Lucien Legion called Donald Mccallister's office the next morning and told the assistant it was urgent, personal, and that he'd wait as long as he had to for a callback. The callback came within the hour, Donald Mccallister's voice carrying the same smooth caution it always did, though something underneath it sounded thinner than usual.

"Mr. Legion. I trust you received the results."

"I did." Lucien Legion sat at his kitchen table, the photograph from the anonymous sender pulled up on his laptop screen, sitting beside the scanned copy of his official paperwork. "I also received something else. A photograph of the original sample label."

Silence on the line, brief but unmistakable.

"I don't follow." Donald Mccallister recovered quickly, but not quickly enough.

"The intake number on that label doesn't match the number on the report your lab sent me." Lucien Legion kept his voice level, the same controlled tone he used delivering hard news to families in a hospital hallway. "It also doesn't match the number on the receipt I was handed the day I gave the sample. Two different numbers, Mr. Mccallister, for the same swab."

"There's likely a simple explanation." Donald Mccallister's voice smoothed back over, practiced and easy. "Administrative errors happen more often than people realize. Labs process hundreds of samples a week, numbers get transposed, forms get duplicated. I'll have someone at Ridgeline look into it, but I wouldn't read anything sinister into a clerical mix up."

"A clerical mix up." Lucien Legion repeated it slowly, letting the words sit in the air between them. "See, that's the part I keep getting stuck on. Chain of custody numbers aren't like a phone number somebody misdials. They're generated specifically so nobody can quietly swap one sample for another without leaving a mark. That's the entire point of the system, Mr. Mccallister. You told me that yourself, standing in that lobby, when you were the one insisting how thorough Ridgeline is."

"I'm aware of what I said." A flicker of something sharper slipped through the polish now, gone almost as fast as it appeared. "I'm telling you, systems fail. People make mistakes. It happens."

"Two numbers, both tied to my sample, both officially documented, and they don't match." Lucien Legion leaned forward, elbows on the table. "That's not a system failing on its own, Mr. Mccallister. Somebody has to touch a keyboard for that to happen. Somebody with access, and a reason."

"You're speculating." Donald Mccallister's tone hardened, defensive now instead of smooth. "You're building an entire theory out of a typo."

"Am I." Lucien Legion let a beat pass. "Funny, because a lab technician doesn't usually go through the trouble of manually flagging a file for an administrative hold over a typo either."

That landed exactly the way Lucien Legion intended it to. He heard it in the sudden stillness on the other end of the line, the absence of an immediate, practiced response.

"I don't know where you're getting your information." Donald Mccallister's voice had gone tight and careful, each word chosen like it might be recorded somewhere. "But I'd be very cautious about repeating unverified claims, Mr. Legion. Especially in the middle of an already contentious divorce. The last thing either of you needs is more noise in the press."

"There it is." Lucien Legion almost laughed, though nothing about the situation was funny. "Every single time I bring up the file, you find a way to steer it back toward the divorce. Back toward Stacy's exposure, Stacy's reputation, what's good for Stacy. I haven't once heard you say you want to know what actually happened to that sample."

"Because what actually happened doesn't change the outcome." Donald Mccallister's composure slipped further, his words coming faster now, less measured. "The test result is what it is. Chloe isn't your biological daughter. Whatever clerical issue exists in the paperwork doesn't alter that fact."

"Maybe not." Lucien Legion's voice dropped, quieter now, more dangerous for it. "But it does raise the question of what somebody was trying to change it into before it came back the way it did. And it raises a bigger question, one I keep asking myself every time I get you on the phone."

"And what question is that." Donald Mccallister asked it like a man already bracing for the answer.

"Why do you sound more interested in protecting Stacy than in finding out the truth?" Lucien Legion let the silence stretch after it, giving the question room to sit there, unanswered. "You're her lawyer, Mr. Mccallister. Fine. But somewhere along the way this stopped being about representing her interests in a divorce and started looking a lot more like covering for something. So which is it?"

