Leo Romano stood at the far side of the ballroom, drink in hand, his gaze locked sharply onto the scene unfolding before him. He watched Mariya Carter practically throw herself at Karvel Cross —a man Leo had initially overlooked.

Who the hell is he? Leo thought, irritation gnawing at him. And why does he command her attention so easily?

The way Mariya—an intelligent, poised woman—abandoned their conversation without hesitation… for a man like that? Leo's pride took a brutal hit. He had thought they were connecting, that she was impressed by his wealth and status as she should be.

Leo's eyes stayed trained on Karvel, cold and calculating. "That man," he said smoothly, nodding toward Karvel, who was now casually sipping champagne near one of the fountains. "Who is he?"

Leo's face showed the internal struggle between his wounded pride and his political instincts. The public image he'd cultivated so carefully could be destroyed overnight if he was seen as ungrateful and vindictive."He disrespected me, Mariya," Leo said finally, his voice carrying frustrated resignation."No one treats Leo Romano like a subordinate.""Then don't let him treat you like one," Mariya suggested carefully."Go to him yourself. Show him that you're secure enough in your power to meet him on his terms. That's what a truly confident leader would do."She's asking me to bow to his demands, Leo thought with distaste. But perhaps there's wisdom in appearing magnanimous rather than petty.Thompson cleared his throat diplomatically."Sir, Mrs. Romano makes valid points about the political implications. Perhaps a direct meeting would serve your interests better than open warfare."Leo considered this advice for several long moments, his anger gradually cooling as his strategic mind

The Romano estate's private study trembled with Leo's barely contained rage as Morrison and his three companions stood before their employer's desk, their faces still bearing the red marks of Sebastian Sterling's public humiliation."Let me make sure I understand this correctly," Leo said, his voice dangerously quiet as he paced behind his mahogany desk."You went to retrieve Sebastian Sterling for our scheduled meeting, and he slapped all four of you like disobedient children?""Sir," Morrison began hesitantly, "the man was completely unreasonable. He refused to show you proper respect and—""Proper respect?" Leo's voice exploded with fury."He humiliated my security team in a public establishment and sent you crawling back to me with your tails between your legs!"The four men shifted uncomfortably, their professional pride shattered by the evening's events.None of them had ever encountered someone who could move with Sebastian Sterling's speed and complete lack of fear."What exac

Sebastian called out loudly, throwing hundred-dollar bills at the dancers while his bodyguards maintained a protective perimeter around his VIP table.Playing the role of a lottery-winning thug requires careful attention to detail, Sebastian thought as he watched the club's patrons eye him with a mixture of fear and envy.Every public appearance must reinforce the image. The club's atmosphere was thick with smoke, loud music, and the kind of desperate decadence that attracted Carson City's criminal elite.Sebastian's presence had drawn considerable attention from other patrons who recognized his growing reputation for violence and unpredictability."Mr. Sterling!" the club's manager approached his

Relief at his wife's safety warred with irritation at owing a debt to someone he'd been planning to crush."Sir," Thompson entered the study carrying a stack of termination papers. "The security team responsible for Mrs. Romano's protection has been dismissed as requested.""Good," Leo said curtly, not taking his eyes off the television screen. "Their incompetence nearly cost me my wife. I want them blacklisted from every security firm in the city.""What about Sebastian Sterling, sir?" Thompson asked carefully. "The man did save Mrs. Romano's life in front of thousands of witnesses."Leo's jaw tightened as he considered t

"Nothing direct," Karvel replied after a moment's consideration. "But make sure she understands that some questions are dangerous to ask."Meanwhile, Leo Romano paced restlessly in his private study, his mind churning with ideas for tormenting Karvel Cross. The decision to spare his life in favor of psychological warfare had seemed brilliant when Mariya suggested it, but now Leo was struggling to devise appropriately creative tortures.Simply ruining his finances won't be enough, Leo thought with frustration. The man lives in a cheap hotel and dresses like a vagrant. Financial pressure won't break someone who's already poor."Thompson," Leo called to his security chief, "I need creative ideas for making someone's life miserable without killing them outright.""What kind of pressure are you considering, sir?"
