Chapter 1

The Final Spear

The sky was no longer blue. It was filled with cracks, like a giant mirror that had been shattered into countless pieces.

Below it, the world was in ruins.

The tall buildings that once showed the greatness of human civilization had been reduced to broken towers. Rivers of molten metal flowed through the remains of cities, and the ground shook under the weight of a war that had lasted for generations.

Kaevryn stood alone in the wasteland.

He was the last living guardian of humanity.

He slowly breathed out, and a cloud of blood escaped his mouth. His messy golden-blond hair was covered in dust and dried blood. His clothes were torn, and his body was covered in wounds.

Yet his crimson eyes still burned with determination.

Those eyes had witnessed the rise and fall of human civilization. They had watched countless warriors die and entire cities disappear. Now, they were looking at a world that had almost nothing left to offer.

In his right hand, he held a long, double-headed golden spear.

The weapon was covered in scratches and cracks. The ancient runes carved into its surface flickered weakly, as though they might go dark at any moment.

Still, Kaevryn kept its sharp point aimed at the horizon.

He was the last survivor of humanity's Vanguard.

The final Spearmaster.

Memories of the dead filled his mind.

"Hold the line, Kaevryn!"

He could still hear General Vane shouting those words during the Siege of the Burning Straits. It had been one of the many battles that had shaped the course of the war.

He remembered the warriors who had fought beside him. He remembered their promises, their laughter, and the confidence they had shown when they believed humanity still had a chance.

One by one, they had fallen.

Some died protecting civilians. Others sacrificed everything to hold back enemies far stronger than themselves. Many had entered battle believing they would return, only to leave behind nothing but their names and memories.

Kaevryn had survived them all.

For 890 years, humanity had struggled against the invasion that changed the course of its history. The invaders had brought forces that humans could barely understand, and the discovery of Aether had given humanity a chance to resist.

Through generations of research, sacrifice, and battle, humans had learned to cultivate. They developed techniques that allowed them to move faster than sound, shatter mountains, and command powers that their ancestors would have considered impossible.

But their progress had never been enough.

Even after centuries of fighting, humanity still did not understand why the invasion had begun or what truly lay behind the countless enemies that threatened their existence.

They had fought monsters, powerful beings from beyond their world, and horrors that emerged from tears in space.

Yet the source of the disaster remained a mystery.

Now, humanity was on the edge of extinction.

A wave of exhaustion suddenly struck Kaevryn. His knees nearly gave way, forcing him to lean against his spear.

He coughed violently, tasting blood in his mouth.

His Aether reserves were almost empty. The golden energy that had once flowed through his body like a river was now little more than a weak stream.

The spear techniques that had earned him the title of Sun-Slayer were becoming difficult to perform. Even lifting his weapon required an effort that would once have seemed ridiculous to him.

He had reached heights that few cultivators could imagine, but he was not invincible.

His body was failing.

Then the sky shattered.

There was no explosion. No thunderous roar.

The cracks simply spread until the sky itself seemed to break apart.

Something began to descend from the opening.

At first, Kaevryn could not make out its shape. It looked like a shadow, yet it was unlike anything he had encountered before.

The moment it appeared, the surrounding space began to change.

Broken stones rose into the air before crumbling into dust. The ground twisted beneath its presence, and the passage of time seemed to slow.

Kaevryn narrowed his crimson eyes.

Throughout his long life, he had faced Apex-tier Abominations, Void Monarchs, and Astral Beings. He had studied their movements, learned how their energy worked, and discovered ways to defeat opponents who were far stronger than ordinary cultivators.

But this thing was different.

He could not sense any Aether within it.

The power surrounding the entity did not follow the rules he knew. He could not understand how it existed, much less how to fight it.

Its presence alone placed unbearable pressure on his body. It felt as though the very world was rejecting his existence.

What are you?

Kaevryn clenched his teeth.

Have we finally reached the source of everything? Is this what has been waiting beyond?

The entity gave no answer.

It showed no anger, excitement, or hatred. It simply hung above the ruined world, seemingly indifferent to the last human standing beneath it.

