224.

The call came too early in the morning for Devin's liking. He had barely taken three sips of his coffee and was getting ready to leave when one of his men knocked.

"Come in." Devin said, not liking the feeling he got.

The man entered into his study, looking pale and very sweaty.

"Sir." The man said. "It's the president of the senate. We have reports that he's missing."

Devin set his cup down and leaned back in his chair, eyes narrowing.

"Missing?"

"Yes, sir. No one has seen him since last night. His driver says he never made it home, and his phone is dead. Security detail gone too."

Devin couldn't believe it. He rubbed the bridge of his nose, trying to fight the sudden pounding in his head.

"Fuck. This is not good, not good at all."

The guard nodded.

"Yes sir. But what should we do now?"

Devin waved him off.

"For now, just get out."

"Okay, but sir—"

"Leave me the fuck alone! I need to think." Devin exclaimed.

The lights sparkled above, making the polished marble floors look wonderfully ethereal. The charity gala looked beautiful from the outside, with the music coming from the grand piano, and the chatter and “rich laughter” flowing through the air, champagne glasses clinking. Everyone was dressed in their best attire with fake smiles plastered on faces, more money than they needed in their pockets ready to be flaunted. But beneath the glamour, Devin Stone had already pulled strings to make this an event to be remembered, and not just as a charity function. His eyes swept the crowd as he stood near the main table, and his tall glass of wine was untouched. To anyone else, he looked calm, and controlled, as he was the perfect host of the evening. But in reality, his mind was cold as steel. He had invited so many people on short notice, claiming that it was for a good cause, but the night wasn’t simply about charity. Tonight was about bait. “Mr Stone.” A senator’s wife greeted, brushin

    230. Petra sat in her father’s study, her fingers drumming on the arm of the chair. She could hear the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner, remembering how she had always hated the sound and likened it to dreadful things. Her father sat on the other side of the desk, scribbling something down as if she wasn’t even there. “Enough, I’m here.” Petra said, tired of being ignored. Her father lifted his head slowly, his dark eyes narrowing. “Excuse me, dear?” “I said enough, papa.” Petra repeated, louder this time. “I’m here because I’m done following your orders. I’m not your soldier, I’m not your dog.” The room grew still as she said that. Her father put his pen down carefully, as though her words had been a personal insult to him. “You’ve lost your mind, dear.” He said in a calm voice. “I’ve never sent you to do anything for me.” “No, not directly.” Petra snapped, leaning forward. “For the first time in my life, I’ve found it. I’m sick of you, papa! You made

    229. Eva had never been the type to wait for things. When she wanted something, she went after it with a smile. Or a frown. Sometimes with a gun, it depended on the situation. That evening, she had arranged everything to perfection, the candles, the wine, and a table set for two inside one of the smaller dining rooms of her estate. It wasn’t grand like the hall she used for parties. This room was more intimate, and the fragrances in the air were the type to spark some kind of emotion in one’s heart. Devin walked in with a frown on his face. He hated the place already. It was beautiful, but the fact that it was Eva’s made him feel disgust all over. “You asked for me.”Devin said flatly when he arrived, putting his hands in his pockets. “What is this?” Eva’s eyes glittered as she leaned forward on the table, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. “Dinner. Just dinner, don’t look so suspicious.” “With you?” Devin raised a brow. “That already sounds like I’m getting poisone

    228. Devin sat at his desk. A gun lay on the desk, and it was black and heavy, though he hadn’t touched it yet. He had ordered a new one specifically for this purpose. He couldn’t believe what he was about to do, but he had to do it. The guards brought Yvonne Hall in. She was dressed sharp, as always, long fitted pants, neat blouse and her hair tied in place like she had everything under control. But Devin knew better. She looked taken aback the moment she saw him sitting alone with that expression on his face. “Devin.” She said, crossing her arms. “You asked to see me?” He didn’t answer right away. He gestured at the chair opposite his his. “Sit, Hall.” She hesitated, then pulled the chair back and lowered herself onto it. She tried to look calm, but Devin could see her fingers tightening around the edge of her skirt. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. “Do you know why you’re here, Yvonne?” Her lips went off, giving him a sweet smile. The smile

    227. Devin yelled as he moved through the dark room like a storm breaking after days of silence. The place was supposed to be sealed off of sound, but Devin made so much noise that the sound barrier was crashed. Everyone in the mansion was terrified when they heard him. “Fuck this! Fuck all of it!” he shouted, hurling a glass across the room. It smashed against the wall, the shards scattering across the floor. His chest heaved, his fists trembling as if the fury burning inside him had finally eaten through the chains he had always wrapped around it. The small, wiry, and careful servant who had brought in things for him to destroy, sat in the shadows, pretending to be nothing more than another servant. His name was Kellan, but Eva only called him “the shadow.” He had been watching Devin for a while, noting the way the man always seemed so calm, so in control, never raising his voice unless it was calculated. But tonight was different. Devin’s eyes were blazing when he requeste
