Teodoro smiles when he sees Josias enchanted by a resident girl of Happiness Slum. “My boy, take it easy with that heart. Do I know her by any chance?”
“Her name is Melissa.” Josias responds as if he is singing, “And she lives further on.” Josias, however, shakes his head, “Well, what am I doing? Okay, the girl is beautiful and nice, and she was admiring my chest, even though I am not muscular; but, I need to find something. She must think I am a pervert for walking without a shirt.”
“There is nothing wrong with a man walking around without a shirt, especially in this heat.” Teodoro ponders, “But, as I warned you, better to start buying your things.”
Josias smiles as he remembers. “Her father is very strict; he doesn't want his dear daughter to marry a poor man. So I better get ahead.”
Josias starts walking out of the reception. Teodoro asks him, “Hey, where are you going?”
“Buy the towel,” Josias answers, without stopping or looking back.
Back on the main street, Josias realizes that a group of people is standing on the sidewalk as if they are waiting for the bus. Josias remembers that no buses are traveling in the locality and that it was a van that did the job. He approaches the group. “Excuse me; are you by chance waiting for the van?”
“Yes, and it is coming.” A lady in formal wear answers.
Josias looks back and decides to wait for the van. It stops. The guy in the passenger seat gets out and opens the rear door for the others to enter. He serves as the driver's assistant, collecting the ticket, cheaper than the conventional bus. There is still space and Josias enters, sitting in the middle of another teenager, probably going to some vocational course, and the lady who gave the information about the van. Inside, Michael Jackson's “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” is blaring on the radio. The guy next to Josias starts to move, he thinks he's dancing just like Michael.
The van reaches Downtown. Lagoon City is a medium-sized city with approximately 200,000 inhabitants, placed and build near the coast. The Downtown has numerous commercial and residential buildings, the tallest having an average of twenty floors. Traffic is busier, pedestrians need to cross the crosswalk and respect the traffic lights, and people crowd when walking on the sidewalk. Among so many people, Josias ends up calling the attention for being shirtless and in sweatpants. But, he is already getting used to it. Upon entering a Household linen shop, he is promptly attended to by a saleswoman who just needed to sell him a whole wardrobe, even Josias having repeatedly said that he just wanted to buy a bath towel.
When he left the store, relieved, Josias wondered if he was that cute, to get female attention. The fact is he was modest. And yes, he could have used the time to date the girls at school, but precisely because of the lack of financial support from his father, Josias spent his adolescence working in small services. Soon, he didn't have the head for picking up and dating like his other friends.
When walking through the downtown streets, Josias then remembers that right here he has already worked selling popsicles or delivering pamphlets. Any job that helped him buys jeans or new sneakers.
Josias stops walking when he is passing through the main square of the city, which is the ground zero of the municipality, having the slight impression of seeing Everaldo. A young man standing at the bus stop formally dressed like his friend from last night. Josias did not want to shout his name, as it could be another man. But, he tried to get closer. When he was almost close, a bus parked at the bus stop, and the boy, head down, promptly boarded the back door. If only he had his head up...
Josias regrets not having arrived on time. He wanted to meet with Everaldo again to say that everything was fine and that he was taking steps to build a better life. The religious boy's whereabouts became a mystery to Josias. Meanwhile, the same van pointed over the horizon, around the corner to the square. Josias signals to it. Immediately the other passengers look unfavorably at Josias, looking him up and down, thinking that the boy's little clothing and his dark skin indicate that he is a slum dweller.
Josias ignores the prejudiced glances and gets on the van, now with Captain and Tennille's “Do That to Me One More Time”, sounding on the radio and bothering others waiting for driving.