That indifference frightened Kaevryn more than any roar could have.

After all the wars humanity had fought, after all the lives sacrificed to protect their civilization, this being seemed to regard their entire struggle as something unimportant.

Kaevryn slowly straightened his back.

There was no army behind him. No reinforcements were coming. No hidden force remained to protect the last survivors.

If he fell here, humanity's story would end.

He tightened his grip around his spear.

No.

He had watched too many people die to give up now.

He knew he could not win a prolonged battle. His body was damaged, his Aether was nearly depleted, and his weapon was close to breaking.

But he could still fight.

He would not surrender simply because the enemy was stronger. He would not allow the sacrifices of his fallen comrades to become meaningless without making one final stand.

"If this is the end," he whispered, his voice rough from exhaustion, "then I'll make sure you remember humanity."

He gathered the last of his Aether.

Golden light flowed through his arms and into the spear. The ancient runes on its surface began to shine, growing brighter with every passing moment.

Then something moved deep within his chest.

Kaevryn froze.

It was not his cultivation core. That core had been damaged by the countless battles he had fought, and its remaining power was barely enough to keep him standing.

This presence came from somewhere deeper.

A strange, stone-like fragment that had existed within his spirit origin since childhood.

For as long as he could remember, it had remained silent. Powerful cultivators had examined it. Scholars had studied it. Even those who possessed knowledge of ancient relics had failed to identify its origin.

Nothing had ever awakened it.

Until now.

The core began to vibrate.

A strange pulse spread through Kaevryn's chest.

The energy that followed was unlike anything he had encountered during his centuries of cultivation. It was neither golden Aether nor the dark energy associated with the void.

Its colour was unfamiliar, and its presence carried a strange feeling of age—as though it had existed long before the laws governing the universe had taken shape.

For a brief moment, the battlefield became silent.

The wind stopped.

The dust hanging in the air ceased to move.

Kaevryn stared at his chest, unable to understand what was happening.

Then his consciousness touched something beyond the fragment.

For an instant, he sensed an immense presence that seemed to stretch beyond the limits of his understanding. The power he felt was so vast that he could not begin to measure it.

Compared to that presence, the entity above him seemed almost insignificant.

Kaevryn's heart pounded.

What is this thing?

He had carried the Shattered Core for most of his life, yet he knew nothing about it.

Why had it remained silent for so long?

Why was it awakening now, at the very end?

Before he could find an answer, the entity above him moved.

Although it had shown no interest in Kaevryn before, its attention was now fixed on the energy emerging from his chest.

The space around him began to bend.

The unfamiliar energy flowed through his body, passing through his damaged meridians and gathering around his spear. It was far beyond anything he could control, yet it did not immediately destroy him.

Instead, the boundary between the battlefield and something else began to weaken.

Kaevryn raised his golden spear.

Primordial light wrapped around the weapon, hiding its damaged surface beneath a brilliant glow.

He did not understand the power flowing through him. He did not know what the Shattered Core intended to do.

But he knew he could not let this opportunity pass.

"For humanity!"

With the last of his strength, Kaevryn thrust his spear toward the entity.

The moment the weapon moved, the Shattered Core released another pulse.

The energy spread across the battlefield, reaching the cracks in the sky. The two forces seemed to react to each other, causing the surrounding space to shake violently.

Kaevryn's eyes widened.

He had expected an attack.

Instead, the energy expanded beyond his control.

Light spread across the ruined world, swallowing the broken buildings, the dead land, and the entity descending from the sky.

Kaevryn tried to hold on to his spear, but he could no longer tell where his body ended or where the strange energy began.

The world around him disappeared.

There was no sound of impact.

No clear sensation of movement.

One moment, he was standing on the battlefield.

The next, everything had become light.

Kaevryn could no longer see the entity. He could no longer feel the ruined earth beneath his feet.

He did not know whether the enemy had been destroyed, whether the battlefield had collapsed, or whether something beyond his understanding had begun.

The only thing that remained was the faint, steady pulse of the Shattered Core.

It sounded almost like a heartbeat.

Then even that sensation faded into silence.
