

He didn't look at them. He had learned a long time ago that people talked more when they believed you weren't listening.

The front doors opened.

His grandfather was waiting inside.

Cassius had once told him that family was not always determined by blood.

Evren had understood the meaning only after he lost almost everyone. But there was one person who had never abandoned him. His grandfather.

The old man stood with a cane in one hand. He looked older, much older.

For a moment, Evren simply stared at him. Then his expression softened.

“Grandfather.”

The old man's lips trembled. “Evren.”

He walked forward.

Evren met him halfway.

His grandfather grabbed his shoulders and looked at his face as if checking whether he was really standing there. “You came back.”

“Yes.”

“You're thinner.”

“I ate enough.”

“Don't lie to me.”

Evren almost smiled. “I learned how to survive.”

His grandfather's eyes became wet. “I should have stopped them.”

Evren said nothing.

The old man lowered his head. “I knew you didn't do it.”

Those words hurt more than an accusation ever could Evren looked away. “It's over.”

“No,” his grandfather said quietly. “It isn't.”

Evren looked back at him.

The old man tightened his grip on his shoulder. “They took five years from you.”

“I still have the rest of my life.”

His grandfather studied him. There was something different in his grandson's eyes. Not anger, not sadness, something colder, something controlled.

“You've changed.”

Evren smiled faintly. “Five years can do that.”

Before his grandfather could answer, footsteps came from the staircase. Several members of the Valcero family entered the room.

Evren recognized them immediately. His uncle, his cousins, his older brother. And behind them stood the man who had once testified against him. His brother the person responsible for everything. Their eyes met. For several seconds, neither moved.

His brother looked uncomfortable.

Evren remembered that face.

Five years ago, that same man had stood in front of the family and claimed that Evren had committed the crime. He had cried, he had looked afraid, he had even called Evren his brother.

Now he couldn't meet his eyes.

“Evren,” his brother finally said.

Evren nodded. “Brother.”

The word is cold that made the room uncomfortable.

His uncle stepped forward. “You've been released.”

Evren looked at him. “Yeah.”

“You should be grateful the family allowed you to return.”

Evren's grandfather immediately turned. “Allowed?”

His uncle frowned. “You know what I mean.”

“I know exactly what you mean.”

The room fell silent.

Evren didn't intervene he simply watched. His grandfather had become smaller over the years, but his voice hadn't.

His uncle glanced at Evren again. “You should stay out of trouble this time.”

Evren gave a small nod and smirk. “I'll try.”

One of his cousins laughed.

It was quiet, but everyone heard it.

“Still the same.”

Evren looked at him.

The cousin stopped laughing. “What?”

“Nothing.” Evren turned away.

That was when another family member whispered,

“He really is different.”

His cousin scoffed. “Different? He's just a prisoner who got lucky enough to survive.”

Evren heard him.

He didn't respond. Five years ago, those words would have stayed in his mind. He would have gone to his room and replayed them for hours. Now? They meant nothing.

Blackhaven had taught him something more valuable than fighting. It had taught him that not every insult deserved an answer. Sometimes silence was more frightening.

His grandfather looked toward the family. “Enough.”

Then he turned to Evren. “Come with me.”

Evren followed him upstairs.

The old man's study hadn't changed. Books filled the walls, and a large wooden desk sat near the window. On one side was an old photograph. Evren and his grandfather.

He was seventeen in the picture. Still young, still smiling.

His grandfather noticed him looking at it. “I kept it.”

“I see that.”

“You didn't write much.”

“I wasn't allowed many things in prison.”

His grandfather's face hardened. “I tried to visit you.”

“I know.”

“They stopped me.”

“I know that too.”

The old man sat down. “Tell me the truth, Evren.”

Evren remained standing. “What truth?”

“What happened to you in Blackhaven?”

Evren was silent.

His grandfather studied him carefully. “You came back different.”

Evren looked toward the window. The gardens stretched below them.

“I met someone.”

“Someone?”

“An old man.”

“What did he teach you?”

Evren smiled slightly. “Too much.”

His grandfather waited.

Evren didn't elaborate. He didn't mention the first time Cassius had broken his nose. He didn't mention the months he spent learning to control his breathing. He didn't mention the nights when he couldn't sleep because someone was trying to kill him.

He didn't mention the books. The medicine, the strategy, the fighting, the names he had learned, the people who feared him, and he certainly didn't mention the name whispered through Blackhaven during his final year.

