Chapter 1: The Broken Halo

A heavy silver tray slammed into Declan Wilde’s chest as an intoxicated executive stumbled backward, sloshing icy champagne over Declan's white cuffs.

Declan's hands shot out instinctively. His fingers locked onto the edges of the tray with lightning precision, balancing four delicate crystal flutes without spilling a single drop.

"Watch where you're going, garbage!" the executive slurred, spittle flying as he readjusted his tuxedo jacket and staggered back into the roaring crowd of the Cromwell Capital banquet hall.

Declan glared at the man, he gripped the edge of the tray so tight, his knuckles turned white. To the sea of sharply tailored suits and shimmering evening gowns under the grand crystal chandeliers, Declan wasn't a human being with a spine, he was a nameless, low-tier IT contractor whose presence was tolerated only because he was married to the daughter of the Sawyer family.

Across the marble floor, Nala Sawyer stood in a sleek navy dress, her eyes glowing as her family crowded around Brody Cromwell.

Brody, dressed in a custom Italian suit, held court before three senior board members, gesturing grandly with a glass of scotch.

"The architecture isn't just fast, it’s unhackable," Brody announced, his voice carrying effortlessly over the string quartet. "When Cromwell Capital partners with Sawyer Dynamics to launch the main framework next month, we aren't just joining the national financial grid. We will control it. I personally oversaw the security logic to ensure no foreign intrusion can touch us."

A round of applause echoed through the group. Beside Brody , Martha Sawyer, Nala’s mother beamed with pride.

Declan watched them from the shadows of the service aisle, his chest burning with a quiet, suffocating fury. Every line of logic Brody was bragging about, Declan had written it line by line. He had spent three years sitting in a freezing garage, drinking lukewarm coffee until dawn, sacrificing his health to build up Nala's company while Brody spent his father’s money in VIP lounges.

Yet here Declan stood, holding their garbage while Brody stole his life's work.

"Declan!"

Martha detached herself from the circle and marched toward the refreshment station, her face souring the moment her eyes landed on him.

"Stop standing there like a creep," She hissed in a venomous whisper, waving her hand dismissively. "Take fresh champagne over to Mr. Sterling. And try not to walk like you're dragging farm equipment."

Declan felt the sting of her words slice straight into his pride. A lesser man would have broken, but Declan swallowed the hot iron in his throat and kept his chin level. "Yes, Mrs. Sawyer."

He stepped forward smoothly, keeping his posture firm as he approached the circle of elite guests.

"Here you are, Mr. Sterling," Declan said, offering the tray toward the elderly board member.

"Ah, thank you, son," the old man said, reaching out.

But before the old man could lift the glass, Martha thrust herself into the space, aggressively reaching for a flute. Her elbow struck Declan's arm with sharp, deliberate force.

The tray jerked. A glass tipped, crashing to the floor and splashing pale amber champagne straight over Brody ’s pristine leather shoes.

Crack!

Martha's hand shot out, striking Declan’s face with a brutal force. The sound echoed through the hall, surrounding conversations died instantly.

"You clumsy, useless parasite!" Martha shrieked, her voice cutting through the silence like a saw. She threw her hands up in dramatic horror. "Look what you’ve done! Can you do literally nothing right? You can't even hold a damn tray without ruining an entire evening!"

Brody looked down at his soaked shoe, his smooth features twisting into a dark, disgusted sneer. "Unbelievable," he muttered, lifting his foot. "Do you have any idea how much these shoes cost, Declan? More than your five years salary fixing monitors."

Snickers rippled through the surrounding crowd. Whispers flared up: "Is that Nala Sawyer' house-husband?"

"What an absolute embarrassment”

A scorching wave of humiliation rushed to Declan's body, stinging more than the slap. His heart hammered violently against his ribs, every human instinct screaming at him to hurl the silver tray into Brody 's face.

Instead, he took a deep, icy breath, forcing his pulse back down.

Slowly, Declan reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a clean white handkerchief, and offered it toward Brody.

“Here”

Brody stared at the cloth then up at Declan's calm, unblinking face. He’d expected Declan to apologize and offer to clean the shoes himself.

"Keep your filthy rag," Brody scoffed, slapping the handkerchief out of Declan's hand, sending it to the floor.

Then, with an arrogant smirk, he planted his feet heavily onto Declan's toes as he pushed past him.

The sharp pressure of Brody ’s heel ground into Declan's foot, but Declan didn't flinch. He stood like a steel pillar while Brody walked away, leaving wet footprints on the marble.

"Well, what are you waiting for? Clean that up, Declan," Martha spat at him.

Declan knelt down calmly, picking up the glass shards one by one. His fingers were steady.