Chloe showed up at Lucien Legion's apartment two nights later, unannounced, her eyes swollen from crying the whole drive over. He took one look at her face and pulled her inside without a single question, sitting her down at the kitchen table before he asked anything at all."What happened?" He crouched in front of her chair, scanning her face, her arms, checking for anything visible the way sixteen years of parenting had trained him to check first and ask questions second."Mom slapped me." She said it flatly, like saying it fast might make it hurt less. "I asked her if there was another man. If that's why she was scared of your test."Lucien Legion went very still, his jaw tightening. "She hit you?""It doesn't matter right now." Chloe pulled her phone out of her pocket, her hands shaking slightly as she opened the photo she'd taken of the screen before Stacy walked back in. "This matters more."She turned the phone toward him. Lucien Legion took it carefully, reading the screen twi

Stacy fled the study a few minutes after the slap, muttering something about getting Chloe ice for her cheek, her hands still trembling as she disappeared down the hallway toward the kitchen. Chloe stood alone by the desk, her face still stinging, staring at the spot where her mother had been standing.Stacy's phone sat on the desk beside the abandoned contracts, screen lit up from a notification, still unlocked from whatever she'd been doing before Chloe walked in.Chloe knew she shouldn't touch it. She knew it the same way she knew she shouldn't have asked the question that got her slapped in the first place, and she picked it up anyway, her heart hammering, some reckless, hurt part of her past caring what she was supposed to do anymore. She opened the messages first, scrolling fast before her nerve failed her. Most of it was ordinary, publicists, stylists, a group chat with two other actresses planning a charity gala. Then she saw it, a name near the top of the recent conversations

  • 16: The Hidden Conversation

Chloe waited three days before she found the right moment, a quiet Saturday afternoon when the penthouse was empty except for her and Stacy, no assistants hovering, no phone calls scheduled. She found her mother in the study going through a stack of contracts, reading glasses pushed up into her hair, a cup of coffee gone cold beside her."Mom." Chloe stood in the doorway, her arms crossed tight over her chest, working up the nerve she'd been building for days. "Can I ask you something?""Of course, sweetheart." Stacy didn't look up right away, still scanning a page. "What is it?""What happened before I was born?" Chloe watched her mother's pen stop moving mid signature. "I heard you on the phone once, a while back. You said something about protecting the family name. About making sure nothing from before ever got out. What did you mean?"Stacy set the pen down slowly and finally looked up, her face carefully arranged into something warm and puzzled, though her eyes had gone sharp und

Lucien Legion did not look away from her question, even though every instinct in him wanted to soften it, wanted to find some gentler shape to put around an answer this important."Yes." He said it plainly, without hesitation, watching her face for the moment it would land. "If the test comes back and says no, I would still call you my daughter. I'd call you that for the rest of my life."Chloe's breath caught, something between a sob and disbelief. "You mean that? You're not just saying it because I'm upset?""I mean it." He reached out slowly, giving her every chance to pull away if she needed to, and rested a hand gently on her shoulder when she didn't. "Blood is one way people end up in a family. It's not the only way. It was never the only way, not for us. I was in that delivery room the night you were born. I was the first person to hold you. I've spent sixteen years being your father in every way that matters, and a lab report doesn't get to erase that just because it's printed

Lucien Legion ended the call with Donald Mccallister and set his phone down on the kitchen table, his jaw still tight from the last exchange. He didn't hear the front door until it was already closing, and by the time he turned around, Chloe was standing in the hallway with her backpack half slipped off one shoulder, school books still in her arms. She wasn't moving. Her face had gone pale and still in a way that made his stomach drop before either of them said a word."Chloe." He stood up too fast, the chair scraping against the floor. "How long were you standing there?""Long enough." Her voice came out small, nothing like her usual easy chatter. "I heard you talking about a blood test. About numbers not matching. About whether you're my..." She stopped, unable to finish the sentence, her books sliding out of her arms and landing on the floor with a soft thud neither of them moved to pick up.Lucien Legion crossed the room slowly, the way he'd approach a frightened patient, hands lo
