The Digital Gate

The sky above downtown Seattle did not just change color; it tore open like wet paper.

A massive digital clock hung high in the clouds, glowing with bright green numbers that clicked down from sixty seconds. Thousands of red contract papers rained down from the storm, swirling through the air like leaves in a hurricane. Every paper carried the golden seal of the Special Bureau, and every single one was blank at the bottom, waiting for a signature.

Look at them, Elena said. Her voice was steady, but her obsidian wings tightened close around her shoulders as she stared up at the digital clock. They are not trying to capture us anymore, Kyle. They are rewriting the whole zone.

Director Thorne picked himself up from the smashed side of his black sedan. He wiped a streak of blood from his cheek and let out a sharp, ugly laugh.

You think breaking a few contracts makes you free? Thorne sneered, pointing up at the massive golden gate forming inside the purple clouds. "The board of directors is stepping down right now. You cannot resign from a game that runs the entire universe.

I did not waste time arguing with him. I pulled my heavy wooden stamp from my coat and clicked my cheap plastic pen. My hands did not shake. The fear I had felt back in the apartment was gone, replaced by a cold, sharp focus.

Run, I told Elena.

No, she said, stepping right beside me instead of stepping back. Her amber eyes flashed with a dangerous light. "We are done running from their rules, Kyle. If they want to rewrite the city, we will show them what happens when someone edits the source code.

Before Thorne could move, Elena raised her hand and snapped her fingers. A wave of dark kinetic energy shot out from her palm, hitting the pavement beneath Thorne's feet. The concrete cracked open, swallowing his polished shoes and pinning him in place like a wooden stake.

Stay right there and watch," Elena said, her voice dropping into a cold, heavy tone that made even me look twice.

The digital clock in the sky hit zero.

A deafening horn sound shook the street. From the golden gate in the clouds, a massive shadow stepped down onto the empty air. It looked like a giant man dressed in a sharp corporate suit, but his face was completely blank, just a smooth mirror reflecting the rainy street below.

Subject Kyle Vance, a voice boomed from the sky, sounding like a thousand speakers playing at the same time. "And asset Elena Vance. You are in breach of universal compliance code zero-one. Submit your signatures immediately or face total deletion."

The giant hand reached down from the clouds, blotting out the streetlights and plunging the entire block into heavy darkness. The pressure of the magic made the air feel thick and hard to breathe.

Kyle, Elena said quickly, her fingers brushing against my arm. Look at the giant's cuff links. They are control stamps. If we break those stamps, the whole gate closes.

How do you know that? I asked, looking down at her in surprise.

Because I read father's hidden notes before the Bureau raided our house five years ago, she replied, a sharp, calculating smile touching her lips. He did not just try to hide me, Kyle. He planned to crash their entire system from the inside. And we are going to finish his work.

The giant hand plunged lower, smashing the remaining cars in the street into flat metal pancakes. The wind from its descent threatened to blow us off our feet.

Hold onto my jacket, I ordered.

I pulled out my red wooden stamp, slammed it against the palm of my hand, and punched the air upward. Golden runes shot out like a rocket, forming a massive glowing ladder that reached straight up toward the giant's wrist.

Elena leaped onto the golden steps first, her dark wings carrying her upward with blinding speed. I followed right behind her, my iron gun ready in my left hand while my right hand held the heavy stamp.

Officers and drones swarmed out from the golden gate, trying to block our path, but Elena cut through them with ruthless efficiency. She used her wings to bat drones out of the air and swept the guards off the glowing steps with sharp kicks, never once hesitating. She was not just a frightened girl anymore; she was an executioner of the system.

We reached the giant's wrist in seconds. The control stamp was a massive golden block strapped to his arm, glowing with thousands of shifting letters.

Give me the pen, Elena demanded, holding out her hand.

I tossed my cheap plastic pen to her without a second thought. She caught it out of the air, spun around, and drove the plastic tip straight into the center of the golden control stamp with all her weight.

A piercing alarm shrieked through the sky. The giant let out a roar that sounded like grinding metal.

Delete this, Elena whispered.

She clicked the pen twice. The plastic barrel cracked, releasing a blinding wave of red and gold light that rushed across the giant's arm like wildfire.

The giant froze. The digital clock in the sky shattered into a million glowing pieces, raining down harmlessly through the rain.

Before we could catch our breath, the ground beneath our feet vanished entirely, dropping us straight down into a bottomless white void.

