Chapter 9 Going to Downtown

Teodoro smiles when he sees Josias enchanted by a resident girl of Happiness Slum. “My boy, take it easy with that heart. Do I know her by any chance?”

“Her name is Melissa.” Josias responds as if he is singing, “And she lives further on.” Josias, however, shakes his head, “Well, what am I doing? Okay, the girl is beautiful and nice, and she was admiring my chest, even though I am not muscular; but, I need to find something. She must think I am a pervert for walking without a shirt.”

“There is nothing wrong with a man walking around without a shirt, especially in this heat.” Teodoro ponders, “But, as I warned you, better to start buying your things.”

Josias smiles as he remembers. “Her father is very strict; he doesn't want his dear daughter to marry a poor man. So I better get ahead.”

Josias starts walking out of the reception. Teodoro asks him, “Hey, where are you going?”

“Buy the towel,” Josias answers, without stopping or looking back.

Back on the main street, Josias realizes that a group of people is standing on the sidewalk as if they are waiting for the bus. Josias remembers that no buses are traveling in the locality and that it was a van that did the job. He approaches the group. “Excuse me; are you by chance waiting for the van?”

“Yes, and it is coming.” A lady in formal wear answers.

Josias looks back and decides to wait for the van. It stops. The guy in the passenger seat gets out and opens the rear door for the others to enter. He serves as the driver's assistant, collecting the ticket, cheaper than the conventional bus. There is still space and Josias enters, sitting in the middle of another teenager, probably going to some vocational course, and the lady who gave the information about the van. Inside, Michael Jackson's “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” is blaring on the radio. The guy next to Josias starts to move, he thinks he's dancing just like Michael.

The van reaches Downtown. Lagoon City is a medium-sized city with approximately 200,000 inhabitants, placed and build near the coast. The Downtown has numerous commercial and residential buildings, the tallest having an average of twenty floors. Traffic is busier, pedestrians need to cross the crosswalk and respect the traffic lights, and people crowd when walking on the sidewalk. Among so many people, Josias ends up calling the attention for being shirtless and in sweatpants. But, he is already getting used to it. Upon entering a Household linen shop, he is promptly attended to by a saleswoman who just needed to sell him a whole wardrobe, even Josias having repeatedly said that he just wanted to buy a bath towel.

When he left the store, relieved, Josias wondered if he was that cute, to get female attention. The fact is he was modest. And yes, he could have used the time to date the girls at school, but precisely because of the lack of financial support from his father, Josias spent his adolescence working in small services. Soon, he didn't have the head for picking up and dating like his other friends.

When walking through the downtown streets, Josias then remembers that right here he has already worked selling popsicles or delivering pamphlets. Any job that helped him buys jeans or new sneakers.

Josias stops walking when he is passing through the main square of the city, which is the ground zero of the municipality, having the slight impression of seeing Everaldo. A young man standing at the bus stop formally dressed like his friend from last night. Josias did not want to shout his name, as it could be another man. But, he tried to get closer. When he was almost close, a bus parked at the bus stop, and the boy, head down, promptly boarded the back door. If only he had his head up...

Josias regrets not having arrived on time. He wanted to meet with Everaldo again to say that everything was fine and that he was taking steps to build a better life. The religious boy's whereabouts became a mystery to Josias. Meanwhile, the same van pointed over the horizon, around the corner to the square. Josias signals to it. Immediately the other passengers look unfavorably at Josias, looking him up and down, thinking that the boy's little clothing and his dark skin indicate that he is a slum dweller.

Josias ignores the prejudiced glances and gets on the van, now with Captain and Tennille's “Do That to Me One More Time”, sounding on the radio and bothering others waiting for driving.

“Come on, don’t make me laugh.” Jake snapped free from João Paulo and headed to the living room, against the homeowner’s wishes. João Paulo huffed and followed him. “I swear. How can you accuse me of something I didn’t do?” “You didn’t write that article because police columns aren’t your thing, you gossiping snitch,” Jake barked. “No, I didn’t dare because you Cogos are always complain. Your sister came to my office complaining that I didn’t write anything about her breakup with Felipe Mountain, saying it was just another one of my plans!” “And wasn’t it?” Jake raised his eyebrows mockingly. “Of course not! Come on, I’m guilty of everything no matter what happens, is that it? What kind of logic is that?” “You should never have defamed Suzy in the first place.” Jake shook his head, feeling superior. “Because of you, Suzy can’t admit she loves Luís Vasquez.” “But what does that have to do with anything, huh?” João Paulo crossed his arms. “Suzy claims that admitting her feelings

