The heavy iron gates of Sector Three Sanctuary groaned as they slid open into the black fog of the Outer Wasteland.

Beyond the threshold lay the Desolate Corridor, a sixty-mile stretch of unmonitored ash dunes connecting the lower regional sanctuaries to the lower gates of the Pathfinder Capital. Here, there were no administrative terminals, no Sanctuary defense cannons, and no public registry offices to invoke.

The System's jurisdiction in the wasteland was absolute, raw, and unbuffered.

"The ash fog is dense," Gideon said, stepping through the gate with his silver rapier drawn. The white-gold solar ether along his blade cast a faint halo in the murky gloom. "Visual range is less than fifteen paces."

"Keep your guards up," Noël said, pulling the collar of his trench coat high against the biting ash wind. "The Syndicate isn't the only threat in the corridor."

Lyra and Elara fell into formation behind them. Lyra held a newly assembled Aethelgard ether-compass, its needle spinning erratic circles as latent mana currents pulsed through the ground. Elara carried her Radiant Lancer spear at the ready, her Tier 1 senses mapping the rustle of the ash dunes.

"Noël," Elara whispered, her eyes sweeping the perimeter. "The ground... it's vibrating."

"Tally," Noël called out softly.

Tally hovered close to his collar, its tiny brass monocle gleaming in the dim light. "B-Boss... we're out of the regional broadcast buffer. The stream quality is degraded, but four thousand observers are still tuned in."

Noël didn't check the stream windows.

He opened his left eye.

The Gyre Eye spun, its violet light cutting through the thick ash fog. Through the haze, three towering crimson silhouettes were bounding across the dunes at frightening speed, their physical frames distorting the air.

[Entity Detected: Ash-Stalker Vanguard (Tier 1)]

[Classification: Wasteland Anomaly Beast]

[Count: 3]

These were not specters or soldiers tied to historical rules. They were feral wasteland beasts, eight-foot-tall quadrupedal horrors forged from calcified bone and hardened ash, immune to psychological misdirection.

"Contact ahead!" Noël shouted, drawing his Aethelgard combat knife with his right hand while his left hand gathered violet ether. "Three Ash-Stalkers! Spread out!"

Grrrrr-aaaah!

The lead Ash-Stalker leapt out of the fog, its bone-plated jaws snapping toward Gideon's throat.

Claaang!

Gideon raised his rapier, parrying the beast's massive claw mid-air. The collision produced a sharp shower of sparks, pushing Gideon back two paces into the ash dune.

"Their hide is as dense as reinforced steel!" Gideon gritted his teeth, channeling solar ether into his blade. "Solar Thrust!"

Kaaa-shing!

A beam of white-gold light shot from Gideon's rapier, piercing through the lead Stalker's shoulder plate. The beast let out a guttural howl, but instead of retreating, it lashed out with its barbed tail, clipping Gideon's forearm armor.

"Gideon, fall back two steps!" Noël called out.

Void-Weaver's Tread.

Pft!

Noël's body blurred, executing a rapid spatial leap that placed him directly beside the lead Stalker's exposed flank.

He drove his Aethelgard combat knife directly into the soft joint behind its front left leg, channeling raw violet ether straight through the blade into its internal nerve core.

Puuu-shk!

"Gaaah!" The beast shrieked as violet lightning ruptured its leg tendons.

"Elara! Finish it!" Noël barked.

Whooooosh!

Elara lunged forward like a silver streak, her Radiant Lancer spear blazing with white energy. She drove the spearhead straight through the Stalker's throat, pinning its massive head to the frozen ash floor.

Cr-crack!

The first Ash-Stalker dissolved into black cinders.

However, before they could catch their breath, the remaining two Ash-Stalkers burst through the fog simultaneously. One lunged toward Lyra from the left, while the other charged at Noël with its barbed tail raised for an impaling strike.

"Lyra, drop!" Gideon shouted, throwing himself toward the left Stalker and sweeping his rapier in a wide solar slash.

Lyra ducked instinctively as Gideon's solar blade cleaved through the beast's front claws, sending black blood spraying onto the ash.

The third Stalker closed the distance between them in a fraction of a second. Its crimson eyes burned with feral hunger as its six-foot tail whipped toward Noël's chest like a steel lance.

He didn't have enough ether to execute another Void-Weaver's Tread immediately.

Noël brought his left arm up, bracing his Aethelgard forearm plate against the strike.

Kaaaa-boom!

The heavy barbed tail slammed into his vambrace with terrifying impact. Pain shot through his arm as the metal bent, the sheer force skidding his boots back five feet across the gravel.

"Noël!" Lyra screamed.

Noël gritted his teeth, ignoring the throbbing ache in his left arm. At Tier 1, with his Strength and Agility enhanced, his body could endure physical trauma that would have crushed him an hour earlier.

He locked his right hand onto the beast's barbed tail, pinning it beneath his armpit.

"You're not the only predator in this wasteland," he muttered.

He channeled the full power of his Cognition into his left eye, releasing a concentrated surge of Gyre Ether straight into the beast's crimson eyes at point-blank range.

Flash!

The beast shrieked in agony as its optic nerves burned out from the violet light. Blinded and disoriented, it thrashed wildly.

Gideon stepped in from the side, his rapier gleaming with gold light, and executed a clean decapitating strike across its neck.

Puuu-shk!

The second Stalker's head spun through the air, crashing into the ash before its body collapsed into dust.

Seconds later, Elara and Gideon combined their strikes to dispatch the final injured Stalker, leaving the surrounding dunes silent once more.

[You have defeated 3 Ash-Stalker Vanguards!]

[Tribute Acquired: 4,500]

[Current Tribute: 47,900]

Panting heavily, Gideon sheathed his rapier and looked at his dented forearm guard, then at Noël.

"No rules to exploit out here," Gideon said, wiping black blood from his blade with a rag. "Just raw teeth and claws."

"That is why the wasteland is honest," Noël replied, flexing his bruised left arm.

Lyra walked over, holding out a small glass vial of regenerative salve. "Your arm, Noël... the plate took the blunt force, but your bone has a hairline stress crack."

"Apply the salve," Noël said, extending his wrist.

As Lyra rubbed the cooling ointment over his bruised skin, the silver Chronometer of the Unseen Clerk inside his vest pocket vibrated softly. The three cracks on its glass face shimmered in the ash wind.

Noël looked down the long, foggy expanse of the Desolate Corridor.

Far in the distance, towering through the grey clouds like a titan's spear, stood the jagged silhouette of the Pathfinder Capital, the gateway to Tier 2.

He adjusted his trench coat, closed his left eye, and opened his mouth.

"Let me know when the salve sets," he said. "We have forty miles left to walk."

He leaned on his right foot, his silver rapier drawn, its white-gold solar ether flickering against the gale. "My ether flow is lagging.""Keep your breathing steady," Noël said, wiping sweat and blood from his chin.
