"Noël Voss," Malakor's voice resonated through the entire cavern, cold and amplified by dark ether. "You are remarkably persistent for a penal labor rat."

Noël didn't answer.

He stood in the center of the damp plaza, the dark-grey Aethelgard armor heavy on his shoulders. Above them, on the high iron catwalks, sixty mana-rifles hummed with blue energy, their targeting reticles glowing like red embers across his coat.

Gideon stepped beside him, his silver rapier drawn, its white-gold solar ether pulsing in a steady rhythm. "Noël, those riflemen are positioned along the primary support beams. If they volley fire, this entire section of the plaza will be turned to slag."

"They won't volley fire," Noël said softly.

"Why not?"

"Because their guild commanders haven't been paid yet."

On the upper gantry, a hulking man clad in spiked iron plate, the commander of the Blood-Hound Mercenaries, stepped beside Inquisitor Malakor.

"Inquisitor," the commander growled, his voice echoing over the catwalk railing. "The Iron Viper vanguard was wiped out in five seconds. You said this would be a simple cleanup. Our contract doesn't cover fighting an Aethelgard-geared strike team."

"Execute them," Malakor commanded, his silver auditor's mask gleaming coldly beneath the cavern's red emergency lights. "The Syndicate will double your bounty upon their deaths."

The four guild commanders exchanged sharp glances. Greed outweighed caution in the ruined Sectors.

"Riflemen!" the Blood-Hound commander barked, raising his heavy gauntlet. "Lock targets! Fire on my mark!"

"Lyra," Noël called out softly.

"Y-Yes, Noël?!" Lyra whispered behind her helmet visor, her hands trembling slightly.

"Can you see the steam conduits beneath their feet?"

Lyra opened her eyes wide. Through her newly awakened Tier 1 Aethelgard Artificer vision, the dark iron pipes running along the underside of the upper gantry were lit up in bright, glowing blue lines.

"I see them!" Lyra gasped. "The pressure valves are rusted, but... but the main regulator is drawing power directly from the Sanctuary core!"

"Override the regulator," Noël instructed flatly. "Force a Stage 3 pressure purge."

Lyra didn't hesitate. She pulled a brass tuning spanner from her tool pouch, channeled her blue Artificer ether into the tool, and slammed it into the central junction box mounted against the plaza pillar.

Claaaang!

[Party Member 'Lyra Thorne' has invoked Skill: 'Artificer's Overdrive'!]

[Target: Sanctuary Pressure Conduit #09!]

Tiiiing!

[Warning! High-Pressure Steam Valve unsealed!]

Kaaaa-shhhh!

A deafening roar erupted from the upper gantries as superheated Aethelgard steam blasted out of the rusted iron pipes directly beneath the riflemen's boots. White-hot vapor engulfed the catwalks in a split second.

"Gahhhhh!"

"My eyes! I can't see the targets!"

"The platform is melting!"

Screams rang out from the upper gantries as sixty sharpshooters broke formation, blinded and scalded by the pressurized steam. Their mana-rifles discharged wildly into the ceiling vaults, shattering stalactites and sending stone dust raining down onto the plaza.

"Gideon! Elara!" Noël shouted, his left pupil flaring with intense violet light. "Clear the catwalk ladders!"

"Understood!" Gideon roared.

Whooooosh!

Gideon and Elara sprang forward, blurring through the rising steam. Elara's Radiant Lancer spear pierced through two retreating mercenary scouts, while Gideon's solar rapier cleaved through the support chains of the left gantry ladder.

Clang! Bang!

The remaining mercenaries were trapped on the burning catwalks.

Up on the central gantry, Inquisitor Malakor stood untouched by the steam, surrounded by a swirling barrier of dark ether. His silver mask stared down at Noël through the white vapor.

"Impudent trash," Malakor hissed, drawing a long, obsidian-bladed rapier from his waist. "You think a steam leak changes your fate?"

He leaped from the high catwalk, his body surrounded by a heavy, oppressive aura that crushed the floorboards beneath him as he landed twenty paces ahead of Noël.

[Hostile Entity: Inquisitor Malakor]

[Classification: Syndicate High Auditor]

[Tier: Tier 3 (Suppressed)]

The weight of a Tier 3 entity's aura was suffocating. Lyra and Elara stumbled, their knees buckling under the sheer physical pressure.

Gideon stepped beside Noël, his rapier raised in a low guard, sweat dripping down his temple. "Noël... his raw stat density is three times higher than ours. We can't block his strikes."

"We don't need to block his strikes," Noël said.

He pulled the Chronometer of the Unseen Clerk from his vest pocket with his left hand, while his right hand gripped the small, rusted brass key he had looted from Tally's shop ledger earlier.

Click.

He pressed the silver crown of the pocket watch.

[Relic Effect: 'Chronometer of the Unseen Clerk' activated.]

[Local System Scan delayed by 3.0 seconds.]

Malakor lunged, his obsidian rapier transforming into a streak of black lightning aimed directly at Noël's throat.

"Die!"

Void-Weaver's Tread.

Pft!

Noël's body blurred, executing a rapid spatial step that placed him right beside Malakor's right shoulder.

Malakor's eyes widened behind his silver mask. "What?!"

He tried to turn his blade, but Noël didn't target his body.

Through his Gyre Eye, Noël saw the glowing crimson badge pinned to Malakor's chest, the Syndicate Warden's Authority Seal. It was the item that granted him administrative immunity from the Sanctuary's automated defense cannons.

Noël slammed the rusted brass key directly into the center of Malakor's Authority Seal and twisted it with all his strength.

Kack!

[You have executed an 'Administrative Key Conflict'!]

[Syndicate Warden Seal corrupted!]

[Inquisitor Malakor's immunity status: REVOKED!]

Tiiiing!

A terrifying, deep-bass horn echoed through the entire cavern.

The massive brass defense turrets mounted on the cavern ceiling swung around in unison, their twin barrels glowing with blinding crimson plasma.

[System Defense Protocol Activated!]

[Illegal Intruder Identified: Inquisitor Malakor (Tier 3)!]

[Commencing Immediate Elimination!]

Malakor's face drained of color behind his silver mask. "N-No! Wait! I am a High Auditor!"

Kaaaa-BOOM!

Twin beams of superheated plasma slammed into Malakor's dark ether barrier. The sheer force of the explosion blew him backward through the canyon archway, hurtling out of Sector Three Sanctuary entirely.

Seeing their commander blasted out of the Sector, the four remaining mercenary guilds broke ranks and scattered in total panic, fleeing into the outer wasteland.

Silence fell over the lower plaza.

Tiiiing!

Noël let out a slow, steady breath and wiped a thin trail of blood from his left nostril.

The siege of Sector Three was over.

It was a monumental monolithic pillar devoid of windows. Its black surface was carved with thousands of pulsing crimson runes that thrummed with immense weight."The ambient pressure here is three times higher than in the lower towers," Gideon said. He leaned on his right foot, his silver rapier drawn, its white-gold solar ether flickering against the gale. "My ether flow is lagging.""Keep your breathing steady," Noël said, wiping sweat and blood from his chin.
