The corridor wound its way through the center of Exile Prime like a gold thread. The air around Kael and Nyra, who were hovering close, shimmered with memory rather than heat as they moved. There wasn't just rock on the walls. They were screens that displayed time fragments. places, faces, and voices from long ago. This was more than just a road. It was a calendar. He was also at the center of it all. Each step Kael took echoed louder than the last. Not in sound, but in meaning. Not only was he moving forward, but he was also delving deeper into the life that his mother had left behind and the secrets that she had guarded. The corridor led to a chamber unlike any Kael had seen. A platform that floated above nothingness was framed by towering light pillars. Space twisted beneath it like a whirlpool of stars. A huge, pulsating, and alive crystalline sphere floated just above the platform. Nyra spoke more subtly than usual. “That’s a Memory Core central to the Veil. Selene's research, the Erevan logs, and the minds of those who entered are all contained therein. Kael took a breath. “Can I access it?”

“Yes. However, not without cost. He nonetheless came forward. In response, the sphere increased its brightness. It then spoke. "Cal Virell." The room resounded with his name like thunder. "You've gone through truth, shadows, and storms. Is it possible for you to carry what was left behind?” Kael did not respond. He entered the light with a step. The room vanished immediately. —

The sky was cloudless as he stood in a field. A memory again, but clearer than the others. His mother was there. It is not a recording. An appearance. Selene appeared youthful. Alive. When she saw him, her eyes lit up. She said gently, "You came." Kael's chest tightened as he breathed. "Is this... you?" She gave a nod. "Some part of me. What I saved for you.”

He drew closer, his heart racing. "Why did you not return?" Why didn't you tell me about it all? She lost her smile. "Because the truth was dangerous. The Union desired to make use of the Veil. They sent spies into my crew. People died. To safeguard you, I hid everything, even from you. Kael felt his anger and grief clash. "I required you." “I know,” she whispered. And my love for you has never wavered. However, I had to complete what I had begun. Kael's eyes welled up with tears. "I'm following in your steps, but I'm not sure if I'm strong enough," I say. His face was touched by Selene. You are more resilient than I ever was. The Veil made the decision to show itself to you. That means something.”

The memories changed. They suddenly stood on the Erevan as it was burning. Alarms. Screams. Smoke.

Selene said as her image flickered, "Don't let my mistakes define your future." Take advice from them. But don't take on my load. Follow your own path. Kael tried to hold on but her hand slipped through his.

 —

He looked up. He was back in the chamber. Now quiet, the Memory Core dimmed. However, something had changed inside of him. a burden was lifted. A new one was set up. Nyra scanned him. "You interfaced directly with the core, according to your neural readings. It changed you. Kael gave a nod. “I saw her. She demonstrated everything. I understand now.”

He turned to the wall behind him. His mother's final command was for a terminal to automatically turn on. blueprints, locations, and cautions. There were additional Veils. The other was only one. Scattered across forgotten worlds. Each holds secrets that humanity cannot see. Additionally, they needed to be safeguarded. "Are you thinking the same things as I am?" Nyra inquired. “We can’t let the Union find them,” Kael said. "But neither can we destroy them." Nyra whirred. “Then what?”

Kael looked out into the swirling cosmos beneath the chamber. “We find them first.”

A long silence passed. After that, a lift rose toward the surface as the chamber became dim and gave way to the exit. Nyra and Kael tripped over it. As they ascended, sunlight broke through the rocky ceiling, casting warm light over Kael’s face.

The planet remained wild and enigmatic. However, it no longer bothered Kael. He understood it. More importantly, he knew who he was. He wasn’t just a boy looking for answers.

He was a legacy in motion.

 And the horizon was calling.

His communications were softly crackled by Echo's voice. “Systems are unstable. The power grid in the Erevan fluctuates. We must leave quickly. He had found this secret sector beneath layers of encrypted files thanks to the data he had retrieved from the core of the Erevan. a location that was previously only known to those who had nothing to lose by disclosing it. The cliffs' jagged edges were being whipped by the wind behind him. As he shielded his face from the ash and sand, Kael adjusted the scarf around his neck. As he sank toward the first structure, the hardened earth caught his boots. Silence pressed on him as he moved. There were no plants or animals in this area. There was no city at all. He entered what seemed like an old chamber. Its metallic walls were scarred by time, and flickering lights sputtered dimly above him. He finally saw it. It had strange markings that glowed like living circuits along its curved walls. Erevan wasn't the one. It was older. a lot older. Kael turned on the wristband's scanning module. The readings fluctuated erratically and were inconsistent. “This place shouldn’t exist,” he murmured. A soft, layered, mechanical and human voice suddenly carried in the wind. "Kael, you've returned," he said. His body got cold. "Who are they?" He exclaimed. No response. However, with a deep groan, the structure's entrance opened. Kael stood at the cliff's edge, looking out over the vastness of Exile Prime. Long shadows were being cast by the two low-lying suns over the red soil that was cracked and the twisted metal ruins that were scattered below. The distant, eerie hum of a machine far below the horizon was the only sound that broke the deep silence, which was both haunting and strangely familiar. Kael's thoughts had been consumed by a single question ever since he discovered the hidden transmission in the previous signal: what lay beyond this deserted planet? The messages suggested that something or someone was still alive and waiting to be discovered. As if her secrets were guiding him through the void, his mother's legacy seemed to be heavier than ever. Kael recalled the map he had pieced together from pieces in the Erevan archives as he adjusted the straps on his worn-out gear.
