Then we're short

The maintenance room door slammed shut behind us, and Donald dropped the remains of the mechanical hound's power core onto the workbench.

"We have less than two hours before Thorne's men reach this block," he said. "If their scanners can detect the tagged steel, we need to stop them from locating this room."

Luggard set down his bag and crossed to the wall where the old transit blueprints hung beneath cracked glass.

"There might be a way."

He wiped dust from the diagram, then pointed to a thick line running behind the maintenance room.

"This is the old grounding conduit for the subway power network. The trains stopped running years ago, but the copper grounding rods should still be embedded in the rock."

Donald leaned closer. "You think we can use the old grounding system to interfere with their scanners?"

"I think we can reduce the signal coming from our door. The steel plates are connected to the frame, and the frame is connected to the building's structure. If we ground the metal properly, we might make the scanner readings less useful."

"Might?" Donald repeated.

"Unless you have a better idea."

Donald studied the diagram for another moment before reaching for his tools. "No, that's worth trying. Show me the junction box."

Luggard pointed toward a rusted panel in the far corner.

I watched my brothers move into position without waiting for me to tell them what to do. In my previous life, I had treated their survival as my personal responsibility. Every decision had been mine, every danger mine to face. When I failed, they had been left without a plan.

I wasn't going to make the same mistake again.

A familiar chime sounded in my head.

Shelter Assessment: Environmental Adaptation Detected.

Inhabitant Donald: Mechanical and Electrical Skills Applied.

Inhabitant Luggard: Structural Mapping Skills Applied.

Shelter Synergy Increased to 40%.

New Blueprint Available: Faraday Defense Gate.

Requirements: 2 Units Refined Alloy, 50 Feet Heavy Copper Wire.

I frowned at the final message.

The system had recognized what my brothers were doing and turned their work into a blueprint. That was useful, but it also meant the system was observing us closely enough to measure our abilities and progress.

I remembered the enormous machine at the power substation, connected to the city's electrical grid. The system had wanted me to synchronize our shelter with that network. I still didn't know whether the two were connected, and I wasn't about to give it access to anything else until I understood more.

"Donald," I said, "can you get fifty feet of heavy copper wire from that conduit?"

He was already working on the junction panel. "Probably more than that. Why?"

I explained the blueprint.

He stopped turning his screwdriver. "And the alloy?"

"I have one unit from the hound. The blueprint requires two."

"Then we're short."

I checked my inventory. The system had listed the extracted material as one unit weighing twelve pounds. I had assumed the entire chest plate had been converted, but the interface hadn't explained whether another unit could be extracted from the remaining frame.

"We'll deal with the alloy later," I said. "First, get the copper. We can decide whether to use the blueprint after we know exactly what it does."

Donald nodded. "Good. I don't want a mysterious system deciding how our door works."

He forced the chisel into the corroded seam of the junction panel. After several attempts, the cover broke loose and fell to the floor.

Behind it lay thick bundles of black cable, their rubber insulation cracked with age. Donald tested one line with his meter, checked the readings, and shook his head.

"Most of this is dead. That's good for us. We don't want to connect the shelter to an unknown live circuit."

He began separating the usable copper from the brittle casing while Luggard held the work light and marked the cable lengths.

I checked my phone. The signal had dropped to one bar.

Then it buzzed.

A message appeared from the private number Thorne had used earlier.

You're deeper than the old station level, aren't you? My scanner just hit a dead zone near the utility hub on Fourth Street.

Another message arrived before I could respond.

Don't bother running. The city authority has declared a structural quarantine over your quadrant. In forty-eight hours, nobody enters or leaves without my clearance.

I read the messages again.

In my previous life, the authorities hadn't sealed this district until the disaster was already underway. Thorne was using his influence to close it early, before most people even understood they were in danger.

He wasn't simply gathering supplies anymore. He was deciding who would be allowed to escape.

"What's wrong?" Luggard asked.

I handed him the phone.

His face tightened as he read the messages. "Can he really get the authorities to close an entire district?"

"With enough money and the right connections, he can get people to sign almost anything," I said. "Especially if he convinces them he's protecting the public."

Donald looked up from the copper wire. "If the quarantine starts in forty-eight hours, we need another way out before then."

"We also need to know where they'll put the checkpoints," Luggard added. "The old service tunnels connect to several drainage routes. Some of them lead beyond the main roads."

"Can you map the safest one?"

"I can try, but the plans are old. Some passages may be flooded or blocked."

"Start with the routes that don't cross the main streets. We need options, not guesses."

Luggard collected the blueprints and began comparing them with the smaller map he carried in his bag.

Donald pulled a long coil of copper wire from the wall and laid it across the workbench.

"Fifty feet," he announced. "Enough for the blueprint, assuming the system doesn't ask us to sacrifice a generator next."

I almost laughed, but a new notification appeared before I could answer.

Shelter Network Update.

External quarantine activity detected.

Emergency Shelter Upgrade Available.