The news article from LCN was published, accusing Suzy of vandalism and hysteria in the editorial room. Suzy Cogo was portrayed as someone with mental health needs, a danger to society. The article detailed how she destroyed the glass panel separating João Paulo’s office using two staplers. Other journalists served as witnesses, implying a possible obsession of Suzy with the journalist, given that João Paulo is a handsome and hunky young man, eye candy for the women. After all, it wasn’t the first time Suzy appeared supposedly to complain about his articles. At Vasquez Mansion, Luís was reading the article for the fifth time, the newspaper pages already stained with his fingers. Alan and Sofia were worried about their cousin’s obsession. “Luís, your skim milk coffee is getting cold,” Alan broke the awkward silence. “I’m losing my appetite,” Luís murmured to himself. “A big man like you can’t go without eating, cousin.” Sofia nudged him, trying to be funny. Luís put the newspape

  • Chapter 3276 No Pressure

Caio and Brigitte met at home. Caio was sitting in the armchair watching TV, so sprawled out that he looked like he was posing for a certain magazine. Brigitte felt struck by lightning upon seeing her chiseled, attractive husband wearing only a pair of shorts so short it looked like a boxer shorts. The bulge in Caio’s pants was inviting and tempting... “Good evening, darling,” Brigitte greeted him, her eyes fixed on his ‘package’ as she sat down on the sofa. Instinctively, Brigitte hid her purse. The tip of her pharmacy plastic bag was visible. But Caio didn’t notice his wife’s purse, gazing at her sensually and fixating on her with the most charming smile possible. “Good evening, dear,” Caio sang the words. “How was your talk with Rosemary?” “It was great and enlightening,” Brigitte admitted, still looking at Caio’s manhood instead of his face. “Rosemary understood that we can’t achieve anything with insistence and pressure.” “I definitely don’t want to pressure you, my love

  • Chapter 3275 Josias Advises João Paulo to Take a Break

Rosemary returned to Lafayette Mansion. Walking through the mansion, she found the place silent. Looking at her wristwatch, she decided to go upstairs. Entering her suite, she heard the sound of water from the bathtub being splashed. Rosemary smiled, realizing Thierry wasn’t bathing alone. She entered the bathroom and was greeted with a little giggle from Jean Luc, who was happily splashing in the bathtub with Daddy Thierry. Thierry also seemed to be having fun, and to Rosemary, it looked like she was seeing two babies in the tub. Of course, sometimes Thierry held the child to prevent him from diving into the water or slipping and hitting his head. He asked in French, “Le bébé de papa s'amuse, hein?” Then he noticed Rosemary’s presence. “Regarde, Jean-Luc! Dis hello à maman!” Rosemary laughed, approaching. “I only understood ‘Mom.’ What silly stuff are you teaching my son in French, huh?” “Nothing, I’m a responsible father,” Thierry winked. Rosemary found a stool, dragged it

  • Chapter 3274 Playing with My Kids

Rosemary questioned Brigitte at Café Montanha if she really wanted children or if she was just trying to please Caio and her family. Rosemary had a faint suspicion when she saw how Brigitte took a long time to answer, looking into nothing. It seemed Rosemary had asked Brigitte whether 250 x 250 was the same as 250 x 250. There was even time for Neilton to prepare the cappuccinos and bring them to the table. “Two fancy cappuccinos for two fancy ladies,” Neilton joked, breaking the somber atmosphere. “He, he, he...” Brigitte took her cup. “Thanks, Neil.” “You’re welcome. Call me if you need anything else.” Neilton left. Brigitte turned to Rosemary, feeling she owed her an answer. “Rose, I honestly need to tell you that I didn’t know exactly what I was doing.” Rosemary reacted disappointed but tried not to be too harsh on her sister-in-law. “I suspected that when Caio told me you two hadn’t talked about it.” “Rose, what should I do? Everyone’s driving me crazy with all this press

  • Chapter 3273 I Don’t Want Him to Leave

Rodrigo and Nadia were chatting at Café Montanha about family news. Frank was on one of the stools, eating coxinha without catupiry. “Is the coxinha delicious, son?” Nadia asked maternally. “Yes, Mom,” Frank replied with his mouth full. Rodrigo had already told his son not to do that, but it seems he forgot... “So, my cousin Felipe is leaving. What a shame...” Rodrigo sighed. “He’s not moving too far away,” Nadia joked. “It’s right there in Sunset Village. When we visit Josias and Melissa, we can take the trip.” “That’s good. But we’ll miss the daily contact,” Rodrigo admitted. Rosemary and Brigitte entered, the latter dressed as a lawyer coming straight from Damascene Lawyers agency. “I needed to talk to you about a family matter, sister-in-law.” Rosemary pulled up a chair and sat down, with Brigitte doing the same. “I’m curious. Is it about some case or about OUR family?” Brigitte wasn’t sure whether to adopt the tone of a lawyer or sister-in-law. Rosemary gestured toward
