Lucien Legion stared at the paper in his hand until the words stopped making sense and started making sense all over again.

NO BIOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIP.

Fifteen years. He had raised her for fifteen years and she wasn't his.

His hands shook on the steering wheel. The parking lot outside the lab blurred through the windshield like the whole world had been dunked in water.

He thought about Stacy. About the day they met at twenty four, about the wedding, about believing for sixteen straight years that he had built something real.

Stacy had come from money. An only child, spoiled rotten by a family that owned half of downtown. When Lucien Legion met her she was nobody, just another actress getting rejected at every audition in town. He was the one who paid rent. He was the one who told her she'd make it someday when nobody else believed her.

Then eight years ago a show blew up and suddenly she was the biggest name in the country. Magazine covers. Endorsement deals. A face nobody could scroll past.

And Lucien Legion had thought he was the luckiest man alive.

He laughed out loud in the empty car, a short broken sound. "Luckiest man alive," he said to nobody. "What a joke."

He drove until he saw a bar sign glowing red on the corner, and he pulled in without deciding to.

Inside, he dropped into a booth in the back and ordered whiskey. Then another. Then he stopped counting.

The bartender leaned over the counter, wiping a glass. "You want to slow down, buddy?"

"Nope." Lucien Legion's jaw was tight, his eyes glassy already. "Keep them coming."

Somewhere a speaker crackled and a country song started up, something about a cheating heart telling on you. Lucien Legion snorted and lifted his glass toward the ceiling like he was toasting the song itself.

"You hear that, Stacy? Even the jukebox knows."

He drank until the room started tilting sideways, until his own hands looked like they belonged to somebody else. By the time he tried to stand, his knees folded like wet cardboard and he had to grab the booth to keep from going down.

A voice, a woman's voice, came from somewhere close. "Sir, you can't drive like this. Let me help you."

Lucien Legion squinted at the blur in front of him. Long hair. A shoulder under his arm, holding him up.

His brain, soaked and furious, only had room for one name. "Stacy," he mumbled, voice thick and slurred. "There you are."

She didn't correct him. She just kept walking him toward the door, his weight dragging her sideways with every step.

Outside, cold air hit his face and for one second the world came into focus, sharp and cruel.

"Why," he said, stopping dead in the middle of the sidewalk, swaying. "Why'd you lie to me for sixteen years?"

No answer. Just her hands trying to pull him forward.

"You raised her like she was mine." His voice cracked and turned ugly in the same breath. "You let me hold her when she was a baby. You let me walk her to her first day of school. And the whole time you were laughing at me behind my back like I was some dog too dumb to notice the leash was fake."

He wasn't looking at her face. He wasn't looking at anything real.

"Say something," he snapped, grabbing her wrist harder than he meant to. "You've got a mouth on every red carpet in this country, so use it now. Who was he? Who'd you spread your legs for while I was working doubles to pay for this life you're living?"

Still nothing. She got the car door open and shoved him into the passenger seat, his head lolling against the window.

"Silent as a snake," he muttered, eyes falling shut. "That's what you are. A pretty little snake in a five thousand dollar dress."

The car started moving. Streetlights slid across his closed eyelids in orange streaks.

"I gave you everything," he said, quieter now, the anger folding into something rawer underneath it. "Fifteen years, and you made me a fool in front of my own daughter."

His head rolled to the side, chin dropping to his chest.

"Lies," he whispered. "It was all lies."

The car pulled into an underground garage, tires echoing off concrete. When it stopped, the woman came around and hauled him out by the arm, his full weight nearly dropping her to the ground before she caught her balance again.

Lucien Legion's eyes cracked open just enough to see gray concrete pillars and dim yellow lighting.

"Another one of your little hideouts," he slurred, laughing without any humor in it at all. "Bought with money I helped you make. Guess a rat always finds a new hole to hide in."

She didn't answer. She just kept dragging him toward the elevator, his boots scraping uselessly against the floor.

By the time the door of the apartment shut behind them, Lucien Legion couldn't feel his own legs anymore. He felt himself falling, felt carpet rise up to catch him, felt a body land half beside him, half under him, both of them too exhausted and too far gone to do anything but lie there.

The last thought that moved through Lucien Legion's mind before the darkness swallowed him whole was simple and absolute.

She wasn't Stacy.

And then there was nothing at all.