Chapter 3643 Instead of Scolding, Supporting
“Wait a second, J.J.” Sarah decided to voice what she was feeling. “You aren't starting to think poorly of Alan again, are you? Has David been showing up around here?”“David vanished off to Rio, last I heard.” J.J. shrugged as if it were none of his business. “No, I don't want to compete for space with him anymore. I have my own empire.”“Good.” Sarah narrowed her eyes. “Keep repeating that in front of the mirror every day.”J.J. looked back at her and gave a charming smile. “Hey, don't worry! I’m actually worried about my older brother. Do you trust that Sofia might have changed?”“Who am I to say anything?” Sarah shrugged. “It’s Alan who needs to discern whether there’s been a change or not.”“Wise words, my dear.” J.J. kissed Sarah’s other cheek. But she remained uneasy.******Erasmo was startled by Olivia appearing in the kitchen with a heavy tread. He was at the fridge, about to sneak a piece of hidden raspberry flan, and had to quickly shut the door.“Honey, you've barely been
Chapter 3462 Erasmo Wants to Help
“You want to help Ismael Lancaster’s campaign?” Augusto’s eyes nearly popped out of his head.He wasn’t stupid; he had done basic research on Vaztrans. Lancaster couldn’t afford to be careless. However, Sofia Vasquez was the wife of Alan Campos Rocha, the heir to the Rocha commercial empire. Since Lancaster’s ultimate goal was Josias...With that in mind, Augusto produced the most fake and opportunistic smile imaginable. “Oh, yes, Mr. Vasquez, it would be an honor!”“Put those verbs in the present indicative, please, because we are talking about concrete facts.” Erasmo raised his index finger, mimicking a big shot — though only mimicking.“Excellent! I didn’t know you followed my candidate’s trajectory,” Augusto continued smiling. As Engrácia served two cups of tea, Erasmo wondered if he should confirm that he was only supporting Lancaster because Josias would certainly bar him from supporting Tobias. Erasmo didn’t want to clash with Josias — not now, with his little daughter living a
Chapter 3461 Alan Is Happy
Days passed. Tobias and Ismael were officially in the heat of the political race. The employees at Rocha Constructions gossiped among themselves about whether they should choose or vote for the candidate obviously favored by Josias.“Do you think he’ll fire us if we vote for Ismael?” someone asked.Tony narrowed his eyes. “Don’t be ridiculous; it’s a secret ballot!”“Boss-controlled voting is a thing of the past, guys,” another architect argued.“Well, we know Tobias Ibrahim’s history, so I’m with him,” a secretary said with a mischievous smile, focused on the candidate’s handsome Middle Eastern features.Alan walked past them, wishing everyone a good morning. Tony handed him the day’s messages.“How are things, sir?” Tony asked.“Better, Tony!” Alan replied with a wide grin, entering his office. “Sofia is behaving, she’s being the wife I fell in love with and married.”“Thank God for that, sir. I hope the family is more at peace.” Tony placed the notes on the desk and stepped out.Al
Chapter 1581 A Little Bit of Peace
The next day, Tuesday. The police station was once again in a pink-cloud atmosphere with the definitive capture of the lord drug Lampião. The journalists who had camped out applauded Sergeant Carvalho effusively for his swift action. Unfortunately, during the operation, one officer lost his life in the shootout. Because of this, Carvalho was neither smiling nor boasting in front of the cameras.“Officer Limeira fought crime with honor and bravery. We extend our condolences to his family and friends. But he would certainly be proud to know that we captured a terrible criminal. We hope to continue until we free Lion’s Den from the yoke of the drug trade. The residents of that community deserve to live without fear!”The journalists fired sharp questions while the photographers clicked away with their cameras.Among them, Matthew stood discreetly in a corner, but with a small satisfied smile on his face.He had slept well, and just as he had expected, good news had appeared on his tablet
Chapter 3460 Saying What They Want to Hear
João Paulo made a point of heading to William’s house to relay exactly what he had heard from Erasmo’s own mouth.Campos Pizzeria was in full swing, and William was managing the cash flow. He slammed the register shut with a loud bang after discovering he was about to be fired.“HE DID WHAT? That old imbecile is going to let me go after everything I did to get that company out of the red?”“I guess he doesn’t want you confirming that his wife diverts the revenue to pay for handbags and shoes,” Brigitte joked.Caio approached from the kitchen, shaking his head. “Guys, we could hear you from inside. João Paulo, how did you find this out?”“In the craziest way possible: they called me in, wanting me to put a piece of news in my column that I suspect is a total lie.” João Paulo smiled with disdain.“Which one?” William wanted to know anyway.“They wanted me to accuse Melissa of beating the hell out of Mrs. Vasquez in their living room.”William, Caio, and Brigitte exchanged suspicious loo
Chapter 3459 Daryl, a Supporter?
“You’re not going to pull this stunt and pretend you support Tobias, are you?” Josias crossed his arms, indignant at Daryl’s posture. To him, this was entirely inappropriate.Diane decided to speak up. “Josias, does that mean we, as Mountains, are obligated to support Lancaster?”“Not necessarily. I’m saying you’re only here out of wounded ego because you were rejected by him,” Josias replied, hitting the bullseye. “Isn’t that why you’re here? You’re trying to wedge yourselves into politics, but you’re more lost than a blind man in a shootout. No politician wants to tarnish their reputation by associating with you!”“Okay, dear, that’s enough,” Melissa patted his hand, smiling elegantly. “Don’t cause a scene at dinner.”“Exactly, Melissa. I’m glad you’re here,” Daryl smiled mockingly. “And how is my nephew Alan? Has he resolved his situation with Sofia?”Something inside Josias snapped. “He is not your nephew, Daryl. Forget Alan!”“Never. After my brother dedicated years of his life t