The Beast.

His grandfather finally asked, “Are you dangerous now?”

Evren looked at him. “No.”

The old man raised an eyebrow.

Evren smiled.

“Not to you.” For the first time that day, his grandfather laughed.

It was a quiet laugh but it was genuine.

Then his expression became serious. “There is something you need to know.”

Evren waited.

“The family has changed.”

“I noticed.”

“Your uncle has gained more influence.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

Evren walked toward the desk. “And my father?”

His grandfather hesitated.

“He is still trying to keep his position.”

“Trying?”

“He has lost support.”

Evren nodded slowly. That didn't surprise him, his father had never been cruel. But kindness without courage had never protected anyone in the Valcero family.

“And my brother?”

His grandfather looked away. “He controls part of the family's business now.”

Evren was quiet. His brother the man who had sent him to prison now running part of the family empire.

‘Interesting.’

His grandfather leaned back. “I want you to be careful.”

“I will.”

“They think you're still the same Evren.”

Evren looked at the photograph again. “Let them.”

His grandfather's eyes narrowed. “What are you planning?”

“Nothing.”

“That answer worries me.”

Evren smiled. “Then don't worry.”

That evening, the Valcero family gathered for dinner. Evren sat quietly at the far end of the table. The conversation continued around him.

Business.

Politics.

Money.

Alliances.

Nothing had changed, they spoke about him as if he wasn't there.

“His return could become a problem.”

“He has no position.”

“He has no allies.”

“He spent five years in prison.”

“He should be grateful we're allowing him to stay.”

Evren continued eating.

His brother finally looked at him. “You don't seem interested in the family business anymore.”

Evren put down his fork. “I haven't been invited.”

His uncle smiled. “You're not exactly qualified.”

Evren looked at him. “Perhaps.”

The answer disappointed them. They wanted anger, they wanted resentment. they wanted the old Evren. The one they could provoke, the one who would lose control. Instead, they found a man who seemed completely uninterested in proving himself.

His grandfather watched him from across the table he knew better. Evren wasn't uninterested, he was observing every person at the table, every alliance, every hesitation, every lie, every weakness.

Blackhaven had taught him to read people before they realized they were being watched. His brother's fingers tightened around his glass whenever certain subjects were mentioned. His uncle avoided discussing one particular company, one cousin kept checking his phone, another kept looking at the door.

Evren noticed everything.

Then his uncle spoke. “There is another matter.”

Everyone became quiet.

“The Montclair family has approached us.”

Evren looked up. For the first time that evening, his expression changed.

“Montclair?”

His uncle nodded. “They want an alliance.”

His grandfather's face became unreadable. “What kind of alliance?”

“A marriage.”

Several members of the family exchanged glances.

Evren leaned back.

His uncle looked directly at him.

“Their daughter.”

Evren didn't speak.

His brother suddenly smiled. It was the first genuine smile Evren had seen from him all evening. “You mean Vireya Montclair?”

His uncle nodded. “Yes.”

Someone laughed quietly. “Why would they want her married to a Valcero?”

His uncle's smile widened. “They don't want one of our important sons.”

The room became silent.

Evren already understood.

His uncle looked at him. “They want Evren.”

His grandfather's expression hardened.

Evren remained completely still.

His brother laughed. “Of course.”

Everyone knew what the marriage meant.

The Montclair family had chosen the weakest Valcero, and the Valcero family was perfectly willing to give him away. A useless son, a disgraced prisoner, a lunatic, a disposable husband.

Evren looked down at his untouched glass. For some reason, he found the situation almost amusing. Five years ago, he had been sent to prison because his family wanted to sacrifice him. Five years later, they were preparing to sacrifice him again. Only this time, they had no idea what they were handing over.

His grandfather looked at him. “Evren, you don't have to agree.”

Evren finally raised his eyes. “What's her name again?”

“Vireya Montclair.”

Evren repeated the name quietly. “Vireya.” He leaned back. “Fine.”

Everyone stared at him, his brother's smile disappeared. “You're agreeing?”

Evren looked around the table. “Yes.”

His uncle frowned. “Just like that?”

Evren smiled. “Why not?”

Nobody understood. They thought he was still the same useless man, they thought they were deciding his future. They didn't know that Evren Valcero had spent five years learning how to survive in a place where survival was considered impossible. They didn't know that the man sitting quietly at their table was no longer the boy they had betrayed, and they certainly didn't know that the Beast had finally come home.