Complete Faraday Defense Gate to unlock Shelter Level 2.

Additional Reward: One Refined Alloy Unit.

I stared at the reward.

The system had offered exactly what we needed to complete the gate.

That was too convenient to ignore, but it was also too convenient to trust.

"James?" Donald asked. "What does it say?"

I showed him the message.

He read it, then looked at the exposed cables and the single alloy unit in my inventory.

"If we finish the gate, we get the missing material," he said. "But we don't know what unlocking the next shelter level will do."

"Or what the system expects us to connect to," I replied.

Luggard turned from the blueprints. "We can't afford to reject every opportunity just because it might be dangerous. We need a better shelter, and we need a way out."

He was right, and that made the decision harder.

I could refuse the upgrade and keep our shelter as it was, risking discovery by Thorne's scanners. Or I could accept the system's offer, strengthen our defenses, and risk giving it more control over our shelter.

I opened the blueprint details and searched for a list of required connections.

Most of the specifications were visible, but one line remained locked.

Network Interface: Restricted.

I tried opening it again.

The same warning appeared.

Access denied until Shelter Level 2 activation.

The system wanted us to upgrade before it would show us what the upgrade involved.

I looked at my brothers. Neither of them had an easy answer.

"Prepare the gate," I said. "But don't connect anything to the shelter network. We build what we can inspect, and if the system tries to activate something we haven't approved, we stop."

Donald gathered the copper wire. Luggard moved the workbench closer to the door.

I was about to help when the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every electrical device in the room shut down together.

Donald's meter went dark. The work light died in Luggard's hand, leaving us in near darkness.

A blue message appeared in front of me.

Warning: Unauthorized shelter connection detected.

Remote access attempt in progress.

Source: Thorne Security.

Before I could react, another line appeared.

Connection bypassing external defenses.

The system had promised to help us hide from Thorne.

Now Thorne was trying to get inside our shelter, and something had already opened the door for him.

The hound's broken leg scraped across the stairs as it dragged itself toward us. Black fluid leaked from the torn joint, hissing when it touched the concrete. It was damaged, but it showed no sign of slowing down."Donald, fall back!" I shouted. The creature lunged. Despite having only three working legs, it crossed two steps in a single bound, its metal jaws snapping inches from my face.I raised my steel pipe with both hands. Its jaws clamped down with enough force to bend the iron. The impact drove me onto my knees, sending pain through my wrists and shoulders. Its red eyes brightened as its rear claws dug into the stairs."James!" Luggard yelled."Stay away from its mouth!" I struggled to keep the pipe between its teeth. "Donald, get to its spine!"Donald moved along the wall, keeping out of reach. By the time we reached the maintenance room, my legs were aching, and the battery on my phone had dropped to twelve percent.Luggard led us through the final stretch of the tunnel, counting drainage pipes until we reached the familiar junction behind our shelter. Donald followed close behind, his wrench resting against his shoulder. He had been unusually quiet since we left the rail yard. The moment we entered the room, he turned to me."All right, James. Explain how you made those steel plates disappear."I dropped my bag beside the wall. "I told you about the inventory.""You told us it existed. You didn't explain how it works." He pointed at the empty space where the stolen supplies should have been. "You stored hundreds of pounds of equipment without carrying a single extra bag. Then you left two generators behind because they were too heavy. I need to understand what we're dealing with."Donald wasn't afraid of hard work or danger. What bothered him was something he couldn't exam

  • Then throw that thing away!

The red light on the water filter kept blinking.I turned the device over in my hand, wishing I could rip the tracker out with my bare fingers. Thorne's men were still behind us, and if we led them to our shelter, everything we had done so far would be pointless."Donald, we can't go back to the subway," I shouted through the window. "They'll follow us straight to the base.""Then throw that thing away!""And let them find it lying in the street? They'll know we've discovered the tracker."Donald cursed as the truck swerved around a parked lorry. "Unless you know how to disable it, I suggest you stop giving me problems and start giving me solutions."Before I could answer, Luggard leaned forward."Take the next left."Donald glanced at him. Their security vehicles won't get far once we leave the paved road, but this truck should manage.""You're sure?""No, Don

  • The Stolen Truck

"Are you out of your mind, James?"Donald stared at the black transport truck across the street. Two armed guards stood near its front bumper, chatting while smoke curled from their cigarettes. Behind them, the open cargo doors revealed generators, steel plates, and crates of water filters.Everything we needed was sitting in that truck."Keep your voice down," I told him."Keep my voice down? Those men have rifles!""I can see that. We aren't going to fight them."Donald gave me a doubtful look. "Then how exactly do you plan to get that truck?""You're a mechanic. Can you start it without the keys?"He studied the vehicle for a moment. "Probably. But I'll need time, and I'm not doing it with a gun pointed at my head.""Luggard will help you get inside. I'll distract the guards."Luggard tightened his grip on the iron pipe. "And what happens when they notice we're stealing their truck?""We drive away before they can stop us."Neither brother looked convinced, but we were running out
