Chapter 1: The Most Pathetic Death
last update2026-08-26 16:40:14

The air in Sector 7 didn’t just smell like smoke; it smelled like the end of the world. Kaelion Vexaris crouched behind a rusted slab of what used to be an apartment complex, his fingers trembling as he gripped the hilt of a notched iron dagger.

“Kael, seriously, we need to move. Now,” a voice hissed from behind him.

Kaelion turned his head slightly, seeing Miller, a man whose face was caked in more soot than skin. Behind Miller stood a woman clutching a sobbing toddler and two other men who looked ready to bolt at the first sign of a shadow.

“I know, Miller. I know,” Kaelion whispered back, his voice cracking. “But there’s a scout out there. If we run across the open plaza, it’ll pick us off before we hit the alley.”

“You’re an F-rank scavenger, not a tactician,” Miller spat, his eyes darting around frantically. “Your job is to find the holes in the fence, not play hero. If we stay here, we’re just sitting ducks for whatever crawled out of that rift.”

“I’m the only one with a weapon!” Kaelion hissed, gesturing to the dull blade. “Even if it’s just an F-rank scrap-iron piece, it’s better than your bare hands.”

“A tooth-pick? You’re gonna fight a Slag-Beast with a tooth-pick?” Miller laughed, a jagged, hysterical sound. “We’re dead. We’re already dead. Look at your status, man. You’ve got, what, ten points in Strength? I’ve seen house cats with more lethality.”

“Shut up, Miller,” the woman, Sarah, whispered through her tears. “He’s trying. At least he’s trying.”

“Trying gets you buried!” Miller gripped Kaelion’s shoulder, shaking him. “Hey, F-rank. Listen to me. The shelter is three blocks away. We run, we pray, and maybe the beasts are busy eating someone slower. That’s the only plan that works in this hellhole.”

Kaelion looked at the toddler, whose wide, terrified eyes were fixed on him. The kid didn't know about Ranks or Systems. He just knew the world was screaming.

“I’ll draw it out,” Kaelion said, his voice suddenly steadying.

“You’ll what?” Miller asked, blinking.

“The scout. It’s a Slag-Beast, right? They hunt by heat and vibration. If I make enough noise and run toward the construction site, you guys can loop around the back of the pharmacy. It’s a straight shot to the shelter gates from there.”

“Kael, don’t be an idiot,” Sarah said, her voice trembling. “You can’t take one of those things. Even the D-rank guards struggle with them.”

“I’m not gonna take it,” Kaelion said, forcing a grin that didn’t reach his eyes. “I’m gonna outrun it. I’ve spent my whole life running from bullies, creditors, and bad luck. I’m an expert.”

“You’re gonna die, kid,” Miller said, though his grip on Kaelion’s shoulder loosened. “You know that, right? There’s no respawn. This isn’t a game.”

“Then make sure it’s worth it,” Kaelion replied. “When I start yelling, you count to three and move. Don’t look back. Don’t wait for me. Just get that kid to the gate.”

“Kaelion…” Sarah started.

“Go. Get ready,” Kaelion interrupted, stepping out from the shadow of the debris.

He took a deep breath, the acrid air burning his lungs. He felt the weight of his 'F-Rank' status like a physical leaden cloak. In a world where the System had turned reality into a nightmare of stats and skills, he was a rounding error. He had no active skills. No mana pool. Just a rusted knife and a desperate heart.

“Hey! Over here, you overgrown pile of charcoal!” Kaelion screamed at the top of his lungs.

He hammered his dagger against a metal pipe, the clanging echoing through the desolate street. A low, guttural growl vibrated through the pavement. From the ruins of a nearby cafe, a mass of molten rock and black sludge pulled itself into the light. The Slag-Beast. It was six feet of raw, burning malice, its "eyes" glowing like embers.

“Yeah, you! Come and get the F-rank snack!” Kaelion yelled, his heart hammering against his ribs.

The beast roared, a sound like grinding tectonic plates, and charged.