Chloe showed up at Lucien Legion's apartment two nights later, unannounced, her eyes swollen from crying the whole drive over. He took one look at her face and pulled her inside without a single question, sitting her down at the kitchen table before he asked anything at all."What happened?" He crouched in front of her chair, scanning her face, her arms, checking for anything visible the way sixteen years of parenting had trained him to check first and ask questions second."Mom slapped me." She said it flatly, like saying it fast might make it hurt less. "I asked her if there was another man. If that's why she was scared of your test."Lucien Legion went very still, his jaw tightening. "She hit you?""It doesn't matter right now." Chloe pulled her phone out of her pocket, her hands shaking slightly as she opened the photo she'd taken of the screen before Stacy walked back in. "This matters more."She turned the phone toward him. Lucien Legion took it carefully, reading the screen twi

  • 17: Name On The Phone

Stacy fled the study a few minutes after the slap, muttering something about getting Chloe ice for her cheek, her hands still trembling as she disappeared down the hallway toward the kitchen. Chloe stood alone by the desk, her face still stinging, staring at the spot where her mother had been standing.Stacy's phone sat on the desk beside the abandoned contracts, screen lit up from a notification, still unlocked from whatever she'd been doing before Chloe walked in.Chloe knew she shouldn't touch it. She knew it the same way she knew she shouldn't have asked the question that got her slapped in the first place, and she picked it up anyway, her heart hammering, some reckless, hurt part of her past caring what she was supposed to do anymore. She opened the messages first, scrolling fast before her nerve failed her. Most of it was ordinary, publicists, stylists, a group chat with two other actresses planning a charity gala. Then she saw it, a name near the top of the recent conversations

  • 16: The Hidden Conversation

Chloe waited three days before she found the right moment, a quiet Saturday afternoon when the penthouse was empty except for her and Stacy, no assistants hovering, no phone calls scheduled. She found her mother in the study going through a stack of contracts, reading glasses pushed up into her hair, a cup of coffee gone cold beside her."Mom." Chloe stood in the doorway, her arms crossed tight over her chest, working up the nerve she'd been building for days. "Can I ask you something?""Of course, sweetheart." Stacy didn't look up right away, still scanning a page. "What is it?""What happened before I was born?" Chloe watched her mother's pen stop moving mid signature. "I heard you on the phone once, a while back. You said something about protecting the family name. About making sure nothing from before ever got out. What did you mean?"Stacy set the pen down slowly and finally looked up, her face carefully arranged into something warm and puzzled, though her eyes had gone sharp und

  • 15: A Father Without Blood

Lucien Legion did not look away from her question, even though every instinct in him wanted to soften it, wanted to find some gentler shape to put around an answer this important."Yes." He said it plainly, without hesitation, watching her face for the moment it would land. "If the test comes back and says no, I would still call you my daughter. I'd call you that for the rest of my life."Chloe's breath caught, something between a sob and disbelief. "You mean that? You're not just saying it because I'm upset?""I mean it." He reached out slowly, giving her every chance to pull away if she needed to, and rested a hand gently on her shoulder when she didn't. "Blood is one way people end up in a family. It's not the only way. It was never the only way, not for us. I was in that delivery room the night you were born. I was the first person to hold you. I've spent sixteen years being your father in every way that matters, and a lab report doesn't get to erase that just because it's printed

  • 14: Painful Decisions

Lucien Legion ended the call with Donald Mccallister and set his phone down on the kitchen table, his jaw still tight from the last exchange. He didn't hear the front door until it was already closing, and by the time he turned around, Chloe was standing in the hallway with her backpack half slipped off one shoulder, school books still in her arms. She wasn't moving. Her face had gone pale and still in a way that made his stomach drop before either of them said a word."Chloe." He stood up too fast, the chair scraping against the floor. "How long were you standing there?""Long enough." Her voice came out small, nothing like her usual easy chatter. "I heard you talking about a blood test. About numbers not matching. About whether you're my..." She stopped, unable to finish the sentence, her books sliding out of her arms and landing on the floor with a soft thud neither of them moved to pick up.Lucien Legion crossed the room slowly, the way he'd approach a frightened patient, hands lo

  • 13: Unverified Truth

Lucien Legion called Donald Mccallister's office the next morning and told the assistant it was urgent, personal, and that he'd wait as long as he had to for a callback. The callback came within the hour, Donald Mccallister's voice carrying the same smooth caution it always did, though something underneath it sounded thinner than usual."Mr. Legion. I trust you received the results.""I did." Lucien Legion sat at his kitchen table, the photograph from the anonymous sender pulled up on his laptop screen, sitting beside the scanned copy of his official paperwork. "I also received something else. A photograph of the original sample label."Silence on the line, brief but unmistakable."I don't follow." Donald Mccallister recovered quickly, but not quickly enough."The intake number on that label doesn't match the number on the report your lab sent me." Lucien Legion kept his voice level, the same controlled tone he used delivering hard news to families in a hospital hallway. "It also does