"Declan" A voice called out and Declan turned.

Nala, his wife, stood at the entrance of a quiet side corridor, her face flushed, nervously twisting her diamond ring.

Declan stood up, wrapping the broken shards in a napkin, and walked over to her. He looked at his wife, the woman he had sacrificed three years of his life to build up.

"Yes Nala?" he said softly.

Nala didn't check if his hands were cut. She didn't ask if he was okay. She leaned in close, her tone sharp and filled with irritation. "What is wrong with you tonight? Why do you always have to make a scene?"

Declan stared at her in disbelief "I made a scene? Your mother shoved my arm, then slapped me, in front of everyone Nala…"

"I don't care about the details, Declan!" she cut him off, her voice laced with disgust. "Brody is out there securing Sawyer's Dynamics' future with the board, and you are standing in the middle of the room spilling drinks like a fool!"

Declan let out a low chuckle.

" Brody's the one securing Sawyer's future? I wrote the software Brody is bragging about, Nala. I built the code that's making those board members smile."

"Oh Please, stop!” Nala snapped. “So what if you helped with some backend scripts in the garage, Brody is the one turning it into an enterprise product. He has the vision and Cromwell Capital has the money to back it up."

She reached out, shoving his shoulder toward the rear service exit.

"Just leave, okay? You've done enough," she whispered cold-heartedly, refusing to look him in the eye.

"Go out through the back door. Go home. Before you humiliate me any further."

Declan looked at her for three long seconds. He saw no love in her eyes. No respect. Only complete, unadulterated shame that he was her husband.

"Fine," He said softly and turned without another word, tossed the broken glass into a bin, and pushed through the heavy metallic exit doors.

The autumn night was freezing. Rain poured down in heavy sheets, instantly soaking through his thin server vest and plastering his hair to his forehead.

Declan walked into the dark alleyway behind the venue. The cold water washed away the champagne, but it couldn't wash away the sickening ache of the humiliation. He had played the patient, loyal husband for three years and they had ground him into the dirt for it.

SCREEECH!

A sharp, deafening roar of heavy tires tearing through wet asphalt echoed through the narrow brick alleyway.

A matte-black, bulletproof SUV with dark tinted windows slammed to a halt, blocking the end of the alley.

The doors of the lead SUV flew open. Four heavily armed operators wearing black tactical armor, helmets, and silenced rifles stepped out, instantly fanning out to secure the perimeter.

Declan stopped walking.

An old man stepped into the pouring rain wearing a crisp, dark trench coat over a high-ranking military uniform. His sharp eyes scanned the shadows until they landed on Declan's soaked figure.

It was Vice-Director Harrison Grant.

Harrison marched forward, stopped three feet away from Declan, and brought his hand up to his forehead in a sharp, rigid military salute.

"Grand Commander Wilde!" Harrison shouted over the sound of the storm, his voice trembling slightly with urgency. "Forgive the sudden intrusion, sir!"

Behind him, all four tactical operators immediately dropped to one knee in the soaking mud, heads bowed in absolute reverence.

Declan slowly wiped a droplet of rainwater from his cheek, his cold eyes narrowing as he stared at the highest military official in the defense sector.

"Harrison," he said, his voice dropping into a dangerously low, sub-zero register that made the tactical team hold their breath. "What part of 'keep my civilian cover intact' is this exactly?"

Harrison flinched, taking a quick step back with his hands raised respectfully. "Sir! I know I breached protocol, but the situation inside Cromwell Capital has gone critical! Our deep-level probes just flagged an unauthorized data transfer!"

Harrison pulled an encrypted military tablet from his trench coat, holding it under a waterproof shield.

"Brody Cromwell didn't just steal your front-end code, Commander," Harrison reported urgently, his face pale. "He bypassed the local security protocol ten minutes ago trying to forcibly integrate the stolen framework with the central reserve server!”

Harrison tapped the screen, showing the server diagnostic logs.

"Say the word, Commander," Harrison urged, his eyes burning. "I have two tactical squads waiting around the corner. Give me the command, and we will breach the banquet hall, shut down Cromwell's terminal, and drag Brody out in cuffs right now!"

Declan stood in the freezing rain, looking past Harrison toward the glowing back windows of the banquet hall.

Inside, he could faintly see the shadows of Brody, Nala, and Martha clinking their champagne glasses, laughing as they celebrated their stolen glory.

A slow, chilling smile touched the corner of Declan’s lips. "Let the circus run a little longer and see where the show leads”

Harrison looked at Declan’s unyielding face, then let out a deep, knowing exhale. He snapped a second crisp salute. "Understood, Sir! We will monitor from the shadows!"
