Benjamin slowed his steps as he approached the location Elise had sent.

From the outside, the place looked modest. A simple signboard hung above the entrance, its red lettering slightly faded at the edges. Warm light spilled through the glass windows, revealing a quiet interior with a handful of occupied tables.

It felt… normal.

He paused for a second, studying it.

A Chinese restaurant.

Not particularly popular and not high-end either. Just somewhere in between. The kind of place students visit

The restaurant owner stood still for a moment after hearing the waiter’s explanation. His eyes moved from the waiter… to Benjamin. And then, something in his expression changed.A flicker of recognition passed through his gaze. He looked again. This time more carefully.Yes.He knew this young man. Not by name however but by presence. He had seen him before. Many times, in fact. The memory came back slowly but clearly. The quiet young man who would occasionally walk in, place an order, wait patiently without causing any trouble, and then leave with his takeaway.Always calm... Always polite. Never loud and never difficult. It had been a while since he last saw him, but that did not erase the impression.A regular customer. And more importantly… A decent one. The owner’s expression softened slightly. He turned fully toward Benjamin now. There was no irritation in his face or any form of suspicion.Only a calm understanding.“I see,” he said quietly. Then he turned slightly toward the w

Ryan and Rose burst into an even louder laughter. This time, there was no attempt to hold it back as Ryan bent slightly at the waist, one hand resting on the edge of the table as his shoulders shook. His laughter was open and unrestrained, the kind that demanded attention whether people wanted to give it or not.Rose wasn’t any better either. She covered her mouth at first, but that did nothing to stop the sound. Her laughter spilled out freely, sharp and mocking, her eyes fixed on Benjamin as if she had just witnessed the most ridiculous scene of the day.And in a way, to them, she had.Around them, the atmosphere changed completely now. Nearby diners slowed their movements as their conversations dipped. Heads turned openly now. There was no more pretending not to watch. Everyone could see it.A young man standing beside his table. A bill unpaid. Two others laughing at him without restraint. It didn’t take much for people to form conclusions.Ryan finally straightened up, though the

The waiter stopped beside their table.“Sir?” he asked politely.Benjamin looked up at him calmly.“The bill,” Benjamin said. The waiter nodded immediately.“Yes, sir.”He pulled out a small handheld device and tapped a few times, briefly glancing at the table as if confirming the items ordered. There were quite a number of dishes. More than what one would typically expect for two people but within a few seconds, the waiter looked back up.“The total comes to one thousand and thirty-four dollars and fifty-two cents,” he said clearly. “$1034.52.”The number hung lightly in the air.Elise blinked once. She had not really paid attention to how much everything would cost while ordering.Ryan’s lips curved slightly. Rose’s eyes flickered with interest. Benjamin, however, did not react.“Alright,” he said simply. Then he pushed his chair back and stood up. The movement was calm and unhurried. He slipped a hand into his pocket and then into the other. He began going through them casually. Th

Benjamin said nothing. He simply continued eating his meal. His movements were calm and steady, as though the voices around him were nothing more than background noise. He picked up another piece of food with his chopsticks, brought it to his mouth, and chewed slowly. There was no rush.No reaction. No acknowledgment. It was just as if Ryan and Rose were not even standing there. That alone irritated them more than any insult could have.Ryan’s smirk lingered, but his eyes narrowed slightly. He had expected something. A response, a reaction… anything that would validate the situation he was trying to create. But Benjamin gave him nothing.Across from him, Elise noticed it too. She glanced briefly at Benjamin, then back at the two standing beside their table. There was a slight change in her expression. She understood what he was doing. Or rather… what he was not doing. And strangely, it made the entire situation feel even more one-sided.Rose clicked her tongue lightly as her eyes drop

The moment Rose noticed them, her lips curled upward into a sharp, knowing smile. There was no hesitation in her steps as she turned away from the counter and walked straight toward their table, her heels clicking lightly against the tiled floor.Benjamin saw her coming.Of course she would. There was something about Rose that always thrived on attention, especially when she believed she held the upper hand. And right now, with Ryan by her side and whatever illusion of status she thought she had gained, she walked with even more confidence than usual. She stopped right beside their table, arms folded loosely as her gaze swept over the dishes in front of them.“Oh,” she said, dragging the word out as if savoring it. “So this is where he brings you now?”Her tone was light, almost playful. But the contempt beneath it was clear as day. She then let out a small laugh, shaking her head as though she had just witnessed something amusing.Elise didn’t even look up at first. She just picked u

He had been here before and more than a few times.Back when things were… different. Back when Rose had still been part of his life. Back when every outing required him to carefully calculate how much he could afford to spend without falling short on something else.He remembered standing outside this very entrance the last time they came here, checking his balance befo