The giant golden envelope burst open with a sharp sound like glass snapping under heavy pressure, spraying bright yellow light across the frozen lobby.I grabbed Elena’s arm and yanked her backward just as a sheet of thick paper shot out of the envelope like a knife. It slammed into the marble reception desk, cutting straight through the wood as if it were soft paper."Stay behind me," I said, pulling my iron gun from my coat and keeping my eyes locked on the glowing paper."Do not worry about me, Kyle," Elena replied, her voice cold and steady. She reached into her pocket and pulled out my cheap plastic pen, spinning it between her fingers with a calm precision that showed she was ready for whatever was coming. "The Higher-Ups think a fancy summons will scare us. They do not know we are already done following their rules."The frozen security guards and office workers standing around the lobby did not move. They remained stuck in place like stone statues, their eyes completely blank,

The heavy metal door of Sub-Basement 4 blew inward with a loud crash, sending chunks of concrete and twisted iron flying across the room.Smoke filled the air instantly. Through the thick grey haze, a figure stepped over the broken door frame, holding a smoking laser rifle. It was not Director Thorne, and it was not one of the faceless guards from the upper floors. It was Elena. She did not look like the trapped asset we had seen on the red holographic screen a moment ago. Her eyes burned with a bright amber light, and her dark obsidian wings spread wide, filling the narrow basement with a fierce, pulsing energy. She walked into the room with absolute confidence, her boots clicking sharply against the concrete floor."You took your time," I said, letting out a breath I did not realize I had been holding as I stood up from my desk."I had to clear the lobby security first," Elena replied, a sharp, cold smile touching her lips. She tossed a heavy silver keycard onto my desk. "The upper

The heavy metal door of Sub-Basement 4 clicked shut with a sharp, final sound that locked me inside a pitch-black room.I stood still in the dark, my hand hovering over the wooden stamp on my desk. The air felt heavy, tasting of ozone and wet iron. The flickering fluorescent lights overhead buzzed once, then flashed back on with a blinding white glare that made me squint. The cardboard box on my desk was gone. In its place sat a glowing red terminal screen that rose directly out of the wood like a digital hologram.Words formed across the screen in bright, neat letters.Employee 404-A: Kyle Vance. The blinding white light did not burn my eyes; it washed over me like cold river water, stripping away the weight of the master ledger and the hum of the corporate servers. When my boots finally hit solid ground, the smell of ozone and burning ink was completely gone. In its place came the sharp, familiar scent of wet asphalt, roasting hot dogs from a corner cart, and the steady, heavy drumming of Seattle rain hitting a metal umbrella.I blinked hard, shaking my head to clear the ringing in my ears.I was standing on a crowded downtown sidewalk right in front of the municipal building where I had spent ten years stamping compliance reports in a dark basement. People in business suits rushed past us with plastic umbrellas, holding briefcases and talking loudly on phones. No one looked up at the sky. No giant digital clocks hung in the clouds, and no glowing red contracts floated down like snow.Elena? I spun around, my hands dropping instantly to my belt to check for my iron gun and st

The heavy glass doors slammed shut behind us with a loud click, locking us inside a round room that hummed with blue light.Director Thorne pounded his fists against the outside of the glass, his face twisted in pure anger. His neat suit was torn, and his calm corporate smile was completely gone. But he could not get in. The golden light from Elena's broken pen had sealed the security lock from the inside.Look at him, Elena said, her voice completely calm. She turned away from the glass door and walked toward the center of the room. He thought he owned the whole building. He forgot that the lower staff always hold the keys to the basement.I looked around the room. There were no desks here, and no faceless workers typing on light screens. Instead, the center of the round room held a massive stone pillar covered in glowing ancient carvings and modern computer cables. At the top of the pillar sat a giant, open book bound in black leather. The master ledger. Is that it? I asked, walking

  • The White Room

The white void did not have a floor, and falling through it felt like dropping straight down the center of an endless computer screen.I clutched my heavy wooden stamp in one hand and grabbed for Elena as we spun through the bright light. The wind roared past our ears, loud and sharp, blowing our hair back until we hit a hard, flat surface with a loud thud that knocked the wind right out of my lungs."Get up, Kyle," Elena said, her voice sharp and steady.I rolled onto my back and blinked against the blinding white light. There were no rain-soaked streets here, no broken asphalt, and no dark alleys. We were standing in a massive, perfectly square room made entirely of smooth white glass. Endless rows of floating glass desks stretched out into the distance in every direction, and behind each desk sat a faceless worker in a clean grey suit, typing furiously on keyboards made of pure light."Where are we?" I asked, pushing myself up to my feet and checking my belt to make sure my iron gu
