Beating from Sofia

Damian could be seen sitting in a cross-legged position, he seemed to be meditating, suddenly he stood to his feet and at the same time another figure sitting in the room stood up from a chair in the corner.

“Are you done with the second cycle” Sofia asks Damian, for the past week they seemed to have been spending more time with each other, she had been sitting waiting for him for about an hour, after freshening up she had joined him in his room meditating but she ended a long time ago and it appeared like Damian was still fully immersed in his, it wasn’t like she could find out actually as his eyes had been closed for the past week, with nothing to do she picked up a book to read and sat on a chair in the corner of the room.

“No, progress is too slow” Damian answered, he and Sofia had become closer, it was in a way what Kale wanted, just he never expected it to happen like this, he wanted them both to be close so the probability of Sofia and Damian passing the exam through teamwork would increase, with how close they were communication was the least of their problems although they were still many things he couldn’t speak on that were obvious to her the fact she didn’t press those matters made him glad.

“You know today dad’s going to ask” Sofia reminded him, Kale hadn’t asked him anything about the martial hall duel since that day, that was what Sofia meant implying he was going to question that day.

“I know, it’s really nothing” Damian replied as he walked towards the door “It’s time, let’s go” Damian added implying to the two hours break Kale had given them.

Walking down the stairs to the parlor Damian and Sofia could see Kale sitting on a couch, he looked a bit anxious though it wasn’t completely obvious, they could still tell, they both walked into the parlor and sat down, none saying a word as everyone seemed to observe each other-well it was mainly the kids waiting for Kale to speak.

Looks of confusion were beginning to appear on Damian and Sofia’s face as they wondered if Kale was lost in thoughts, maybe they should have announced their arrival, or would it have interrupted his thought process, while these thoughts ran through their minds, Kale finally spoke.

“Damian, a week ago you said you were going to participate in the martial hall duel announcing yourself as the Heart’s contender, was that just to defend the current predicament?” Kale spoke going straight to the point posing a question.

“Mr. Heart, I meant my very words when I declared myself as the Heart’s contender. I will participate on behalf of the Heart family” Damian immediately replied, his voice carrying a more formal tone.

Kale nodded acknowledging Damian’s answer seemingly seeing it as satisfactory “Good, I knew you weren’t one to joke around with such serious matters, now let me ask you…Are you planning on fighting yourself or is he fighting in your stead” Kale asked, his voice much heavier towards the end.

Damian had already expected this question but he didn’t expect to be asked if Lucifer was going to fight instead, “I actually plan on participating” Damian answered honestly, he actually wanted to test his current capabilities, especially as he had leveled up a few times during the week, and what he had been practicing from Lucifer

_A few days back_

“Kid, you were interested in a source of energy, would you like to learn something?” Damian and Sofia had just finished their training with Kale, while Damian returned to his room to continue meditating hoping to increase his concentration and reduce the energy consumption of the eyes of darkness, Lucifer asked.

Damian appeared confused as he looked around, there was nothing such as an energy source in his room, how did Lucifer plan on teaching anything that had to do with a source of energy “Sure, but where’s the source of energy” he was searching for a source of energy to cultivate his skills in it hoping for any advancement of any kind.

Lucifer almost hissed in annoyance “I’m the source of energy you moron” he cursed before calming down, noticing Damian keep quiet and didn’t reply he continued “What if I told you there’s a way to tap into my energy and use it” Lucifer continued before Damian could ask he added “It might not be easy to learn and get used to without the eyes of darkness but you can try” Lucifer added.

With that Lucifer explained how the energy would feel and how to use it, but one thing Damian realized was he could actually increase his own energy stat through meditation and the method Lucifer thought him, and with the eyes of darkness it was even easier than Lucifer said it to be, but one thing he wasn’t sure of was if Lucifer knew he was using the eyes of darkness, he could only shrug it off.

Damian called out his stats in his mind, it had increased significantly compared to last time, luckily for him, his stats seemed to increase with training, the only concept he didn’t understand was how he leveled up, the system just seemed to determine his level by itself though it had never jumped a level.

“Damian the duel is a week’s time, you’re our best chance as we have no more students under our martial hall that can contest for us…” Kale said then he simply paused, he stood up and then left, he seemed to have more to say but couldn’t, he looked disappointed that Lucifer wasn’t the one participating but didn’t speak. He just wanted Damian to understand the gravity of the duel.

“He wasn’t impressed, was he?” Damian asked no one in particular then he turned to face Sofia who could only let out a wry smile.

_Beep_

Sofia’s wristband made a beeping sound, she turned to look at Damian who’s band also beeped, Damian simply nodded, Sofia and decided to set up a training session every afternoon, it was meant to be more of a sparring session though they had never actually stuck to the routine, Kale had been the one to suggest their training together since they were both going to take the oncoming exam, but most times they spent the time channeling their genesis and with Sofia frightened of Lucifer the actual probability of them training lessened, but for once they actually decided to stick to it.

In the training hall both Sofia and Damian had already changed into the Heart’s martial hall attire.

“Damian, there’s something I’ll like to request of you” Sofia suddenly spoke before they began their spar, apparently a bit reluctant, “I rather you forfeit instead of participating in the duel” she said the reluctance to speak in her voice vanished after she started.

“….” Damian had a look of confusion and had no actual way to reply, he could only wait for her to explain, she had told him a lot of things a lot of times but nothing about the duel.

Seeing she had his full attention she continued “I actually thought…I thought he was going to participate..." she spoke before pausing obviously referring to Lucifer “but if it’s you that fighting, you should know the student that had been acknowledged as the best student hailed from the Heart’s hall a decade ago in the last duel but he later held a grudge against our family, when the members of the Heart disappeared, his father was among the expedition team, but now that figure has already left the island and gone into a lone organization but he has a little brother and he’s with the silvers, they say the younger brothers talent is greater than the older, just like his older brother he’s a Faze rank with the ability to beat an Ect. I don’t want any mishap to happen to you, you’re still growing and have potential” Sofia explained.

Damian nodded lightly in understanding, he had heard the story of the members of the Heart that went on the expedition but he didn’t know all the members that went of the expedition, he was only aware that the greatest loss was the disappearance of Claire.

“I appreciate your concern but I’m going to participate, if it’s just an Ect rank I’ll try” Damian replied almost casually, she now actually sounded like a big sister, it reminded him of his little brother ‘Arain’.

“Just an Ect rank…” Sofia muttered Damian’s words her tone low sounding confused, did he think she was joking or the Ect rank was just so easy to defeat at a lower rank her expression gradually turning solemn “If you think it’s just an Ect rank let’s see how you fair against one” she seemed annoyed that he simply brushed off her warning.

“Oooooo, someone’s so in trouble” Damian heard a voice in his head but he ignored it as he paid more attention to the system quest.
