Standing in the doorway was Theo, holding a gun.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“Theo?” he said, confusion and dread mixing in his voice.

"What the hell are you doing here? And why are you holding a gun?”

He desperately hoped his suspicion was wrong, but the look in Theo's eyes told him everything he needed to know.

Theo’s face was tense, his chest rising and falling fast as he scanned the corridor behind him. “We're here to rescue you, my lord!"

The moment the words escaped his lips, Ethan sprang up from his chair abruptly.

In the blink of an eye, he closed the space between them, his hand gripping Theo’s collar and slamming him against the wall.

"Don’t tell me you’re responsible for the shootings outside," Ethan snarled, his eyes burning holes into Theo’s, his voice trembling with barely controlled rage.

Theo struggled under his grip, his voice rough. “We had to, my lord. If we hadn’t come to extract you, you would have been dead before morning.”

Ethan scoffed, amused by what seemed like

The mansion was silent, wrapped in the stillness that only came in the deepest hours of the night.Ethan had fallen asleep in the guest house. He sat slumped in the chair beside the bed, his upper body draped awkwardly across the mattress. His head rested on his folded arms, his hair falling messily across his forehead. One of his hands was stretched out, covering Jessica’s smaller hand lightly, as if even in sleep, he couldn’t let go.He looked vulnerable and utterly exhausted.Jessica’s hand twitched beneath his before her eyelids fluttered. Then, slowly, they opened as the world came back to her in pieces. Her throat felt raw, like she’d swallowed glass. Her lungs ached with every breath, tight and sore. Her limbs were heavy, weak, as if all the strength had been wrung out of them. She blinked several times, trying to clear the fog from her vision."Where… where am I?" she muttered, realizing the room was unfamiliar. The ceiling was high, decorated with elegant molding. The bed s

Back at the mansion, in one of the guest rooms, Jessica lay motionless on the bed.The room was dimly lit, the soft glow of a bedside lamp casting long shadows across the walls. The curtains were drawn, blocking out the night. And Ethan couldn’t stop moving. He paced from the bed to the window, then back again. His hand pressed against her wrist, checking her pulse for the tenth time in as many minutes. It was steady—stronger than before—but still, she didn’t wake.He leaned over her, placing the back of his hand against her forehead, gauging her temperature. He exhaled shakily after confirming it was normal and stepped back, running both hands through his damp hair. His shoes squelched faintly with every step. But he hadn’t thought to change. Hadn’t even considered leaving the room. Not when she was still unconscious. Not when he didn’t know if she’d wake up.He resumed pacing, his mind racing with questions he couldn’t answer."Why isn’t she awake yet? Did the water damage her lu

After what felt like an eternity—though it was barely three minutes—Ethan broke the surface of the water. He gasped for air, his lungs burning, his arms wrapped tightly around Jessica’s limp body. The world spun around him as he kicked toward the edge of the dock, fighting against the weight of his soaked clothes and the cold that had already begun to seep into his bones.“My Lord!”Theo’s voice rang out from above. After he had grabbed Jessica’s arms and pulled her up onto the concrete platform, Ethan hauled himself up. The moment his knees hit solid ground, he collapsed beside her.The gunfire had ceased.Bodies of Adrian’s men lay scattered across the dock—some slumped against shipping containers, others sprawled on the ground in dark, spreading pools.Ethan’s guards stood at various positions around the perimeter, weapons still raised, eyes scanning for any remaining threats. But Ethan didn’t notice any of it.His entire world had narrowed to the woman lying motionless before him

The map had shown a thirty-minute drive from the mansion to the seaport. But Ethan made it in twelve. The convoy of the black SUVs tore through the streets like bullets, tires screeching around corners. Traffic laws meant nothing to them as they ignored red lights, as he had instructed them.Inside the lead vehicle, Ethan sat rigid in the passenger seat, his jaw clenched so tight it hurt."Hold on, Jessica. Just hold on." His hands gripped his knees, knuckles white. The vehicles finally screeched to a halt several buildings away from the seaport, hidden in the shadows to avoid detection.Ethan was out of the car before it fully stopped. The moment his boots hit the pavement, Theo emerged from the darkness between two shipping containers and hurried toward him.“My Lord—”“What’s the update?” Ethan demanded, his voice clipped and urgent.“Adrian left barely a minute ago.” Theo revealed.Ethan’s heart lurched. “And Jessica?”“From what I overheard,” Theo continued quickly, “she caught

“Are you certain?” Ethan’s voice was sharp, his grip tightening on the phone. "Theo, are you absolutely certain about what you just said?”Lara’s head snapped toward him, concern flashing across her face.“I’m positive, My Lord,” Theo replied, his voice urgent. "I followed them from the warehouse where she was being held. I’m at the seaport now, hiding behind some shipping containers.”Ethan’s heart hammered in his chest.“They have her tied up,” Theo continued quickly. He paused, and Ethan could hear the tension in his breathing. "From what I overheard, they’re waiting for the order to… to finish it. They mentioned dumping her body in the water afterward.”Ethan shot to his feet, his chair scraping loudly against the floor.Lara’s head snapped toward him again, alarm flashing across her face.“Can’t you save her?” Ethan demanded, already pacing toward the window. His mind was racing, calculating distances, time, possibilities.“I can’t,” Theo said, frustration bleeding into his vo

Within minutes, the dining table had been transformed.Plates of roasted chicken glazed with honey and herbs sat steaming beside bowls of creamy mashed potatoes. There were grilled vegetables drizzled with olive oil, freshly baked bread still warm from the oven, and a rich beef stew that filled the room with its savory aroma. A bottle of wine stood uncorked at the center, flanked by crystal glasses.Ethan and Lara sat across from each other, the clinking of silverware the only sound for a few moments as they ate. Then he set down his fork and looked at her.“So,” he began carefully, “does this mean you’re back fully?”She paused mid-bite, then nodded with a faint smile. “Of course.”She set her fork down too, meeting his gaze. “I needed time to process everything, but… this is where I belong."Her smile faltered slightly. “We’ve all been through hell, but walking away won’t change what happened. And you shouldn’t have to face this alone.”He felt something loosen in his chest as relie