“Run! Now!” Kaelion shouted over his shoulder.

He didn't wait to see if Miller and the others moved. He bolted toward the construction site, his boots skidding on loose gravel. Behind him, the heavy, rhythmic thuds of the beast grew louder. It was fast. Way too fast.

“Come on, come on, faster!” he hissed to himself, his legs burning. “Just a little further!”

He dove through a gap in a chain-link fence, the metal tearing at his jacket. He scrambled up a pile of concrete debris, looking for a way to climb higher. If he could just get to the second floor of the skeletal building, he might be able to lose it in the rafters.

A shadow loomed over him.

“Oh, crap,” Kaelion breathed.

The Slag-Beast didn't just run; it leaped. It cleared the fence in a single, fluid motion, landing ten feet in front of him. It blocked the only path up.

“Okay… okay. Easy, boy,” Kaelion said, holding his dagger out. His hands were shaking so hard he almost dropped it. “I’m not very tasty. Mostly skin and bone. Lots of bitterness. You’d hate the aftertaste.”

The beast lunged.

Kaelion swung the dagger. It was a pathetic arc. The blade struck the creature’s shoulder and snapped like a twig. The metal didn't even leave a scratch on the hardened obsidian hide.

“Well… that went about as well as expected,” Kaelion muttered.

The beast’s clawed hand, glowing with internal heat, slammed into Kaelion’s chest. The force sent him flying backward, his body smashing into a brick wall. He felt his ribs cave in, the sound of snapping bone loud in the quiet of the ruins.

He fell to the ground, coughing up a mouthful of copper-tasting blood.

“Damn it,” he wheezed, clutching his stomach. “That… really hurts.”

The Slag-Beast stalked toward him, sensing its prey was finished. It raised a massive, molten limb, the heat radiating from it singeing Kaelion’s eyebrows.

Kaelion looked up, his vision blurring. He could see the silhouettes of Miller and Sarah disappearing into the distance, nearing the safety of the shelter.

“At least… they made it,” he whispered, his voice bubbling with blood. “I guess… being a loser… was finally good for something.”

The beast’s claw descended. It wasn't a quick death. The heated talons tore through his abdomen, disemboweling him with a sickening squelch. Kaelion screamed, a high, thin sound that died in his throat as his lungs filled with fluid.

The beast pulled back, leaving him a broken, bleeding mess in the dirt. Kaelion watched his own life spill out onto the gray concrete, the red startlingly bright against the ash.

Is this it? he thought. Twenty-two years of being nothing, just to die in the dirt?

His heart gave a final, erratic thump. His eyes glazed over, the world fading into a cold, suffocating black.

Back in the physical world, the Slag-Beast turned away, satisfied with its kill. It began to lumber back toward the plaza, looking for more heat signatures.

Suddenly, the creature stopped. It turned its molten head back toward the corpse of the F-rank human.

Kaelion’s body wasn't turning cold. It wasn't turning to ash.

A small, flickering spark ignited in the center of his shredded chest. Within seconds, the spark erupted into a roaring pillar of crimson and gold flame. The heat was so intense that the concrete beneath him began to liquefy, turning into a pool of glowing glass.

The Slag-Beast roared in confusion, backing away as the fire intensified.

The golden light became blinding, expanding outward in a shockwave that shattered the remaining windows of the surrounding buildings. The ruins of Sector 7 were bathed in a brilliance that rivaled the sun.

Inside the light, the mangled remains of Kaelion Vexaris began to knit back together. Bone fused, flesh wove itself anew, and his heart—now beating with a rhythm like a war drum—ignited with a power that the world had not seen in a thousand years.

Kaelion’s eyes snapped open. They weren't brown anymore. They were molten gold.

“My turn,” he whispered, his voice echoing with the power of a thousand suns.

The Slag-Beast didn't even have time to roar before the world turned to fire.

The smoke of Sector 7 didn’t just choke the lungs; it froze them.
