They didn't poison anything," Vanessa snapped.

"They just helped me see reality."

"Reality?" Damian stood up again, fists tight at his sides.

"And what reality is that?"

"This one." She gestured around the room.

"Look at where you are, Damian. This isn't a temporary setback. This is serious. The government is involved. Your accounts are frozen."

He ran his hands through his hair in frustration. "I'm not done yet. This isn't my downfall, okay?"

He took a step forward, desperation lining his voice. "I'm going to bounce back. I just need more time. But I can't do it without you."

"I'll figure it out. I always do." He insisted.

"How?" she challenged, crossing her arms.

"What's your plan? Tell me exactly what you're doing to fix this!"

His throat constricted instantly, and he swallowed hard, trying to formulate something that sounded even halfway reasonable.

But it didn’t come.

"I... I'm still working on—" he stammered, "—I… I’m working on it, okay? It’s complicated—"

“We’re here,” Ethan said, pulling the car into a parking spot in front of Jessica’s apartment building. She glanced out the window, her gaze lingering on the familiar brick facade of her building. “That was fast.”She turned back to him with a small smile. “Thanks for the ride. Although you really didn’t have to.”“I know,” Ethan replied, his tone light. "But I wanted to.”The drive had been surprisingly comfortable—neither of them dwelling on the heaviness of everything that had happened. Instead, they’d talked about random things—her favorite coffee shop down the street, how much he missed actually cooking, the ridiculousness of some of the mansion’s older décor that Magnus had insisted on keeping, and some other things. It had been normal. And Ethan had realized, somewhere along the way, how much he’d needed that. She shifted in her seat, her expression turning curious. “Actually, there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.”He glanced at her. “What is it?”“Last night,” she b

“I’m waiting, Theo. What are you doing here?" Ethan’s voice cut through the silence again, sharper this time.Theo swallowed hard, his throat dry, his mind finally catching up to the situation. He straightened slightly, his hands dropping to his sides as he forced himself to meet Ethan’s gaze.“My Lord,” he began, his voice steadier now but still laced with nervousness. "It’s not what it looks like.”Ethan’s expression didn’t change.“It’s not what it looks like?" He repeated slowly, his tone dripping with skepticism. He took another step forward, closing the distance between them. “Is that what you’re going with?”Theo opened his mouth to respond, but Ethan cut him off.“So you also consider me weak and incompetent?"Ethan scoffed. "Unbelievable."Theo’s jaw dropped, confusion flashing across his face. “What? My Lord, no—”“Didn’t I tell you earlier to leave the research to me?” Ethan continued, his voice rising slightly. “I explicitly told you I would handle this. That I didn’t nee

The engine hummed steadily beneath Ethan and Jessica as he shifted the gear into drive. His hand rested on the wheel, ready to pull away from the driveway, when a sharp sensation hit him.It started as a prickling at the base of his skull—like cold fingers trailing down his spine. Then it spread, sinking deeper into his chest, tightening around his ribs like a vise. His breath caught. His hands tensed on the wheel, knuckles going white. He didn’t know what. Didn’t know why. But every instinct he had—every supernatural sense that came with being the King of the World—was telling him to go back to the chamber. It started as a whisper and grew into a shout he couldn’t ignore. His brow furrowed deeply, his eyes narrowing as if trying to see through walls, through distance, to whatever was pulling at him.The ring on his finger also felt suddenly heavier, like it was trying to tell him something. His foot hovered over the accelerator, trembling slightly, but he couldn’t press it.The insti

“I’ll be leaving this evening.”The words Ethan him like a physical blow. His eyes widened in shock, and before he even realized what he was doing, he crossed the room in three long strides, returning to the chair beside the bed.He sat down and his hands instinctively reached out, grasping hers.“Why?” The word came out sharper than he intended, laced with urgency. The touch sent a jolt through Jessica, spreading from where their palms met up through her arms and into her chest. Her heart stumbled over itself, and for a moment, she forgot what she’d been about to say.She could feel the calluses on his palms, the strength in his grip—not tight enough to hurt, but firm enough to anchor her in place. It was such a simple thing. Just hands touching hands. But it felt like so much more.Like a silent confession. Like a promise he couldn’t speak aloud. It was overwhelming. And she didn’t want him to let go.She swallowed hard, trying to steady her breathing. He continued, his voice risin

  • Chapter 298

Ethan stood outside the guest room door, his hand raised to knock. He hesitated for just a moment, his mind still half-occupied with the scrolls he’d been reading in the Chamber—ancient texts that had yielded nothing useful so far.Theo had called him minutes ago to inform him that Jessica was asking for him.Ethan had set down the scroll immediately, abandoning his research without a second thought. Now, standing here, he knocked twice.“Come in,” Jessica’s voice called from inside.Ethan pushed the door open and stepped into the room. She was dressed in fresh clothes—a simple long-sleeved shirt and comfortable pants that someone from the mansion staff must have provided. Her hair was still damp from what looked like a recent shower, falling loosely around her shoulders. But the second he looked at her, noticing how she was sitting on the edge of the bed with her hands folded in her lap and her shoulders tensed, he frowned, realizing something was definitely off.“Someone said you wa

  • Chapter 297

Ethan didn't return directly to the mansion after leaving Adrian’s villa.Instead, he’d made a detour to the prison facility where Elara was being held. She looked up when he entered the waiting room, a faint smile curving her lips.“Well, well,” she said. "The King himself. To what do I owe this unexpected pleasure?”Ethan didn’t waste time with pleasantries. “Is there really a way to kill me?”Her smile widened slightly. “Straight to the point. I like that.”“Answer the question,” he said coldly. She studied him for a moment, tilting her head. “Why the sudden concern? Has someone been whispering dangerous ideas in your ear?”“Elara—”“No,” she interrupted, her tone turning serious. “There isn’t.”Ethan’s jaw tightened. “You claimed you could kill me before.”“I lied,” Elara said simply. She leaned back against the cold wall, crossing her legs. “It was a threat. A bluff to make you unease while I made my moves which...”Her voice dropped. "Which failed."She paused, her gaze sharp.
